Hello there!
  Wed. 2/21/18 10:24pm cupcakejenny:

Quiet night
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 10:25pm Funky16Corners:

Yes. I have been forsaken, yet I will push forward! The memory of Tom Rapp must be paid tribute to.
  Wed. 2/21/18 10:31pm Dean:

Dude was a civil rights lawyer. Head and heart were in the right place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

Yes. A very cool person. His spirit shone through his music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

Such a great songwriter
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 10:33pm Funky16Corners:

Dean - did you tip me off about that book about the California characters?
  Wed. 2/21/18 10:34pm Dean:

Not sure.. I tip off folks about books a lot...but "California characters"? Which characters?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 10:35pm coelacanth∅:

hello Larry and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

Hi C!

Dean - California: Fruits Flakes and Nuts
  Wed. 2/21/18 10:37pm Dean:

Rings a bell, but I don't think I recommended it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 10:38pm Funky16Corners:

Hmmm, someone mentioned it in the chat a few weeks back, I thought it was you. Cool book. I downloaded the e-book.
  Wed. 2/21/18 10:40pm Dean:

Maybe... I haven't read it, but I might have stumbled across it. You might also dig Lionel Rolfe's books. Fun account here: https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/lionel-rolfe-and-the-rise-and-fall-of-the-l-a-coffeehouses/

Good evening, Larry. We were out watching our nieces play hockey tonight. Here for the duration!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 10:43pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 10:59pm Funky16Corners:

Bernie Taupin has cited this song as a huge influence on his own 'Rocket Man'
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:03pm coelacanth∅:

good of him to say it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:04pm Funky16Corners:

Yes indeed. The PBS song was based on a Ray Bradbury story called 'The Rocket Man'
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

heh, i almost read that book a year or 2 ago.
Avatar Wed. 2/21/18 11:11pm Jeff Ash:

This is all new to me, but echoes of Harry Chapin, Donovan and early Harry Nilsson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:11pm Funky16Corners:

Contemporary of all of them, though really preceding Chapin
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:13pm Funky16Corners:

I don't know why they weren't more successful at the time. They certainly had the sound, and the songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:22pm coelacanth∅:

his singing is a lot like that of someone i know named Nick, who plays accordion and has a beautiful singing voice, and a speech "impediment". i feel certain that, unfortunately, some people will not get past a speech impediment, regardless of whatever other qualities exist.
similarly, my own sister told me once that she'd never see Loudon Wainwright perform again, and even doesn't enjoy his music as much now, because of the "bizarre facial expressions he makes" on stage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:22pm northguineahills:

Pearls Before Swine, one of the first decent Floridian bands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:23pm northguineahills:

I'm scratching at anything to get rid of FL's (well deserved) crazy reputation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:24pm Funky16Corners:

@C - Yes, his pronounced lisp is initially, if not off-putting, gives you pause. I kind of love it now, but the first time I heard him sing it was odd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:24pm Funky16Corners:

Florida still has Tom Petty, The Allman Brothers and everyone in the TK records stable.
  Wed. 2/21/18 11:25pm Dean:

The Outlaws. Don't forget The Outlaws.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:25pm Funky16Corners:

I did not know they were Floridians. I actually saw them a few times back in the day.
  Wed. 2/21/18 11:25pm Dean:

And Frederick Delius. Self-adopted Floridian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:26pm Funky16Corners:

Wayne Cochran was an adoptive Floridian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:26pm coelacanth∅:

(some people will not get past Joanna Newsom's "peculiarities"...their loss.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:27pm Funky16Corners:

Some of my favorite singers are on the "weird" side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:27pm northguineahills:

Clay Pigeon spent a almost a decade in St Petersburg.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:32pm Funky16Corners:

Oddly enough, Florida is one of the few of the 48 contiguous states that I have never been to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:34pm northguineahills:

I just have Maine and NH, and ND away from achieving that. I've been to AK and HI.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:35pm coelacanth∅:

hell, the first time i heard Neil Young's voice ("helpless") i honestly didn't get why this person would sing! - what the hell is this?! (i was about 8 or 9)
- but it didn't bother my older brother so i knew i should listen and it only took 1-2 more listens to be completely beyond that preconceived notion of what a man should sing like. in fact i quickly became very attracted to music with "less than ideal" voices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:36pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, the divide between a "good voice" and a "great singer"
  Wed. 2/21/18 11:36pm Dean:

I've been to Miami and Tampa Bay for brief stays. Not quite the same as Tallahassee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:36pm Funky16Corners:

I still have to check off FLA, OK, Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, Alaska and Hawaii.
  Wed. 2/21/18 11:37pm Dean:

Jimmy Durante: bad voice, great singer. Conchita Supervia: great voice, great singer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:37pm northguineahills:

Tallahassee is essentially Floribama, even worse then where I grew up, Florigia (*shudder*)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:37pm Funky16Corners:

Durante was a force of nature
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:39pm northguineahills:

To be fair, a dozen states happened before age 3 when my father was in medical residency travelling the country semester to semester from one hospital to another.
  Wed. 2/21/18 11:40pm Dean:

A wonderful opera show on KPFK in LA c.1980s-90s, hosted by Fred Hyatt, The Opera Show, once aired a Durante recording amid recitals by Met superstars. It was utterly right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:42pm Funky16Corners:

@NGH - Every one of the states i've been to has been by car. My father was an inveterate car traveler. We went cross country with our camper in 1977, all the way west through the south, and back east via the north
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:44pm northguineahills:

At age 13, when my family was driving from LA to Jax, I convinced my parents to hit OK, as it would be my 47th state. I'm not sure why, but they agreed (even though it was hours out of the way) went north of I-10 and we spent a few hours in OK, and we hit so many moths and bugs, we had scape the yuck off, centimeters at a time. Fun time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:45pm Funky16Corners:

We saw all the big stuff, New Orleans, the Alamo, Grand Canyon, Disneyland, San Francisco, Yellowstone, Little Big Horn, Mt Rushmore etc. It was a blast
  Wed. 2/21/18 11:48pm rw:

Hello! Curious about the G. Yarbrough songs. Seems they were released the same year as the Phil Ochs LP. Was there a connection between GY and PO? I'm guessing we'll go into that at the back-announce. Maybe I should just wait. Thanks for the Tom Rapp tribute. i hadn't known that much about him. Nice to hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:49pm Funky16Corners:

@RW - They were Phil Ochs songs being covered by Yarbrough. I'll talk more about it on the break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:49pm coelacanth∅:

yeah, was "Emily" Glenn Yarbrough's nick name for Phil Ochs?! (and are there S&G songs on that album?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:49pm northguineahills:

Same here, Larry. For some reason, by age 8, my parents trusted me w/ out destinations, be of natural or historical importance. I planned out our vacations. He got a lot of time off in b/tn deployments in the Navy. Who the hell trust an 8 year-old to plan a road-trip vacation? I was lucky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:50pm coelacanth∅:

damn i love this song - especially this version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:50pm northguineahills:

@rw: please tell us more. I can always use more Phil Ochs trivia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

@C - He does the S&G song of the title, as well as covers of the Buffalo Springfield, Ochs, Ian and Sylvia and Dylan. Great album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:51pm northguineahills:

oh, that's right coel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:51pm Funky16Corners:

@C - This song is epic in every way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:51pm coelacanth∅:

this part!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:52pm Funky16Corners:

When Marvin Junior hits that note for like 30 seconds...mindblowing (coming up soon)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:52pm coelacanth∅:

(well, never mind there was a delay to my post!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:53pm northguineahills:

Not to be confused w/ Junior Marvin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:54pm Funky16Corners:

@NGH - My Pop is a retired history teacher. We hit all the battlefields, historic sites/monuments etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:54pm coelacanth∅:

i have the 45, very scratchy. i bought a comp with stay in my corner by the dells on it...completely different! not bad, but not this!
  Wed. 2/21/18 11:54pm rw:

ngh, I don't have any Phil Ochs trivia! I do like his songs though. Especially Crucifixion. I tried to learn it on guitar (I'm a novice guitar player) but I can never remember all the words!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:56pm Funky16Corners:

@C - They recorded it twice and hit the charts both times, first for VeeJay in 1965 and then again for Chess (this version) in 1968
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:56pm northguineahills:

I ended up getting a history degree. My parents were cool w/ me planning our trips. I wish teaching history brought in the dough, but I love environmental spatial mapping, so I ended up ok (I spend a good 18 hours a week reading history or listening to history podcasts).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:57pm Funky16Corners:

My Pop still reads all he can, esp American history. 86 and still going strong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:58pm northguineahills:

@rw: I'm horrible at lyrics, but I know Phil's! I can only play guitar solos by ear, I'm amateurish otherwise w/ chords.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:59pm coelacanth∅:

i did a report on Phil Ochs in 10th grade hs, "1960's history". i may not remember everything. i do remember saying he "became frustrated with the lack of progress of the revolution so killed himself." i think wherever i read that somebody took some liberties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/21/18 11:59pm northguineahills:

I can give many American history podcast recommendations for your father if he's down w/ that sort of thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 12:02am northguineahills:

@coel: His biography is heartbreaking, but beautiful. He's a hero of mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 12:02am northguineahills:

Thanks Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 12:03am Funky16Corners:

That Phil Ochs documentary is heartbreaking.
  Thu. 2/22/18 12:03am rw:

Thanks Mr. Grogan! My first Testify! but I'm sure I'll be back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/22/18 12:03am coelacanth∅:
