Hey there, Annie and Listener J!
  Tue. 9/26/17 12:04pm Dean:

I remember driving by Gold Star once or twice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 9/26/17 12:04pm JtotheK:

hi tony, hi everyone!
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 12:05pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Dean & JtotheK!

I wonder, did Gold Star actually burn down?
  Tue. 9/26/17 12:08pm Dean:

"Gold Star is being torn down -- possibly this week -- to make way for an office building, a shopping center, or 'something else cultural,' reported Stan Ross, the studio's saddened co-owner" -- Steve Pond, The Day the Music Died at Gold Star Studios, Los Angeles Times, March 5, 1984, p.H1.
  Tue. 9/26/17 12:10pm Dean:

Maurice Gibb worked in the final session at the studio, according to the article. And Herb Alpert owns one of the original consoles.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

Hmm -- so I guess it didn't actually burn down -- but just closed.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 12:17pm Tony Coulter:

By the way, that Candidate track that was just on is from a cassette I'll be airing in its entirety on a future Tape Hiss ... at some point, anyway.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 12:20pm Yvang:

Hi Tony and hi listeners! Any update on the artists behind the mysterious cassettes of last episode?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 9/26/17 12:22pm steveo:

mr tony coulter: i am listening & enjoying; thanks
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

Hi, Yvang! I did get some responses re last week's mystery cassettes, but so far I'm not too convinced. Do have some leads to follow up on, though -- will let you all know when/if any postive IDs are made.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

Hi there, Steveo! Glad you're enjoying the show!

Hiya, Sem -- I'm impressed you can work to what I'm playing at the moment ... unless you're breaking up rocks with a pickaxe, or course...

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/26/17 1:00pm Cecile:

sniff. Berger.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 1:01pm Tony Coulter:

Yep -- so sad.
  Tue. 9/26/17 1:04pm Mark Williams:

Hi Tony. Not to put you on the spot, but from your years at the mothership, any particular memories of William Berger that stand out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/26/17 1:08pm Cecile:

What country was this Strange Girl from? It sounds kind of out of time - like it could have been recorded a lot later or earlier.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 1:10pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mark. Would have to think about that. The period during which William and I spent some time hanging out was way back in the 90s -- which seems like a lifetime ago. Kind of lost track of him after that -- totally my fault I'm sure:
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 1:10pm Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Candidate are from France....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/26/17 1:11pm Cecile:

OKay, sounds good.

Wow, this Azalia Snail sounds kind of generic.
  Tue. 9/26/17 1:13pm Mark Williams:

@Tony (and anyone). I rarely managed to listen to his shows of late since invariably I went to sleep. One curiosity for me was when it was he transitioned into playing the metal side of things to the degree he did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/26/17 1:15pm Cecile:

I never knew him from the old days. I wasn't listening to much rock in the 90s. I knew Uncle Wiggly but never heard them. He came on Diane's show for fundraising years ago, and I was "WOW! Who is this! I have to listen to his show!" I usually listened on archives. The first time I posted a comment, Berger emailed me and asked me if he could follow me on social media. He was one of my very favorite Instagram commenters.
  Tue. 9/26/17 1:22pm Mark Williams:

doing a great job of making this rhyme, is the lead biomutant here.
  Tue. 9/26/17 1:27pm Mark Williams:

it's hard to be as recognizable as is Tietchens in making this kind of music. But invariably I can tell it's him. This is a fantastic piece.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 1:28pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, Tietchens is fantastic. Still very underappreciated, I think.
  Tue. 9/26/17 1:29pm Mark Williams:

i agree. Years ago a friend of mine knocked on his door when he lived in Hamburg and was promptly invited in. I've heard other similar stories about him too. Would love to meet him.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

He should rightly be as "famous" as, say, Cluster or Conrad Schnitzler.
  Tue. 9/26/17 1:33pm Mark Williams:

i think his sound was always just a bit more "cold" if that's the right word. Less likely to attract your more adventurous Kraftwerk fan than Cluster or Schnitzler.
  Tue. 9/26/17 1:33pm Mark Williams:

Was this Human Flesh on something else, do you know Tony? What has Cherry Red done here - just compile from previous releases?
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 1:34pm Tony Coulter:

It was from the cassette "The Third Human Attempt" -- which I should definitely play on Tape Hiss one of these days.
  Tue. 9/26/17 1:35pm Dean:

Never before realized that he was in Liliental.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 1:35pm Tony Coulter:

And the Tietchens was originally on the cassette "Musik aus der Grauzone" -- which I also have, and should also air on Tape Hiss.
  Tue. 9/26/17 1:37pm Mark Williams:

i think VOD included Musik aus der Grauzone on a 5CD set.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: Yep, Cherry Red is just compiling from previous releases.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 1:39pm Tony Coulter:

There are definitely some obscurities on there, though....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/26/17 1:46pm Cecile:

This is a nice little Nuevo Wavo gem
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/26/17 1:47pm Cecile:

Nice Shakin Street cop
  Tue. 9/26/17 1:50pm Dean:

Cover of that Newstreet album is a photograph snapped outside the (former) Bonaventure Hotel in downtown L.A.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 1:50pm Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Just had a vision of a street cop with the shakes.
  Tue. 9/26/17 1:50pm Dean:

Hmm, guess it isn't former. Thought it had been sold and renovated. Maybe so, but it's still a hotel.
Avatar    Tue. 9/26/17 1:51pm Sem Chumbo:

Gee, Tony, this has been great. Thanks so much.

ha, tony!
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 1:53pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Sem!
  Tue. 9/26/17 2:09pm Mark Williams:

So how many songs in the 70s feature a line that says "...she's the kind of girl..."? I have two hands and ten fingers. Will I need more to count?
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 2:10pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, with this song the transition from '80s underground sounds to '70s backwoods rocker dudes is complete.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/26/17 2:14pm listener james from westwood:

Those are some good basement rescues, esp. Truth and Tukanon.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 2:19pm Tony Coulter:

Glad you liked those tracks, James! The Truth album has quite an eye-catching cover too: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/26/17 2:24pm northguineahills:

This is a sector of music I'm unfamiliar w/.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 2:25pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, NGH! Time to get down wid it.....
  Tue. 9/26/17 2:26pm Dean:

One gets the impression that the eponymous deadline has something to do with the high cost of studio time.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 2:27pm Tony Coulter:

Ha! sadly, I don't think they ever met their real goal: becoming the kings of rock & roll, I mean.
  Tue. 9/26/17 2:31pm Dean:

Neither did Michael Stanley Band, who I suspect influenced Vic and his boys.
Avatar    Tue. 9/26/17 2:34pm holland oats:

i bet pinnacle had a cool logo
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 2:37pm Tony Coulter:

At the very least, I imagine their name must have usually appeared in a Gothic font....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/26/17 2:44pm Ike:

HIPPIES!!!!

Ahem. Now that my Tourette's has had its say, how is everybody?
  Tue. 9/26/17 2:44pm Dean:

Heh, this Medusa CD is going for $5 at Numero Group right now.
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 2:45pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Ike! Tough hippies in leather jackets....
Avatar Tue. 9/26/17 2:46pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: The Medusa CD has really elaborate packaging too -- the cover is a sort of faux velvet.
