Dean:

I have a proofing question for you, @lfjw. In her 2009 novel, Strangers, Anita Brookner writes at the end of one typically Brooknerian paragraph, "The illusion had, once again, proved superior to the reality." I'm thinking it should read "proven" (past part.). If so, I'm guessing the adverbial phrase distracted her train of thought. She (and her editor) forgot the auxiliary "had" as the sentence progressed.

Dean R. Kibbe:

To whom it may concern:
My name is Dean R. Kibbe. I am 70 years old. I have lived in Port Huron, Michigan, in the United States, since I was a baby. I have PTSD from combat experiences with the U.S. Marine Corps and The Combined Action Program in South Viet Nam so severe that I never leave my home. I have no social life; and, it would not be desirable or safe for me to do so. I am constantly angry and always on guard and combat ready. If you want to know part of the reasons why my case is so much more extreme than usual, you can check out federal suit KIBBE v. UNITED STATES, Case Number: 2:17-cv-12288 in the Eastern District of Michigan. The Complaint, plus Unredacted pages, for the pages redacted by the court clerk's office with no motion by the defendants, can be legally viewed on PAGE NINETY NINE at deanrichardkibbe.net in .pdf format for free. I own all of the original documents legally, which are all either never classified or have been unclassified, all obtained through legal means. You might agree that it would be unrealistic to expect me to even be alive, let alone "normal". You shouldn't worry about what you hear in the news; be worried about what the news doesn't discuss...

Dean:

Indeed, @geezerette. That was my thought, too. I have a hard time imagining Brookner (or her editors) making a serious slip.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:23pm
listener james from westwood:

@Dean: Sorry for my delay! Agree with "proven." The grammar nit in me would like to see "had" moved to be with "proven" after "once again," but preserving author style increasingly leads me to leave such structures alone, if it allows the music of a phrase to sing more clearly. (I do read prose out loud to test this sort of thing.)
Avatar 5:23pm

You are welcome here, Mr. Kibbe.

Also, although I know Dean absolutely wasn't intending it, that reminded me of a writing coach we used to use who would rewrite phrases from classic literature so they were grammatically correct.

This comment is probably grammatically incorrect, but it's been a long day.

Mr. Kibbe, welcome and thank you for sharing. i wish you all the luck in returning to full capacities and in your legal case. best wishes to you.
  5:32pm
Dean:

Thanks, @ljfw. Agreed re: splitting the verb, but I can detect an artistic justification, poetic license, if you will, for the construction, one that transcends mere music. Brookner captures her protagonists, like James with his characters, in the midst of thought. The "once again" is not just an adverb, but a recognition and a sigh of resignation occurring even before the character has fully articulated--to himself, internally--the sad proposition. This is why I love Brookner.

@geezerette: If you enjoy Henry James, you'll enjoy Brookner, though her works tend not to sprawl as much. We lost her a year or two ago, but she left 24 novels and a corpus of art historical scholarly work. She was a gem.
