Had to endure Z100 at my workplace in the 90s. The one bright spot what when "Down By the Water" started getting heavy airplay thereupon.
Avatar 12:14pm
northguineahills:

Digging this nostalgia train...., most still holds up....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm

Does Z100 still exist?

Hi Meghan, all!

Heya Birthday Girl and Aquarians. That car is pretty cool, too!

I didn't even start to listen to music until '92 (top 40 radio doesn't count)

yeah i turned 10 in 1997

I have a picture of my 19-year old self w/ Dean Wareham.

(I still have my original Nevermind)
Avatar 12:22pm
Little Danny:

I had/have the exact same trajectory with '90s music and Le Grunge. At the time it was MBV/Ride, Stereolab and the whole Spiritualized/Spectrum thing and... not much else. Now I know better. Still a terrible time for audio production tho
Avatar 12:22pm
northguineahills:

Heck, the last rave I went to was in 2016.

Can't tell you how many times I've seen Man or Astroman?
Avatar 12:26pm

My kid was a baby, then a school-kid, during the 90s. I can tell you a whole lot about animated cartoons from that decade, but music not so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Meghan:

Oh Little Danny, MBV and Ride were huge... I didn't get into Stereolab until early 2000's
Avatar 12:27pm

we were huge MTV fans, and VH1, too...

Happy birthday, Meghan. Have you picked out which Denny's to visit for your free Grand Slam?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm

hahaha! You know, for as many times that I spent at a Denny's in high school, I never took advantage of that...

I ran into Ian Svenonius one night in a DC bar around '99, we ended up hanging out all night, and even gave me a Dubbed out Make-Up 45 (Dub Narcotic). Nice lad!
Avatar 12:43pm

You know, I like a lot of 90s music (but I can say the same about any other decade).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I forget who it was, but I remember some comedian had a line in his routine that no one goes to a Denny's on purpose.
Avatar 12:57pm

"Grandma Standing in the Corner with a Penis in Her Hand Going No, No, No, No, No"? Dang, I pick the worst times to go get my lunch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Meghan:

hahaha. We went there on purpose, but that was high school and you could smoke inside. All the punk rocker, goth and alternative kids hung out there

haven't listened to endtroducing in a while... happy bday (early) Meghan, enjoying the show! hi everyone.
Avatar 1:10pm

Endtroducing opened a whole new world for me, and got me away only listening to noise/avant garde and led me to djing.
Avatar 1:12pm
C.S.:

I too couldn't stand the 90s for music but you have too admit, the late 80s were filled with a large amount a drek too. It's like music lost its way when I was in high school.

Hey, wait. What happened to Sancerre, Meghan?

Dark Days, that was the movie that introduced me to DJ Shadow.

I saw it in the big city, too. Chicago, in my case.

Country music was pretty popular in Boston during the 90s. I think they had three stations at one time.
Avatar 1:22pm
βrian:

Huh, Velvet Underground is my Montreal road music.
Avatar 1:23pm
Little Danny:

Man, Meghan, we must be about the exact same age. Our experiences of finding and hearing music are parallel, just pre-Internet
Avatar 1:23pm
northguineahills:

That's why it takes me almost 9 years to cycle through my recs/cds/tapes... I rarely hear anything twice w/in a decade.
Avatar 1:26pm

Can't leave work b/c of Sugar, but I must eat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
doctorjazz:

Cycling through the albums, huh? That is a great idea, except don't have time to get to the new music coming in. Oh well...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Meghan:

oh, I don't remember much country music in Boston at that time. I remember WFNX being on the decline, so I just listened to a lot of mixed tapes.....
Avatar 1:31pm
northguineahills:

I listen to new albums as soon as I purchase them. Since I've been forbidden from the wife from buy records unless I'm at a live show for the last 8 years (literally ran out of space), it now accrues at a much slower pace.
Avatar 1:32pm
βrian:

Sugar has led me back to HSR and the album, Fig 14. Loved that album cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm

We ran out of space (by my wife's reckoning) years ago, but somehow I still manage to find somewhere to put stuff (not always to her liking...). The negotiations of relationships...

All of it is sounding excruciatingly good. ugh!!! thanks

I find that my record buying has amped up as of recent. I am buying much more new stuff than in the past

Hi Meghan!
Avatar 1:50pm
Parq:

Meghan : The early to mid 70s was kind of the heyday for country in Boston. Passim's and the Harvard Square Performance Center did a lot for that genre. There was a local band that did a song called "It's So Lonely In Braintree With You In Methuen, It's Almost Like Being In Lowell".
Avatar 1:54pm

Hello, Meghan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm

I lived right in between Lowell and Methuen! My mom is in Methuen aka Methtown
Avatar 1:55pm

Strange shift in print landscape: no Phoenix in Boston, but Portland still has its local edition.
Avatar 1:56pm
Little Danny:

Meghan: Kinda curious if "lo-fi" (ugh) stuff like Sebadoh and Pavement fits into yer constellation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
Meghan:

I remember the Phoenix stopping and I was shocked. It was such a staple for us
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
Meghan:

I got into Pavement a bit later, along with Sebadoh. Though it was played by my friends a lot, so it was always happening near me.
Avatar 1:57pm
northguineahills:

Well, Sunny Day, SFS, GVSB, really reminds me of friends that were coming in and out of their emo stage at the time (I eventually got those records 10 years after the fact, and dig them).
Avatar 1:59pm
Sem:

Thanks so much, Meghan. See you and all next time. Don't have too much cake. Bye!
Avatar 1:59pm
northguineahills:

I actually like lo-fi, but not when it's overly fetishized.
Avatar 2:00pm

Such a fixture...on a trip to town months after its demise, looked to pick up a copy and remembered-realized, “Damn that’s right. Never again.”
Avatar 2:00pm
northguineahills:

Many of my HS friends were really into Sebadoh, but I couldn't figure out how to like them until I was finishing my undergrad. But, I always dug Pavement.
Avatar 2:00pm
Little Danny:

Oh I do too NGH, I just remember mags like Spin talking excitedly about "lo-fi" like it was some unified thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm
Meghan:

I miss picking up papers letting me know what is going on in the town. It was such a great resource. Even before the Village Voice died this past year, it stopped being a resource for what was going on. Sad really.
Avatar 2:01pm
northguineahills:

Criminy, it's two, thanks again Meghan, and may this solar orbit be beautiful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm

We can all thank the term LO FI to our dearly departed Berger
