happy (or something) birthday Martin.

...hi Mark and others

Welcome everybody!

Hail Hail Rock n Roll
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:13am coelacanth∅:

favorite Chuck Berry songs: maybeline; his cover of Charles brown's "drifting blues".

Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:14am markr:

I think "Maybelline" was his first single, or the first single he ever wrote--something like that. Actually haven't heard his version of "Drifting Blues"--I like when he does a slow blues, he's got a nice touch.
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:16am coelacanth∅:

he did drifting blues justice, in my opinion - i might even like his version better than the original
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:17am coelacanth∅:

ffff- love this one!
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:18am markr:

Me too--he crammed a lot of lyrics/ideas/action into this one!
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:19am coelacanth∅:

yeh...also "brown eyed handsome man"
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:19am CDToaster:

(mta) Tony's favorite CB song is "Anthony Boy" from his "Berry Is On Top" album. Hope you can play it for us. It was a huge hit back in the day circa 195-something. If you're not familiar with it, it's a real winner.
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:20am markr:

Of course, Tony would love it!
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:21am coelacanth∅:

(58 that would probably be)
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:26am CDToaster:

Yes, you're correct; I was in the 1st grade and trying to make it with my first girlfriend. The family would turn it up loud when it came on the radio and we'd all danced around.
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:28am coelacanth∅:

hahaha i know you're playing Chuck Berry so figured that was a miscue but that version of jumpin' jack flash is The Best version! with the possible exception of Leon Russel's version from woodstock
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:30am coelacanth∅:

..(no not woodstock but the concert for bangla desh)
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:32am coelacanth∅:

CDT that's pretty funny - tryin' to make a girl in the first grade! a pre-pubescent boy after my own heart!
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:35am coelacanth∅:

i managed to see Chuck Berry - on his 60th birthday, if i remember correctly; and he was pretty amazing. (the paladium, nyc?...i have the ticket stub, somewhere)

It's a drag when your life peaks at 10, though, CD.
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:47am coelacanth∅:

ha CDT that's a hero story! i never got the nerve up to tell a girl i liked her until maybe 9th grade! (though i went out with 2 people before that, only because one had followed me home and the other had a mutual friend tell me she liked me)
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:49am markr:

There was a really foxy girl named Sue Becker in 8th grade. I heard she liked me, then I got cocky, then I heard, "She used to sort of like you, now she thinks you're kind of a jerk." Story of my life.
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:50am markr:

When I say "foxy," you know it was the 70s.
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:51am coelacanth∅:

ohhh...Jabb! damned if you do damned if you don't.
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 3:52am coelacanth∅:

James Cotton came to my pizzeria ("Tony's New York Pizza") between sets at the nightclub he was performing at and signed my vinyl James Cotton album. It was pretty exciting. That was back in the late '80's at The Grandstand Play, Christiansted, St. Croix. Great days to remember and cherish, forever. Thanks for bringing it all back home, markr.

I knew the segue from Hüsker Dü to Steely Dan would either be terrible or inspired!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/15/18 5:27am pacific standard simon:

I have never met a woman who liked Steely Dan. Have you? It's a part of my music collection I have to keep to myself.
  Mon. 1/15/18 5:28am exile-on-hicks-street:

Duane Train did a great Walter Becker tribute show. Worth checking out in the archive.
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 5:29am markr:

I got some serious shit from a listener the last time I played a Steely Dan track "unironically."
  Mon. 1/15/18 5:31am exile-on-hicks-street:

@pacific standard I once knew an African-American girl who LOVED Steely Dan. She was super matter-of-fact about it. Check out the Duane Train tribute - he talks about the affinity between the black comm and Steely Dan. I need things explained to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/15/18 5:36am pacific standard simon:

Thanks, exile, I'll do that.

Can't wait to hear the Michael Bruce interview.

Glen Campbell + Jimmy Webb = match made in heaven.
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 5:40am CDToaster:

@exile: you're right, Duane did do a great Becker tribute show worth checking out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/15/18 5:40am pacific standard simon:

Shoulda played the Zappa version!
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 5:45am markr:

The later Steely Dan albums were all session musicians, except for Becker and Fagen, and many of those musicians were black. There was a very funky feel to a lot of those records that you could see might appeal to the same audience that might dig, say, Funkadelic. The thing I loved about them (and I didn't get this until later), was they used their very slick production values to get airplay and slip all these VERY subversive lyrics past the censors and into our impressionable young minds. Why, every time a DJ said "Steely Dan" he was unwittingly talking about a dildo in a William Burroughs story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/15/18 5:46am pacific standard simon:

I know he didn't die LAST year, but lately I've been listening to an awful lot of Warren Zevon. There's so much stuff in there.
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 5:48am markr:

A rich, deep treasure trove of irony, cynicism, romance and idealism. Plus a picture of a pistol in a bowl of bee stew.
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 5:51am markr:

that's beef stew, not bee stew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/15/18 5:51am pacific standard simon:

Oddly, the person caused me to dig past the hits in the Dan catalogue IS a woman -- Ruth Underwood, percussionist for the Zappa band, who was quite taken with the work of Victor Feldman on those early albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/15/18 5:53am pacific standard simon:

Bee stew sounds interesting.
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 5:54am markr:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/15/18 5:54am Scraps:

I have to comment about women and Steely Dan. My late wife loved Steely Dan. Like another one in this thread, she was African-American. I don’t =think= that had anything to do with it....
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 5:55am markr:

I love Ruth Underwood. I'd love to watch an hour-long interview with her. To be a woman in that environment must have been VERY interesting.
Avatar Mon. 1/15/18 5:55am Sem:

Memory whiplash from this playlist, and in a very good way. Courageous segues, Mark, and beautiful choices.

Saw an interview w/ Ms. Underwood a while back, her talking about the parts Zappa wrote for her. She picked up the mallets and played a few measures, and there mist have been a hundred notes in there, in, of course, more than several time signatures.
