Doug, is this a Thai set or a three piece?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 9:19am ausmanx:

very fine start to the show; i'm tired of the Western hemisphere and i think it's now time to boycott the whole thing
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

Trigger warning: The next set will be about as Western Hemisphere as you can get, ausmanx.

Thai set, but I am wearing a three-piece suit, Brian in UK.

Doug, you might say that Harry Smith started something in the 50s. Given that there were so many recordings in the USA alone from WW1 to the Forties; the well in deep.
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

Harry Smith is a personal hero.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 9:38am ausmanx:

i always imagine you in a lounge suit rather than a three-piece, doug. but i suppose it's the wrong time of day there

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 9:41am Brian in UK:

Photographs of him in the Fifties look so modern but then he did have a good eye, if you have seen some of his art works.

Yeah, Delmark and one should mention Nessa, too, were great things to come out of Chicago in terms of opening the eyes and ears to the new thing in the sixties. Of course, Delmark was also a pretty good blues label (and the first to release Anthony Braxton)!
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

Delmark and Nessa. Two of Chicago's greatest exports.

What kind of accent was that one in the Eric Burdon number? I guess I can Google him to see where he is from. It was almost Scottish.

Fri. 8/25/17 11:03am Alex in Illinois:

OkayI just took a Wikipedia dive. I always thought Newcastle was in Scotland, but it is Northumberland, northern England, just south of Scotland.
  Fri. 8/25/17 11:05am Dean:

The Randy Newman/Harry Nilsson connection is sensible. I always think of Nina Simone, if only because of her cover of "Baltimore."
Fri. 8/25/17 11:06am Alex in Illinois:

So that term Hugo used, Geordie, is what they call that borderline Scottish English accent and people.

...and i have several cassettes of the immigrant when he was on monday morning. i've wondered if i digitized them and sent them along if they'd be added to the archives. (?)

i'd prefer the overnight as well, if i had a show; only i'd do mine contrary to the way Stan does his.
he generally makes it spacey then livens it up toward 6am; but i, knowing there are others out there who might take 5 hours falling asleep, would gradually gear it toward sleep.

@coelacanth∅: I've never had a chance to hear the Immigrant and would love to! I don't know if we volunteers can digitize old tapes and put them in the archives, but if so, I'll volunteer!
  Fri. 8/25/17 11:30am Dean:

I first heard of WFMU on October 18, 2005, when a friend sent a link to the mp3 of a Brian Turner show that day. My friend wanted me to hear a tune by Pyha.

I first tuned in WFMU in 1987. It was my post-collegiate college radio station.

I was living in the New York area at the time

You like so sad girl, did he break your heart, sad girl
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

I did fill ins on WFMU for most of '87, then got my own slot in Feb '88. Saved (and continues to save) my life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 11:40am JtotheK:

Peter Nero take on Soulful Strut is pretty good, too.
I forgot that Fab Counts was the flip of Jan Jan. Grant Green album (first issued a few years back...) has a great Jan Jan track.
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

Greatest tambourine part ever?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 11:42am Stanley:

WFMU is my saviour too.
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 11:43am Monica:

friday funk! loves it, doug!
  Fri. 8/25/17 11:43am Mr C:

Doug, you and I landed at the station at roughly the same time. Vanilla Bean was my gateway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 11:44am coelacanth∅:

yeah, back then i didn't want to leave the 91.1 area! i moved to north carolina around 1983 and was out west 5-6 X, but never for more than 4 months at a time.
...now it wouldn't matter as much, with the internet. (though i very much prefer fm)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 11:45am JtotheK:

And my intro to WFMU was Downtown Soulville ... tuned in mainly via the podcast. That has to be 5-8 years ago... Was far too shy to join the WFMU online community until recently (few years ago).
Fri. 8/25/17 11:47am Alex in Illinois:

I might have heard you then. I was able to tune it in when I lived in Dobbs Ferry the first year and Williamsburg in 1988. I was never able to tune it in while in Manhattan, where I worked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 11:48am fred:

Doug, will you plan something for the 30th anniversary of your first "regular" show?
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

M O N I C A !

@Mr. C
Vanilla Bean was my gateway, too! This is what I wrote on a remembrances page for Frank:

Frank Balesteri is the reason I'm at FMU. Back in the spring of '87, I screwed up the courage to call the Vanilla Bean on the phone during this breathtaking show he was perpetrating. He was spinning South African discs while raving about apartheid over, under, and between records. He also was reading news clippings and chanting poetry and it was hugely inspiring.

During that phone call with Frank, he found the time to talk with me about radio in general and WFMU in particular and the freedom he had to say and play anything. He found the time to ask me about what I dug about radio and, when I told him I did radio in college, he warmly encouraged me to call the station manager and gave me the number to reach the WFMU office. I called Ken the next day and came down to the station a few days after that.

Five or six years ago Frank arrived home from a business trip and stepped in to a nightmarish situation with his family. Within hours of discovering this, though, Frank still rushed down to the station to be the MC on my Marathon show that morning. Unsurprisingly, he came up with another virtuoso performance -- his familiar hash of nonsequitors, rants, hilarious word play, heartfelt sincerity, song-lyric quoting, etc. -- all the while personally devastated and full of grief. It was astonishing.

During that Marathon show, I thanked Frank for being so encouraging to me years earlier, and he just shrugged it off and started running through the list of Marathon tchotchkes.

i didn't have an online presence until my antenna input on my receiver broke (around 5 years ago?) but now i work away from home a lot and listen via internet as much as otherwise.

I first read about WFMU in a TV guide in a dentist's waiting room. The first show I heard was Terre T, and I was hooked pretty much instantly. Funny thing is I didn't have a TV (still don't)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 11:53am doctorjazz:

Fine show, Doug, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 11:53am Jeff Golick:

I think Downtown Soulville might've been my gateway, too. Also Greasy Kid Stuff on Saturdays.

This is a pretty good piece on baseball and this year's HOF class, if anyone is interested: hazlitt.net...

THE BEAN! incredibly encouraging to me as well. used to call during my shows when i was on after you on Fridays. At the time he was working in an office building down the block from the station. He was the real deal. Greatly miss his soul and spirit.
