Hello, son.

I hope that will be the last of that kind of comment I will make.

looking forward to the comments tonight..

Welcome, everyone! This album is one of the first jazz albums I ever bought, and it's still a favorite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10am
pacific standard simon:

The last week, I've been reading a wonderful book about 20th century music titled The Rest Is Noise. I'm sure it's old news to many, but I found it at a library sale for a dollar.
  3:11am
markr:

We're still about $300,000 short of our goal, so if you haven't pledged yet, now would be a good time to do so. How about a $1 a day Mouse-of-Today Pledge? You get so much swag, you won't know what to do with it. I'm not talking to you Simon--thank you for your continuing generous support of our little experiment in social disruption. No, I'm talking to the rest of you--come on now, we've got a leak in the roof (among a million other issues/situations). If you're in dire financial straits, fine, just keep listening, but if you're lucky enough to have a a JOB, think about supporting the station that supports you throughout the year.

Well good morning! Not a "jazz" guy, but listen to other WFMU programs and am a SFL guy. Just made a one-time donation. Have a good day, folks!
  3:13am
markr:

Thanks, Steve. Hope you can stick around. I'm about to play some decidedly un-jazz.

My first jazz albums were Stan Getz At The Shrine, an Ahmad Jahmal live album, and a Charlie Byrd live album. All inherited from my father.
Avatar 3:15am

funny how that circle turns around..

Steve B._Parsippany_NJ:

Hi Mark. Been in London for a week. (Went to see Chelsea FC play last Saturday! We won!) Time to catch up on emails, etc. so I will listen for a bit. Any Moira O'Connell in the library? <nothing like a wild request!) LOL Be well!
Avatar 3:18am
Steve B._Parsippany_NJ:

My closest "first jazz" album was a John Mayall album (vinyl).
  3:19am
markr:

I inherited that Shrine album, too. It was a box with like 10 45s you had to play individually. It was a great album but a total pain in the ass to play. Is the Ahmad Jamal album the one with "Poinciana" on it, "Live at the Pershing"? That's a good one.
Avatar 3:19am
Hams:

my first jazz albums were pretty traditional: ..SILENT WAY, LOVE SUPREME.. KIND OF BLUE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21am
pacific standard simon:

@Steve B._Parsippany_NJ - That presents so many possibilities!
  3:21am
markr:

See, Steve? This ain't jazz.
Avatar 3:22am

and then there was ASK THE AGES, so i went from there.
Avatar 3:26am
Scraps h’m h’m:

It was Mingus for me. I started on the top.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26am
pacific standard simon:

Yes, the Pershing one! I could listen to "Poinciana" every day. MY copy of Getz At The Shrine was a double LP, but I eventually bought it as a CD.
Avatar 3:30am
Scraps h’m h’m:

I remember hearing “Rock Lobster” on commercial station, in high school! Kinda weird, man
  3:34am
markr:

I just noticed there's sort of an ELO quality to this song isn't there? The vocals, the strings...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35am
pacific standard simon:

I had a strange kind of father, who wanted to fuck everything in sight, and collected souvenirs, like records by artists he'd seen while picking up girls. Ew.
Avatar 3:37am
Steve B._Parsippany_NJ:

Yes, Mark, it's not and it's not the bang and clang that some of the other DJs play (really time to turn off the radio here with that!) Walk Away Renee is a great song (one of my fave High School songs). I actually went to High School with Billy Joel (the piano man)...He was two grades above me, but I didn't know him. His band "The Hassles" played at my gf's Junior Prom!!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43am
pacific standard simon:

What the hell is Tom Constanten doing these days? I got to know!
  3:43am
markr:

It was kind of funny, Simon--when my mom passed away, my brother split up my parents' record collection, and we took the ones we wanted and went to sell the ones we didn't, and the guy at the record store said he really had no use for the ones by "dead white guys" (a la Kenton), he said nobody ever bought 'em. But Miles, Art Blakey, those would sell--of course, those are the ones my brother and I wanted to keep! He got first pick because he was the oldest, and he picked "Miles Davis at the Blackhawk." I got the first Jazz Messengers record, back when Horace Silver was probably the leader. I still have a big box of Mom & Dad's records (the Bill & Dot collection), and every couple months I'll pull one out and play it a few times. This month's selection is "Sarah Vaughan Sings the George Gershwin Songbook." Haven't listened to it yet, but I'm sure it's great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54am
pacific standard simon:

I know what you mean, Mark, because I've been there, but I would keep both the Miles and the Sarah Vaughan. I adore everything in the Gershwin songbook.
  3:56am
markr:

Well, my brother beat me to the Miles, but I bought my own copy of that album on CD anyway. I have Ella singing the Gershwin songbook too! BTW there's a lot of info on Tom Constanten on his wikipedia page if you're interested.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58am
pacific standard simon:

Miles doing "If I Were A Bell" is as much heaven to me as the Dead doing their best song ever.
  3:59am

I concur. There are about a million live versions of it, too--all different, all great.

I put two different versions of "Walk Away Renee" on a mix CD dedicated to my wife and the girlfriend I didn't want to break up with my wife for. My wife broke up with me. Joke's on me.

Tom, thanks for all your help during the Marathon, my friend!

I'm not sure if it's Renee, but Steven Tyler (of, yes, Aerosmith) did some backup session work with the Left Banke early on. Might have been Renee

Do FMU DJs and volunteers like pancakes? I should think about flying across the country and cooking during the marathon one of these years.
  4:23am
markr:

WE LOVE PANCAKES!!! We had a wonderful guy named George making omelets for us this year. He came in early for Clay's show as I was going off the air. I wish George was here every morning! We'd love to have you, Simon. It would be so cool to actually meet you in person! You should hit up Scott Williams (volunteer coordinator) next year if you're serious. That would be fantastic!
  4:32am
markr:

Hey, how about a pledge from a new listener? Pledge $10 a month and you'll get a glow-in-the-dark refrigerator magnet with Moondog, our station mascot (a goat) on it, a Sputnik 60 t-shirt, and 1 DJ premium. And the swag just gets bigger and crazier from there, the more you pledge. If you like what you're hearing, and you want to keep hearing it, help us out if you can, OK? Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35am
pacific standard simon:

I am serious, but I don't yet know what year. I'm in "looking at semi-retirement" mode. I love the station, and I can still kick ass in the kitchen. Could be next year, could be 5 years from now, but I'll do it. Bucket list.
  4:39am
tom from Glasgow:

The Zombies are a weird one for me because they sound like they should make, like, brainless two-chord garage rock but it’s actually this elaborate baroque pop thing. didn’t make the connexion for ages
  4:40am
markr:

Very cool, Simon! Any time is a good time for pancakes. Yeah, Tom, I know what you mean--it's much more complex than it seems, because it sounds so smooth and easy. But try playing that shit, it ain't easy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41am

Good morniing Mark!
  4:42am

Morning, Guido. You got here just in time for our lighthearted relaxing portion of the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43am

Anybody who has a liking and a curiosity about the Zombies should immediately go get the complete singles cd. You will find so much more than you ever knew was possible.
  4:45am

Sorry, got the volume adjusted now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48am
Brian in UK:

Simon there was a message for you at the very end of the marathon comments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49am

Visited my local book and record store this weekend and found a scratchy old Benny Goodman Sextet 10 inch for $1. Score!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50am
Guido from Cologne:

Used to play "Satin Doll" on organ in my teens.
  4:52am
markr:

In case you were wondering: Mr. McLean plays alto saxophone; Walter Davis, Jr. (a gentleman I'm not really familiar with on any other recordings, but he's wonderful on this one)--piano; Herbie Lewis, bass; Billy Higgins, drums.
  4:59am
markr:

We're still over $300,000 short of our Marathon goal, friends. Anything you can do to help would be most appreciated. wfmu.org/pledge. First time pledgers, let's hear from ya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59am

@ Brian in UK - Don't know why anyone should wonder, but, no, I haven't read Inherent Vice. Did read the first three Pynchon books, though, Thought they were great.

I'd like to encourage anybody who has wandered into this maelstrom of WFMU waka-yaka by accident to think about what they are hearing, and think about how they might want to make sure they hear something like it again. Contributing to the station for as little as $10 a month will help make that happen, and make you a SAINT in my eyes.
  5:12am
markr:

YOU'RE the saint, baby. But you're right. I don't have a co-host tonight to help harangue our listeners into pledging. You'll do nicely.

Satis-factory records:

Good morning folks, enjoying this track a lot!
  5:18am
markr:

Take a look at the playlist and tell me another station (including Spotify etc.) that can deliver you a breadth of sounds like this. An algorithm can only tell you what you already like. Only a fellow weirdo can tell you what you don't know you like yet. Come on--station manager Ken literally has a hole in the wall of his office that he stuffs a tennis ball in to keep mice and squirrels from overrunning his office. I'm not making this up. If you can spare a few dollars ($10 or $20 a month, maybe?) we can REALLY use it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18am
pacific standard simon:

So sweet, the music. Another thing I found at the record shop this weekend was an LP of Louis Moreau Gottschalk "Creole Ballads, Cuban Dances, Negro Songs, and Caprices".
  5:18am

We're playing this entire Violin Concerto this morning. You know why? Because we CAN.
  5:19am
markr:

Wait, there's more...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28am
pacific standard simon:

I would bet real money that this music, MUSIC so sweet and dawn-breaking, is waking up CLAY-freaking-PIGEON right now, and getting him ready to host the next show after hosting the first half of the Marathon Finale, a mere few hours ago.

Stephen's actually a neighbor of mine in Montclair, NJ. He and his wife are very active in the Montclair Film Festival, where the documentary about FMU, "Sex and Broadcasting," debuted a few years back. Yes, we could use your support, Stephen, if you're out there...
