Good Tuesday, Tony and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:02pm Listener Bob in PGH:

Hi Tony! I'm looking forward to another edition of "Tape Hiss". Me and Kay-sets go waaaaaaaaaay back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, all! Since it seems almost impossible that anyone would recognize today's LP-under-the-cassettes, I'l just reveal its identity right of the bat: it's the back of this Michael Garrison album: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Listeners James & Bob!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:04pm JtotheK:

hi everyone!
Avatar    Tue. 2/27/18 12:05pm Yvang:

Hi(ss) tape listeners and tape Tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:06pm Rich in Washington:

Hello Tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:06pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, hey, hey, JtotheK, Yvang and Rich!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:07pm northguineahills:

volume mas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

@ NGH: I've got it cranked it up super high. Forgot to warn you that much of this BCO tape is very lo-fi -- has no high end ...
Avatar    Tue. 2/27/18 12:10pm Yvang:

Given his physical appearance and the sleeves of his LPs, this Michael Garrison has more than something of an american Jean Michel Jarre.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

To NGH's point: Everyone raise your volume settings as high as possible during this BCO tape. I've already got it way into the red.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:13pm Tony Coulter:

@ Yvang: You're right on the money! Garrison *is* an American Jean Michel Jarre ... with a bit of Berlin School electronics thrown in too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

By the way, he was from Portland and there will be a track from him on my marathon premium this year. I'm doing a comp of Portland stuff from the '80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:19pm Tony Coulter:

Yep, the tracklist does say "Pedistrain," not "Pedestrian." I type what I see....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/27/18 12:20pm holland oats:

yo tc
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

Yo ho ho, h.o.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

OH: The BCO tape on now is the one with the black & white cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:22pm Sem:

Good day, Tony, Coultergeists, serendipitous ears, the congenital tape-hissphiliacs, and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:25pm Carmichael:

Heya Tony. Heading up your way this weekend. Is it still snowing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:28pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Carmichael!

Nope, the snow has skedaddled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:30pm Tony Coulter:

Apologies for the super-lo-fi-ness of much of this tape. Everyone should just hold their computers up to their ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:34pm Carmichael:

Bueno. Mrs. Carmichael and I are seeing John McCutcheon that weekend.
Avatar Tue. 2/27/18 12:37pm still b/p:

It's a little like hearing it underwater, and a little like hearing it from outside the closed car wherein it's playing. Not complaining. Just finding the articulation of assessment....like with wine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:38pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, still b/p!

Yeah, it's weird, because I have it cranked up SUPER high.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:40pm Tony Coulter:

I guess the treble end of things just went missing.
  Tue. 2/27/18 12:41pm Dean:

Do you happen to have the new Unsustainable Social Condition cassette? The 2016 CD, Dispersant, unlike this BCO cassette, is among the loudest recordings I've heard. I'm enjoying this lo-fi, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:41pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Dean!

Nope, don't know Unsustainable Social Condition
  Tue. 2/27/18 12:42pm Dean:

NON, but louder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:43pm northguineahills:

Been here, but super busy at work.
     Tue. 2/27/18 12:51pm Psychspaniolos:

Digging Architects Office!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 12:59pm Tony Coulter:

Interestingly, they scored a lot of Stan Brakhage's films.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:01pm northguineahills:

@Tony: ???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and why am I just hearing of them now!!!!!!!!!????????
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:01pm Sem:

Brakhage! Good to know, Tony, thanks for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

Talking about cats liking or disliking music (as Holland Oats just was), your cats will definitely *not* like the first track on side B of this tape. It features sustained angry cat yowling. Make sure your cats are well out of earshot before that track starts -- it freaked my neighbor's cat out completely (she just happened to pop in for a visit as I was playing that particular track).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:06pm northguineahills:

at work, so, no worries (although there are a lot of ferals around my office).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/27/18 1:08pm holland oats:

we have been warned
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:11pm listener james from westwood:

Never let it be said that our host doesn't look out for the well-being of our feline friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

I'm worried about my cat breaking down the door to my "studio" once that track starts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:18pm northguineahills:

Don't have a cat, but my neighbors' cats greet me in my driveway when I pull up in my driveway, bike or car. (next door neighbor's cat left me the back half of a mole on my welcome mat, the day before they moved out).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:19pm Tony Coulter:

Yumm, mole.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/27/18 1:20pm holland oats:

sparkle remains unfazed
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:20pm Tony Coulter:

Really? S/he has nerves of steel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/27/18 1:21pm holland oats:

jaded new yorker
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:22pm northguineahills:

Meow mix was the name of a lesbian club on Houston Street and Clinton when I first moved to NYC. I went to go see JD Sampson (Le Tigre) dj there once, and at first they didn't want to let me in, but my lesbian friends vouched for me and I was emphatic, that I was just there for the music, so, I got in.
     Tue. 2/27/18 1:22pm Psychspaniolos:

Few days ago we had an angry singer, today angry cat. Tony are you angry? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:23pm Tony Coulter:

Ha! Maybe the singer and cat are angry at each other.
  Tue. 2/27/18 1:23pm Dean:

@ngh: You're not Jonathan Richman, by chance?
Avatar Tue. 2/27/18 1:23pm still b/p:

Odyssey, 1977: "Jaded New Yorker"
  Tue. 2/27/18 1:27pm Dean:

This Naram Sin resembles a one-off band (well, myself and another guy) c.1980, Shit Church. Crunchy guitar, lyrics about Doris Lessing and Ernest Hemingway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:28pm Stanley:

Reminded me of Sourpuss
Hi Tony et al
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:32pm Tony Coulter:

Many of the acts on this tape have one or more full-length releases, on cassette and/or vinyl. Doll Parts (on now) released a very fine LP, plus one possibly even finer cassette.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:36pm Tony Coulter:

Oh, and: I'm really hoping to find any of Iceplants' releases. Hear that, Iceplants?
     Tue. 2/27/18 1:40pm Psychspaniolos:

rateyourmusic.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:41pm Tony Coulter:

Yep -- I'm looking for that one. I've got a rip of it, but I need the physical thingee in my sweaty hands.
  Tue. 2/27/18 1:43pm Dean:

There's an LA Iceplants. Not the same, I assume.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:44pm northguineahills:

@Dean: I wish!, then I would have musical talent! (as opposed to whatever is I do now w/ sound).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:44pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Really? Didn't think the world was big enough for two Iceplants. I assume they're not the same, though.
  Tue. 2/27/18 1:45pm Dean:

On second thought, Iceplants might be the name of the release by DJ Nobody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:50pm Jeff Golick:

Helloooo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:51pm Tony Coulter:

Ooo -- hell ... hello, Jeff G!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:55pm Jeff Golick:

@ngh: I remember Meow Mix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:55pm listener james from westwood:

This would be the title track, I gather.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:55pm Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff G & NGH: I kinda think I do too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

@ Listener J: You are correct, sir. And here comes the flush
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:56pm Rich in Washington:

the acoustic qualities of this recording matches the environment I am in. I practically walked out of my office to see if someone was actually hurling in the hallway. Well done, Jim E. Barfart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 1:57pm Tony Coulter:

A vomiter without peer.

Heya, Rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:00pm northguineahills:

I was hoping barfing at the moon would be an Ozzie Osbourne parody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

I can only imagine what it was like to be a kid with the last name "Barfart."
  Tue. 2/27/18 2:12pm Dean:

Reminds me of the 16th century Hungarian composer Bálint Bakfark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:15pm Tony Coulter:

Has anyone here ever been to Boulder? I haven't.
  Tue. 2/27/18 2:16pm Dean:

Nope, only Denver.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:17pm Tony Coulter:

Boulder seemed to have had a pretty thriving experimental music scene in the '80s, for whatever reason -- and despite being a small city.
  Tue. 2/27/18 2:18pm Dean:

College town. Makes a big difference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:18pm JtotheK:

been to Aurora and Denver. would like to visit CO again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:19pm Listener Bob in PGH:

Rocky Mountain high. Or maybe it's the water?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:21pm Sem:

Liking this one even more than the preceding one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:23pm Tony Coulter:

Track or tape? Either way, liking is good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:26pm northguineahills:

Hey, I pet my vegetables!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:27pm Sem:

This sequence of things from Mr. Barfart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:30pm Tony Coulter:

     Tue. 2/27/18 2:39pm Psychspaniolos:

Thanks Tony, bye all
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:40pm Tony Coulter:

Big thanks to Rich in Washington for helping me figure out which Over the Edge episode this is. The cassette I have it on has no info at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:40pm Tony Coulter:

Here's a link to an archive of the show: archive.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:40pm JtotheK:

enjoyed the show - thanks tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:42pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, everyone!

Stay tuned for the rest of this Over the Edge stuff -- there's time for another 20 minutes of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:42pm Tony Coulter:

I guess this is Toyah?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:47pm Rich in Washington:

This is a fun episode.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:48pm Rich in Washington:

I always wondered what the purchased cassettes looked like. I never ever did send away for any of them, even though Don and I corresponded for years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:49pm Rich in Washington:

There's also an episode from the mid-80s where he came totally unprepared because the apt. they lived in had just burned down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:49pm Tony Coulter:

The one I have has nice cover art, but not a word of text -- doesn't even say "Over the Edge."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:50pm Rich in Washington:

Handwriting on the cassette, though? That's how I always pictured them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:51pm Tony Coulter:

No handwriting, no -- not even on the labels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:53pm northguineahills:

No Idea Recs was a hardcore label from Gainesville (sponsored my soccer team)

/not related to the No Idea Show
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:53pm Rich in Washington:

Don really should go down in history for the 'free car' scenario. It's available on the Archive collection - you an search for it there via 'Free Car'.

I did the same thing w/ the same Mr Roger's record.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:54pm Tony Coulter:

There are labels on this OTE tape, but they have no text on them, just graphic imagery. Perhaps I should have included the cassette in the playlist pic. Decided not to because I'm only playing part of the tape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:59pm northguineahills:

Thanks Tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/27/18 2:59pm Rich in Washington:

This was sort of the golden age of OTE. Lots of participation from other Negativland members and Don hadn't yet given up on phone in "receptacle" programming yet (due to the poor fidelity of digital and then cellular phone technology).
Avatar    Tue. 2/27/18 3:00pm Yvang:
