Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 12:57pm coelacanth∅:

what i'm wondering is if i saw doa in new brunswick nj c.1984, or if i imagined that. the band aod (adrenaline overdose) was practically a house band at patrix and a friend says i'm confusing them; that doa rarely toured the states. but
i remember aod and i feel sure i saw doa because i liked them a whole lot more. enough to buy a record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 12:58pm Coe:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 1:05pm coelacanth∅:

Doobois i have a tape of Paul Cavenaugh's show from around 1983 and he put on "fuck you"- supposedly meant to play the other side! after one "i don't care what you say, Fuck You!" he kind of put his finger on the turntable, then let another one go by before he took the record off.
i always wondered how fmu didn't get fined for that. (or did it?)

i remember doa and dks doing a show together near me, but i'd already seen dks and now i know for sure i'd seen doa already too (& mdc...i don't know if i saw false prophets)
...i rarely saw a band more than once if it was more than 3 bucks or so. my usual partners in crime felt the same and we skipped it.
Thu. 12/7/17 2:13pm John in Jersey:

Also saw the Misfits, Ramones and Motorhead with a month or so. Think my ears rang for the rest of that summer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:14pm northguineahills:

@coel: until 10 years ago, my threshold was $5, since then it's been $7 (I can still find good shows down here for $5) Of course, I'll see bands more then once if they're one of my handful faves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:15pm coelacanth∅:

still, and maybe 'till this day, the loudest band i've ever seen was the who at the spectrum. it was so loud i was pissed off! it hurt!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:17pm coelacanth∅:

ngh things seem to've jumped suddenly. even my local pub is almost always $5. now. only 1-2 years ago the regulars would scoff if it was 5.

saw DOA at the Mudd Club, and a couple times in Boston. always great. i have photos somewhere.
Thu. 12/7/17 2:21pm John in Jersey:

Motorhead w/ Brian Robertson was scary loud. My teeth and stomach hurt. Saw them at the Royal Manor in North Brunswick. Saw a young and somewhat unknown James Hetfield get beaten up by a bouncer at that show. He deserved it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/7/17 2:25pm Michael 98145:

GOF, yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:25pm coelacanth∅:

heh, i probably saw you at some point. i was there just about every weekend for a few years from c.1980 - c.1983.
i mixed it up with the court tavern, melody, dirt club, loop lounge occasionally and nyc venues; but usually would hit patrix at least one weekend night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:27pm Coe:

Loudest thing I ever heard was Black Label Socity open for Judas Priest. It was awful. After about 15 minutes of trying to ignore it and read I got up and walked out into the concourse of Brenden Byrne (that's right that's what I call it deal :) ) as far away as I could got a beer stuffed napkins in my ears and tried to continue to read and hope it would be over soon. Now this is from someone who has seen people perform with the sheer intention of disturbing their audience with noise and volume (and has enjoyed it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:27pm coelacanth∅:

what was your band Diane? (i feel like i know this)
maybe i saw you play. i did see Chris T's band there.

  Thu. 12/7/17 2:28pm Dean:

Am I mistaken that Go4 rerecorded Entertainment! in its entirety some years later? Some other Go4 album? Or was it Wire?
Avatar Thu. 12/7/17 2:30pm Diane Kamikaze:

By band was called Children In Adult Jails. Noisy, 3 gals, 1 guy. I drummed and sang. I'm sure we were in the same place, I went to plenty of gigs there and all the venues you mentioned. We played our first gig at the Dirt Club in Bloomfield.
Avatar    Thu. 12/7/17 2:31pm Chris from DC:

Shoot, I remember at least the name for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:31pm Coe:

Yeah I always have a book or two on my phone. They come in handy especially when I'm at a show alone and there is someone plying that I have absolutly no interest in. If I don't have something to engage myself I start to get boerd and then boerdem turns into crackiness whcih is not so much of a problem now but back in the day crankiness could turn into reall trouble :)
Avatar    Thu. 12/7/17 2:32pm BronwynB:

the loudest thing i ever heard was some shitty hardcore band called bath salts doing their *final show ever* (thank god) in a basement in philly. i left when they started randomly slamming/lurching into audience members.
  Thu. 12/7/17 2:36pm Dean:

Loudest: Angel at Santa Monica Civic. Maybe I've heard louder shows, but this one was painful.
Avatar    Thu. 12/7/17 2:36pm Rich in Washington:

@BronwynB: That's hilarious! I've been to a few shows like that, where the bands misinterpret people clearing out for them being so awesome/intense/hardcore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:37pm coelacanth∅:

ah ha. more likely i saw you at the dirt. the female drummers i saw at patrix stand out in my memory; i could count them on one hand. (catholic girls stand out)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:37pm joe:

@dean how dare you besmirch the great Punky Meadows ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/7/17 2:38pm mb:

Boris with Merzbow was the loudest band I ever encountered in a club. They were great but I had to leave after 3 songs. Soulfly was the loudest outdoor show and I did not leave for that. That was a great show for their debut album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/7/17 2:38pm Stevel:

Took my earplugs out for Motorhead's Ace of Spades encore, probably 15 years ago or more. Felt like I had a head full of water for the next 24 hours.
Avatar    Thu. 12/7/17 2:40pm Rich in Washington:

attended a crazy Noise show once, where one dude just squatted on the floor brandishing a grinder, throwing sparks, metal fragments, finally threw the grinder in some kind of fit of performance artist rapture - the whole audience finally fleeing the room - and then he's walking around later with this contented smirk, like he just KILLED with his act. In honesty, people didn't want to get killed, so left the asshole to his own devices (literary) .
Avatar    Thu. 12/7/17 2:40pm Chris from DC:

Mogwai at the 9:30 Club was so loud I left.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:41pm coelacanth∅:

i've likely seen louder shows in small clubs and basements than the who in philly; but i was young and inexperienced and did not have ear plugs with me. i always have them now.
Avatar    Thu. 12/7/17 2:41pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Loudest club-size show = probably swans at the 9:30 in DC, late 1980s (maybe 1990?).
Distant 2nd place would be Merzbow at DC Arts Center, also late 1980s.

Loudest larger event = Motörhead at the fairgrounds in Weedsport NY. Because Motörhead.
Avatar    Thu. 12/7/17 2:41pm Rich in Washington:

I too once saw Motorhead with Cromags and it was possibly the loudest rock show I've ever attended. I felt my ears going.
Avatar    Thu. 12/7/17 2:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

[clicky clicky] the swans gig would have been 1989.
  Thu. 12/7/17 2:42pm Dean:

@joe: In fact, Punky wasn't the problem. It was Gregg Giuffria's keyboards, as tizzy as all getout.

@Chris from DC: I must have caught Mogwai on a bad day at the Troubadour. Not *even* loud.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:44pm joe:

@dean that can be bad. I can't remember who it was but I remember being at a show and the keyboards just sounded like needles being slowly pushed into my ears.
Avatar Thu. 12/7/17 2:44pm Barney Grubbs:

yay hammerhead!
  Thu. 12/7/17 2:46pm Dean:

@joe: Indeed. Same for Patrick Moraz with Yes at Angel Stadium. Yow.

@Chris from DC: For sure, and at the time I was unaware of Mogwai's reputation for supernumerary volume. I've heard many louder bands: Meshuggah, High on Fire, Zeke...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/7/17 2:46pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:47pm coelacanth∅:

it's the high end that does the hearing loss. i often leave if a drummer is very cymbol-heavy. (i think it usually makes the music shitty anyway) but yeah a mid-range & high-end heavy keyboard would also drive me away. (for both those same reasons)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:47pm Coe:

Now one of the loudest but in a good way would be Godflesh
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 12/7/17 2:51pm coelacanth∅:

I also saw Voivod at the Ritz, with Venom I believe. May have been their first US show. Got to meet Piggy. Very nice guy.
