Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/11/17 6:14pm Mark Hurst:

Steve, totally agree. I'm wearing a $40 Casio watch right now. 10-year battery life and never gets hacked!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:39pm dale:

i NEVER thought about the robotoid dirt suckers storing that type of data. do they have little cameras too? the robot lawn mower could also up rise against us.

Doesn't the Shut Up, Weido program own the copyright to Creep of the Week?
  Mon. 9/11/17 6:41pm Paul:

They are conditioning us not to think that these things are creepy. It's insane that we buy technology that spies on us, and are happy to do so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/11/17 6:41pm listener james from westwood:

Jerry Gergich was right to crush DJ Roomba in that Parks & Rec episode.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:42pm -Ken:

Anybody else have evil home appliances?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:42pm Jeff:

My watch is powered by a spring. It doesn't need any batteries, and its display doesn't get washed out in bright sunshine.

I can't change the display style or wallpaper, and it can't tell me my heartrate, but I'm actually totally fine with all of that.

My razor has a single blade which touches your face at a time. Available blades are way sharper than the blades in those multi-blade cartridges, while being way cheaper - as little as eleven cents per doublesided blade.

Both of these forms of tech are considered obsolete by some people, but I find them both functional and pleasing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:42pm dale:

we have a nu wave oven, but it's pretty docile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/11/17 6:42pm listener james from westwood:

The secret to acceptance will be kawaii. If they make our machine overlords cute enough, we'll welcome them in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:43pm Jeff:

Did everybody see the hilarious story about the Roomba and the poop, complete with hand-drawn illustration?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/11/17 6:44pm listener james from westwood:

I want to hear from someone with that Nest unit for their home heating/cooling. That seems like a gateway to Internet of Things nightmares.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:44pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I've got a Nest thermostat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:44pm dale:

so who is stoopid enough to have one of those google home type things? or nest thermostats/alarms/
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/11/17 6:45pm listener james from westwood:

Oh, that Bose data-harvesting thing? No irony intended, but FUCK THAT NOISE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:45pm dale:

  Mon. 9/11/17 6:45pm kotrunga:

  Mon. 9/11/17 6:45pm Paul:

It's not so much about wanting to be known, we want convenience. We're happy to give up privacy for convenience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:47pm steve:

only good use of roomba www.youtube.com...
  Mon. 9/11/17 6:48pm Indi Young:

I like to "decorate" my experience online with pretty images. I go shopping for things I don't need (flowers, antiques) and then see those things haunting me for weeks. It's nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:48pm melinda:

@steve: haha. I agree it is best used as a cat vehicle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:49pm Michael 98145:

the more conflicting data about yourself in those databases, the better.
  Mon. 9/11/17 6:49pm Indi Young:

Recently, though, I was "decorating" with light sconces in fun shapes like gryphons, and my partner just started seeing these images in ads on the pages he was visiting at work. (buying equipment) Now he's seeing my "decorations."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:50pm melinda:

Yeah, it's weird when items you look at online start following you around. But I've kind of gotten used to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:50pm dale:

is he 'my girl, bill?'
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/11/17 6:51pm JakeGould:

All the AI for stuff like this now are basically “bias amplifiers.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:51pm BennettCap:

Mark, you have my attention. Great start. A welcome addition to the wfmu lineup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:52pm dale:

melinda - turn the voice recognition off on your pooter. it got creepy when stuff i was talking about over lunch showed up as amazon suggestions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:52pm Michael 98145:

yes, great start, Mark. thanks.

Thanks, Melinda! Thanks, Steve! Bennett! Great conversation tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 6:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I enjoy operating the AC from afar. I don't think the Nest has a microphone. There was a news story this weekend about Tesla sending an over the air (OTA) code update to Floridian's cars to give them extra range to flee the hurricane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/11/17 6:58pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Mark!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/11/17 6:59pm Mark Hurst:

Great point, Ken. That would make a great creep-of-the-week next week. Shouldn't all the power in our tools be OURS to use (at all times)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/11/17 6:59pm Mark Hurst:

Thanks, everyone - see you next week!
  Mon. 9/11/17 7:00pm mr_mikeK:

Data collection is creepy period. We're looking the other way on this nonsense
  Mon. 9/11/17 7:03pm mr_mikeK:

I am in the lost photographs generation. I just came across a hard drive with my honeymoon pics that were lost. But now we don't know what to do with them...buy $200 worth of frames from target and hang them up?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 9/11/17 7:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@mr_mikeK - You might be able to get them onto Google Drive in the cloud. I've got a shelf full of photo albums from 35mm film. I haven't thought about digitizing them as yet.

@davehill Do you have your list of 50 things you want to do before you die?
