Michigan peaches are a thing?

At the farmer’s market in Union Square yesterday it was just pea shoots this and pea shoots that.

I'm sorry, Brian but there is no peach that approaches a Palisades peach.
Avatar 12:29pm

UM: They're probably shipping them from Michigan and re-labelling them. But if it tastes good, that's all that matters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
Meghan:

I live on a Palisade, but I don't see any peaches up there....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm

You don't live in Palisades, Colorado, though.

@Meghan: yeah. The Sonics showing up in a Range Rover ad was a low point for me.

I have vague memories (c. late 1980s) of hearing Mission of Burma behind a Levi's ad, but think that one is just a dream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm

It was a moment for me that I realized advertising was trying to directly address me and my generation.... (or those that happened to listen to that music...)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
Jeff Golick:

Nat Hentoff on that Mingus song, via the liner notes: "[T]he record [...] begins with a piece whose title is much less opaque than it first appears to be. If you read the roman numeral with which it begins as "to" and then add the common meaning of B.S., you arrive at Mingus's occasional exasperation at having to find titles for compositions after they've been created. 'Often,' he explains, 'when I'm sitting at the piano, developing a piece, it's difficult to put a label on the particular feeling I have going. All I can really put into words about this one is that it's meant to communicate a mood of elation. And it's strongly related to the Haitian Fight Song.'"

The Oscar:

I've mostly come to terms with songs I like being used in ads (mostly because, for songs I REALLY like, it's still pretty rare), but maybe six months ago there was a car ad that used "Search and Destroy," only they cut out the solo in the second bar and just looped the intro again, and it drove me fucking CRAZY. My girlfriend said it was like watching a dog react to a frequency you can't hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
Jeff Golick:

Yup, @The Oscar. I did come to enjoy hearing "Lust for Life" in those cruise commercials, though.

Avatar 1:27pm
Parq:

The way I look at it, when a recording by an artist I dig gets used on a commercial, that means money for the artist I dig (and, if it's a different person, for the songwriter), and that's a good thing. Of course, the record companies often assert that the individual artists get only a teeny percentage, and that's a bad thing, but it's not caused by the use of the recording in a commercial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
Jeff Golick:

Yesterday's comedy as today's news. That's great, @The Oscar.

"Notably absent from the ad is any footage of a shirtless, bleeding Iggy Pop in skintight leopard-print pants," hahahah
Avatar 1:30pm
Parq:

"That's why 'Rocks Off' is perfect for Procter & Gamble's new line of children's shampoos." The Oscar is right -- that says it all.

JakeGould:

I’m kinda tired of hearing the hemming and hawing about artists “selling out” or not. At the end of the day—especially in music—many artistic careers are painfully short. Like 2-3 years of solid, great work followed by years of rehashing it until it’s past caricature.

If you are an artist and can get a pile of $$$ for your work, more power to you.

Also, there is such romantic nonsense about starving artists. If they are “starving” they are pure. If they finally get paid, they are “sell outs.” Even in the visual art world. People seem to love stories about keeping precious artists as their own personal, suffering servants. Bleagh! Just let them get paid. Enjoy the art, not the politics.

Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Meghan. Please give Diane K. a hug or two on your way out. She's kind of down today, understandably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
Meghan:

I don't mind if an artist sells their work for advertising, but I do wonder if they were part of the conversation or did the label do it on their behalf. I do hate that a lot of those 70's pop soul songs make me think of Burger King.

But yes, all artists should make a living. If they are getting a wider reach and you (the general you) feel they have become uncool because your hidden group or artist has reached a wider audience, which may make you uncool, then come on..... It's really about people's attachment to artists and not about selling out. As the Dead Milkmen so famously say in Instant Klub Hit- I met Andy Warhol at a really chic party..... blow it out your hair dude cause you work at Hardees
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
