Hi All! My guest today is Mark Deutrom, you may know him as Mark D of mid 90s Melvins fame, and hopefully know Bellringer, his latest creation! He's got a helluva freeform playlist, and I am starting his music at 12:40! He will be live at 1pm, toss some questions here! Who will I see at Melvins tonight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 8/3/17 12:09pm blee:

i mean RKL, doh, messed that up bad.

I tried to score a ticket yesterday and as I was doing it, I got a notification that the show is sold out!! Debating Asbury Park...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/3/17 12:13pm Cecile:

Not me, but I am going to Bryan Ferry this weekend. So excited.
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 12:14pm V Priceless:

cool @ Cecile -Ferry's always superb
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/3/17 12:14pm Cecile:

I was told that, and he does a lot of non-obvious Roxy picks, so I finally said, yes, I must do this.
Avatar Thu. 8/3/17 12:18pm MenfussMike:

V Priceless there are GA tix for Irviing Plaza on Live Nations site, but they are like $60 after fees!!!!
Avatar Thu. 8/3/17 12:21pm MenfussMike:

And they are $29 in Asbury Park through Ticketbastard
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 12:25pm V Priceless:

thanks @ Menfuss - figures - the base GA price was $ 25 - kinda surprised that tix were only available thru Ticketbastard - Melvins ticket prices are usually more than reasonable. Must be a venue thing...plus, one always needs a little extra cash for all the wonderful Walsby and venue-specific poster art...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 8/3/17 12:25pm Cheri Pi:

RIP Victoria :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/3/17 12:26pm Cecile:

Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 12:40pm PKNY:

Hmm, I picked up a ticket to the AP Melvins show on Saturday at the Stony Pony box office, $22 total.
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 12:42pm V Priceless:

@Menfuss - there is a train line near AP, but sorry to say I know nothing about those logistics.
Avatar Thu. 8/3/17 12:43pm MenfussMike:

thx V.
Avatar Thu. 8/3/17 12:43pm MenfussMike:

this Bellringer reminds me of ZZ Top
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 12:46pm PKNY:

You can take the North Jersey Coast line on NJ Transit to AP, out of Penn Station:

www.njtransit.com...

Keep in mind that NJT has been a shitshow due to tunnel work, and I think it's over a 2 hour train ride from Penn NYC to AP during normal times. Don't know anything about bussing it.

I've parked near the AP train station and walked to the Stone Pony, maybe a 10 minute walk.
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 12:47pm V Priceless:

oh, this is very cool in a Trowery sorta way...
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 12:49pm Chris from DC:

That's what I was trying to put my finger on, Trower. Yup.
Avatar Thu. 8/3/17 12:49pm MenfussMike:

thx PKNY, that's very helpful. I will make sure to leave early enough so I don't miss the ShitShow
  Thu. 8/3/17 12:49pm Polyus:

Making Robin Trower faces to this right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 8/3/17 12:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I'll bet a WFMU ride-share app would be useful for coordinating transportation to & from events. Anyone from the tech team on the comments board?
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 12:52pm Chris from DC:

The strings on this are really nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 8/3/17 12:53pm Threemoons:

Heyo all. Checking in at a new time as my temp gig came to a sudden end yesterday, so I'll be sleeping through Clay's show for a while....
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 12:54pm V Priceless:

wow - I need this - great stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 8/3/17 12:54pm Threemoons:

@PKNY as a headsup, my now-ended gig involved the PATH in the AM, and that is a total shitshow also, along with the subways, which are currently Dante-eque in their level of malfunctioning.
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 12:56pm Chris from DC:

Where can one find that Empire Sands?
Avatar Thu. 8/3/17 1:01pm MenfussMike:

Any places to get a bite to drink in Asbury Park? Cool dives? sites?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 8/3/17 1:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Threemoons - I'll miss your presence on Wake 'n' Bake. I hope your new job works out well for you. Fortunately, the weekly HazMat report is in the archives.
  Thu. 8/3/17 1:02pm Readie Righteous:

Hey @threemoons sorry about the gig, that's a drag. Will miss ya on W & B-I'm checkin in on my lunch bake, uh break.
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 1:03pm PKNY:

@MenFussMike: I'm a fan of Johnny Mac's on Cookman. Right near the train station, and every drink you buy, you get a ticket for a free personal pizza. Mogos on Cookman (they have a booth on the boardwalk as well) have tasty Korean tacos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 8/3/17 1:04pm Threemoons:

@Ken, @Readie, thank you! Hopefully will get another gig soon, in which case I'll be back in the Coop with the rest of the flock. I still want to visit the WFMU HQ in JC one day when the dust settles...
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 1:05pm V Priceless:

@MenFuss - the venue actually does decent scaled-down pub fare, etc.
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 1:06pm PKNY:

Edit - Johnny Mac's in on Main Street in AP, right near Cookman and Main meet.
Avatar Thu. 8/3/17 1:07pm MenfussMike:

thx

Herbie Mann is The Man!
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 1:10pm PKNY:

You can follow Cookman all the way down to the AP boardwalk/ocean to get to the Stone Pony, and there's all sorts of restaurants/shops along the way.

Cool interview. Don't know much about Mark and always loved watching him play and his bitchin' 10 gallon hat. First saw him opening for KISS
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 8/3/17 1:36pm Threemoons:

FWIW I have not been to the Stone Pony in like 20 years; it was ages ago for a rare revival show including the original lineup of the Dictators....never had the food there just remember drinking a lot...

Mark's set is some much-needed ear ointment - yeah!
  Thu. 8/3/17 1:48pm Polyus:

Dumb question: Who else is singing here? I never owned this record.
  Thu. 8/3/17 1:48pm Mark R:

"Machine Gun" is always fantastic. Not the Experience, of course, but the Band of Gypsys, but who cares? And yes, that's how Jimi spelled the plural of Gypsy. Polyus, drummer Buddy Miles is the other voice on this.
Avatar Thu. 8/3/17 1:49pm Mister Dobalina:

So awesome, you can hear the acid in full effect.
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 1:50pm Chris from DC:

The Isley's live version is also pretty epic.
Avatar Thu. 8/3/17 1:50pm MenfussMike:

Buddy Miles
Avatar Thu. 8/3/17 1:51pm MenfussMike:

or What Mark R. said
  Thu. 8/3/17 1:51pm Mark R:

After Jimi got famous, the Isley's never passed up a chance to remind people that Jimi had played in their band for about 30 seconds in 1964.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/3/17 1:54pm Cecile:

And why wouldn't they? Ernie Isley modeled his whole career after Jimi.
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 1:59pm V Priceless:

Mark sounds a bit like Dennis Dunaway
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/3/17 2:00pm Luna:

  Thu. 8/3/17 2:03pm Polyus:

I thought Gene owned a restaurant? Or maybe it was just a plan that never bore fruit. I remember reading something about that a few years ago.
Avatar Thu. 8/3/17 2:05pm MenfussMike:

Yes Polyus, they are opening a shit load of Rock n Brews restaurants including plans for 10 in Chicago
  Thu. 8/3/17 2:08pm Polyus:

Indeed, Mike

but Gene is pro-money.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 8/3/17 2:12pm Threemoons:

Jesus, just clicked through to the Rockandbrews site. Paul Stanley is totally working the "fashionable Jewish grandma" look. Holy cow.
Avatar Thu. 8/3/17 2:12pm MenfussMike:

well Threemoons he did tolerate Ace and Peter for years. I think he's ok with it if it makes him a buck
Avatar Thu. 8/3/17 2:12pm MenfussMike:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/3/17 2:15pm Cecile:

Bartok!

Name the ensemble playing it, Cecile.
  Thu. 8/3/17 2:16pm Polyus:

@Cecile - I can't hear that song without instantly think of Homer's version.
  Thu. 8/3/17 2:16pm Dean:

I'll guess Juilliard, but which recording?
  Thu. 8/3/17 2:17pm Dean:

Bingo...but which recording? The third traversal, I'll guess.
  Thu. 8/3/17 2:19pm Dean:

I.e., 1982.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/3/17 2:21pm Cecile:

I think I have that box set of the Bartok.
  Thu. 8/3/17 2:22pm Dean:

I don't, but I have the 1965 Columbia box, the 1988 Emerson CDs, and assorted other performances by, e.g., Vegh, Chilingirian, of selected quartets. Desert island music, for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/3/17 2:23pm ChrisVB:

SWEET PROG SET!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 8/3/17 2:23pm maestroso:

Man, this set is giving me chills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/3/17 2:23pm Cecile:

Maybe I have the 1965 Columbia box. I do believe I do.
  Thu. 8/3/17 2:24pm Dean:

Has a photo of the boys seated in chairs, much less evocative than the '82 cover.
  Thu. 8/3/17 2:26pm Dean:

Kronos played a Bartok quartet (3? 5? 6?) at an early concert, I remember. Encore was a medley of TV theme show songs.

Yes! That's it. It's one of the handful of classical records I own.
  Thu. 8/3/17 2:28pm Dean:

Ah, he's talking about the '65 Columbia box, rec'd '63. One of the landmarks of classical music recordings, although the liner notes make no mention of Slayer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 8/3/17 2:29pm chris:

had that vishnu album on an mp3 player, way back in the day when my kiddo was maybe three. he'd listen to that album over and over again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 8/3/17 2:29pm Michael 98145:

( loving this )
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/3/17 2:30pm Cecile:

It was recommended to me by a former boss.
I also liked playing Bartok, Samuel Barber, etc than more tuneful pieces when I took piano lessons back in the day.
  Thu. 8/3/17 2:31pm Dean:

Folks don't often realize that Barber wrote some knotty Modernist pieces, not just the lovely Adagio (which was originally for a string quartet).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/3/17 2:31pm Cecile:

I loved anything modern. My teacher was kind of surprised, because I actually put feeling into my playing then.
  Thu. 8/3/17 2:32pm Dean:

And Bartok's Mikrokosmos is, well, a tiny world all its own.
Avatar    Thu. 8/3/17 2:32pm V Priceless:

In Concert on ABC: Alice Cooper, '72, + Deep Purple, '73, both filmed @ Hofstra Playhouse - must see TV!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/3/17 2:32pm Cecile:
