I just started watching over again the James Burke show Connections. Episode 8 talks about what happens when your privacy is gone with all the credit cards - he figured it out almost 40 years ago.

Those Powerwall batteries run about $7k each, installed. Their latest model, anyway. I wonder if these are the previous models that they weren't able to sell.

first trend forecaster i recall is faith popcorn. but i don't know if that title existed before the 80s.

Alvin Toffler before her with Future Shock.
Avatar Mon. 10/2/17 6:24pm herb.nyc:

is non-car ownership a trend? due to rise of uber & lyft & others. now we have cat parlors, for the cat-challenged. maybe children parlors?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/2/17 6:26pm JakeGould:

Another trend: Suburban disconnection maladies happening since urban environments are so kept and taken care of nowadays… You never have to leave home… You can mail order everything. So why live in a city? And what casual interactions does one have nowadays that everything gets delivered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/2/17 6:27pm JakeGould:

Like my tech work? I can do it utterly anywhere. Why again am I still in NYC for now? Job requirements that I be in meetings. Past that? No real reason. And I know I am not the only one in a situation like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 10/2/17 6:29pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Downward trend: selling Avon products door to door. Just buy the stuff online, or not.

For me, fatigue set in with the advent of the Web.

It's not a lemming situation. It's the very compelling draw of the network effect.

Is facial recognition going to become a standard feature? That would be creepy.
Avatar Mon. 10/2/17 6:34pm geezerette:

The tech we all use is making a lot of people cripplingly self-conscious and isolated. Intuition and imagination are absolutely vulnerable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/2/17 6:35pm JakeGould:

@melinda: I don’t like the lack of choice in the realm of biometrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 10/2/17 6:35pm melinda:

@Jake it's pretty fucked up.
  Mon. 10/2/17 6:37pm Dean:

A hammer is a tool. I can own a hammer, use it when I need it, lend it to a friend or neighbor. A phone is not merely a tool. It only works well if many other people agree to use one, too.

nice passage that was just read. right, why should we think. it made me think of KODAK photo signs. here: en.wikipedia.org...

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 10/2/17 6:41pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I would bet highly that the FBI and/or CIA has research underway to correlate the look of a face with the likelihood that that person is a criminal. Here's the image of a face, what's the chances that this person is a criminal?
Avatar Mon. 10/2/17 6:43pm herb.nyc:

@jakegould, now go outside and play, with that idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/2/17 6:45pm Webhamster Henry:

@Ken/Hyde Park read "The Mismeasure of Man", by Stephen J. Gould, a large section is on 19th and 20th century theories about criminal faces (and racial ranking... intelligence testing, sterilization and so much more)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/2/17 6:46pm JakeGould:

My great grandpa wrote “The Mismeasure of Man”… Based it off of his opinion of my grandma’s face!
Mon. 10/2/17 6:47pm Tom from Maplewood:

We were at a concert on Sunday night. A person near us wasn’t actually there - they watched the concert on their device’s screen as they made a video of the show. Poor guy.
Avatar Mon. 10/2/17 6:49pm herb.nyc:

Todd Barry has a joke, of a person in front row of his comedy show. he looks at person's screen, and he's being googled. person hits some youtubes and then gives todd a thumbs up, mouths "you're funny". something like that; sorry for ruining todd's joke.
Avatar Mon. 10/2/17 6:51pm herb.nyc:

(aside - the editor of STAY FREE! magazine, carrie mclaren, recommended this novel "the savage girl", back in 2002. i read it but i don't think i fully understood it. fyi. description: What is the next trend -- the next "killer app"? This question is very much on the mind of Ursula Van Urden, a burned-out art student who, after her supermodel sister Ivy's widely publicized suicide attempt, has found work as a trendspotter for Tomorrow, Ltd., in the volcano-shadowed metropolis of Middle City....)
