"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

what is the fascination with alvarius b on WFMU? Is there some sort of dj contest to see who can play it the most?

@crateslinger - you is correct

(although I like AB, I can find it on my own if I need to)

Agent Peter:

there's a difference between the real and the vividly imagined?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
crateslinger:

I spoke too soon. Upon re listening to Sweet Child in Time, the AB intro is not exactly derivative, but dang it's got that sound. I wonder if he did it on purpose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am
crateslinger:

Great song - Sweet Child. Especially on the live in Japan album. Best heavy metal screaming ever. Worth playing the two songs next to each other for comparison. Oh no, now I've done it...
  11:44am
rw:

JA, I've been wondering that myself, but I feel like it may be more than just my perception. You don't notice it? It's tough to say for sure because of the amorphous nature of freeform, but do we really need a blues hour? Even Matt Fiveash seems to be apologetic about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am
steveo:

I, for one, do not believe that station management is telling DJs what to play. I've heard DJs, in the past (like, 17 or 18 years ago), play the same record over and over for an hour straight. I don't think anyone told them to do that, either. If there's one song that a lot of people like to play (and really, John's the only one still playing Zion) it's probably because they all happen to like it / or hate it / or want to punish us all, or whatever, as individual DJs. Now I'm sorry for blabbing so much; I'm gonna sit still and listen.
Avatar 11:45am
βrian:

@steveo: Ah, but maybe Ken is telling them NOT to play certain songs! And so they play them!
Avatar 11:48am
John Allen:

are you people out of your minds? This is boar (bored) material stuff. I can assure you the only one telling me to play Alvarius B is Alan Bishop. And I happen to pee often.
Avatar 11:50am
Wild Neil:

I remember back in the 90's hearing Velvet Crush Teenage Symphonies for God by different DJ's all the time. It happens without management is my opinion based on no facts other than that one.
  11:51am
rw:

And I don't want to seem like I'm complaining. WFMU is one of the best things on the planet. As far as Alan Bishop and this particular show are concerned, I'm into it. Keep on doing what you do! This show kicks ass.
Avatar 11:51am
Wild Neil:

At least song repetition on WFMU is NOT LIKE my local classic rock station.

Patterns of similar behavior do not mean behavior is dictated by some create puppet-master.
Avatar 11:55am

I imagine DJ's talk to each other about what new music they like. Like 75 dollar bill, Dirty Beaches, et al...
  11:57am
JakeGould:

I meant “…great puppet-master.”

Also, the DJs are constantly talking about Bitcoin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am
listener Rey:

There was one week a couple months ago when I heard the same Rihanna song on 3 different shows. I think it was just a billboard-related coincidence. Or possibly payola
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am
steveo:

thanks JA, lots of great music today; how many eyes do you have, though?
  11:59am
rw:

Thanks JA! Excellent show as always!
Avatar 12:00pm
John Allen:

i'm not saying payola isn't possible, but it's not very profitable here. hey if someone can start paying my $15 back into the city each week I'll give your next record plenty of love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm
crateslinger:

I wasn't suggesting collusion.
