Huge thanks to these two super-fine late-inning pledgers:

KENT from Crystal Falls, MI
FREDRIK from Los Angeles

HOORAY for these two heroes of the airwaves!!

Glad for the late pledges and overjoyed that WFMU has made its goal!! Thanks, all!!

Bob bless Crystall Falls, Michigan!
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

So, the LP under today's cassettes should be a little easier than usual to ID, given that most of it is showing. Can anyone name it? Hint: It's the back cover.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Scraps deSelby and βrian!!
Avatar    Tue. 11/7/17 12:04pm V Priceless:

Hi Tony! It's VDGG "The Least We Can Do..."!
Avatar    Tue. 11/7/17 12:04pm V Priceless:

whoops...no it isn't!
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:05pm βrian:

I recently read there's a shortage of magnetic tape, much to the chagrin of cassette fans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 12:05pm listener james from westwood:

Always happy to see Hopey, Scraps!

hi tony, hi everyone.

Hiya, Tony, Coulter-ists.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:06pm βrian:

Yes, but it's still Mardi Blah.

Also, counter-Coulter-ists.

Greets, VP, Glenn, Carmichael, JtotheK & Sem!!
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

That LP jacket is neither VDGG nor B.B. King -- the record is in the same rough stylistic territory as VDGG, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 12:08pm Scraps:

Listener James, it’s so true!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 12:08pm Ike:

Mmm, delicious cassettes.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:09pm Tony Coulter:

Ike! Heya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 12:12pm David D:

Hey Tony, liking this tape!
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

The tape on now is the red one at the bottom of the playlist pic. As I said, it comes packaged in glove, like so: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:13pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, David! Glad you approve!
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:14pm Tony Coulter:

Des Traces (on now) have a cassette I've been searching for for years -- one day, maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 12:15pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Tony and hissy cats
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

Greetsssssss, coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 12:16pm Scraps:

A Certain Ratio’s Sextet?
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:17pm Tony Coulter:

The LP jacket? Nope.

Another hint: It's an early '70s U.K. proggy thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 11/7/17 12:20pm JtotheK:

this is a neat song about egypt.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:20pm βrian:

Does the glove imply that the compilation, eh, bears examination?
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:20pm glenn:

hmmmmm. is there a band called proggy thing? because that would be perfect.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: You could be on to something. It is a surgical glove.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

OK, one more hint about the mystery LP jacket -- one that almost gives it away: the band was an offshoot of The Nice.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

And remember, it's the back cover.
  Tue. 11/7/17 12:27pm Dean:

Totally cheated, but Jackson Heights, King Progress.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:28pm Tony Coulter:

Dean, the cheater, WINS!
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:28pm Tony Coulter:

Here it is: www.discogs.com...
  Tue. 11/7/17 12:29pm Dean:

Prospers, even! Great lesson for my kids.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

Lie, cheat, and steal, and someday you can become president.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:31pm Tony Coulter:

Despite the German lyrics, La Chorale (on now) is French.
  Tue. 11/7/17 12:31pm Dean:

If elected, I promise never to resort to surreptitious 'net searching to identify Tony Coulter's album cover backdrop images on his Tape Hiss programs.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:31pm glenn:

or as richard thompson says "good things happen to bad people, but only for a while".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 12:38pm Scraps:

I haven’t heard Jackson Heights, but I know the singer, Lee Jackson, and I laughed at a review of Jackson’s singing abilities: “Jackson's vocals are horrendous which is much more noticeable on soft acoustic numbers. At best he sounds like an asthmatic Roy Harper doing a Bob Dylan impersonation.”
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:41pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, I remember reading that somewhere too! He is a pretty mediocre singer.
  Tue. 11/7/17 12:47pm Dean:

I dunno. I'm sampling his singing on King Progress, and it's not so bad, not at least as rock vocalists go. There's a Jorma Kaukonen kinda thing going on, though JK taps the folk vibe much better.

Speaking of Jorma, I picked up a box set of Hot Tuna records recently and I learned upon playing the first record, a live outing, that it was recorded in a venue about three blocks from my home. That space is now an auto body repair shop.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

"Live from the Auto Body Repair Shop Three Blocks from Dean's House" -- I've got that one.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 12:59pm Tony Coulter:

Funny how of the contributors to this tape, Merzbow ended up being the breakout star. There's no real good reason for that, I'd say. Not that I don't like him....
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 1:00pm Tony Coulter:

I guess, tho, that he really kept at it, and released a zillion things. Persistence pays off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 1:04pm listener james from westwood:

Yeah, I'd have thought the Riff-O-Matics' sound would've caught on more.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 1:07pm Tony Coulter:

As far as I know, the Riff-O-Matics never recorded an album -- just some compilation tracks.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 1:15pm Tony Coulter:

At the risk of sounding like a creepy letch, may I point out that the vocalist of Candidate is quite a looker. Here they are on French TV: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 1:16pm Cecile:

I have no problem with people admiring physical beauty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 1:17pm Cecile:

there's just a right way and a wrong way to do it.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 1:18pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Cecile!
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 1:21pm Tony Coulter:

I'm just struck by the fact that the members of experimental/underground bands from the U.S. usually look like people who never leave their basement, whereas their European equivalents often look like fashion plates. The male member of Candidate is quite a looker too.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 1:24pm βrian:

Among my college ilk, to describe someone as "hale and hearty" implied they were essentially drop-dead gorgeous.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 1:25pm βrian:

Or perhaps that's "hardy."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 1:27pm Cecile:

There is still more of a fashion/dress up culture in Europe and even on the US East Coast than in the Midwest. And we dress up compared to parts of the West Coast. My friend from Seattle who used to live here still marvels at how dressed up people are here compared to Seattle.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 1:28pm βrian:

"Dress-up" would be a party theme in Wisconsin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 1:28pm Cecile:

This Candidate could be re-issued. It's a perfect snaphot of how the B-52s, Slits and Au Pairs had such a huge impact.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 1:30pm Tony Coulter:

This tape has not been reissued, but Candidate's somewhat later vinyl EP has been: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 1:31pm Cecile:

Yeah, it would, Brian.
I scandalized some people back in '81 when I said blue jeans would not be allowed at my wedding. That was my only request. My husband had to loan a friend a leisure suit. I figured that they could wear jeans anywhere, but if I wanted to get that dressed up, they should respect that and do the same
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 1:32pm Cecile:

Aw bummer, Oasis isn't on there.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 1:39pm Tony Coulter:

Plus, it's a different version of "Strange Girl," so, there's no overlap with the tape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 1:44pm Cecile:

Yeah, both sides of the tape should be reissued.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 1:48pm Tony Coulter:

The NSRD tape on now is the black & white one on the upper left of the playlist pic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 1:51pm northguineahills:

NRSD, sounds like the 80s German band Trio in a coma.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 1:52pm Webhamster Henry:

This has the uncertain clarity of an 80s Casiotone.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 1:52pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, NGH and Webhamster! Life moves more slowly in Latvia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 1:53pm Webhamster Henry:

There's no shortage of cassette tape - you can just tape over something using the masking tape trick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 1:55pm northguineahills:

I need to introduce this band to a lad I know in Latvia.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 1:57pm Tony Coulter:

Side B has Latvian lyrics
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 2:13pm Cecile:

This sounds very Finnish, which makes sense.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 2:16pm Tony Coulter:

It does!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 2:22pm Webhamster Henry:

It sounds like Tony is singing along!
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 2:23pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, just call me the Latvian nightingale.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 2:23pm Tony Coulter:

... or frog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 2:26pm ɨkɛ:

I used to hear good things about WMUH but I've only heard it in passing on I-78.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 2:28pm Tony Coulter:

I've never heard it, I don't think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 2:30pm ɛɨk:

I'd love to get a new cat and name her Frog. Even if she's not a green cat. I'm all about naming cats after other animals. I like that DJ Hatch has a cat named Goose. Goose is a major Instagram star in my world.
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 2:31pm Tony Coulter:

My cat's named after a toy: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 11/7/17 2:32pm Stanley:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 11/7/17 2:33pm Stanley:

Hi Tony!
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 2:33pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Stanley!
  Tue. 11/7/17 2:33pm Dean:

Our cat is named Wednesday after the Addam's family character. We didn't pick the name, but it's apt. Still, I call the cat "kitten" > "kitchen" > "chicken" and variations thereof: "kitchen window," "chicken liver." She responds to all names.
  Tue. 11/7/17 2:35pm Dean:

Joseph Schmidt was an amazing tenor who died far too young trying to escape to Switzerland from France in '42.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/7/17 2:35pm northguineahills:

I remember 198? like it was.... wait, what?
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 2:36pm Tony Coulter:

Tape on now comes with this note (as can be seen in the playlist pic): "We will air your tape on WMUH and send copies to various radio stations, tape exchanges, and individuals in the U.S. and abroad."
Avatar Tue. 11/7/17 2:37pm Tony Coulter:

How I miss those tape exchanges. Wonder what the exchange rate is these days?
  Tue. 11/7/17 2:44pm Dean:

I wonder to which broad not in the U.S. they sent it.
