Good morning Joe and noisemakers. Never heard hugging as a transition from shows before. Nice way to pass the baton.

Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 9:16am Joe McG:

Hey, Sem, pantz, Cooh John (I agree, more hugging), and paul. Remind me, who is Oral Hersheiser? A speed skater?

I saw what you did there, Sem ol' Chumbo. Keeping our ears healthy with Surface Noise.

Mornin' y'all! Years ago a friend of mine declared "Reggae Summer," and listened to nothing but for the entire season. This music still instantly puts me in a summer state of mind.

I knew police and thieves was a cover. I always thought they wrote AT. Thanks, @Joe.
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 9:33am Joe McG:

@The Oscar: I like the contrast between what they're singing about, which is how pissed off they feel, and the relaxed sound.

"A bit too much polish" -- agreed, I really can't stand reggae that's too polished or overproduced. Ahem. Not that you ever hear enough of that to choke a horse on WFMU on another show. Nope. Never! ;) :P
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/31/17 9:49am Planet Tyler:

Joe, were you using Scott Williams background music or was i imagining that?
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 9:50am Sem Chumbo:

Yes, this is a fine thing for sure. Fairport forever.

Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 9:53am Wild Neil:

Peace all. I like Raggea...and most of my music in a minor key when possible. I like the real old reggae like the stuff on The Harder They Come.
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 9:54am northguineahills:

I believe there was also a double cd comp of Fairport's pre-1973 output also called "Come all ye"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/31/17 9:54am KP:

Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 9:56am northguineahills:

point, the Congos when produced by Lee Perry were superbly amazing, when they later got money and sounded like R&B reggae in the 90s, they were horrid.

Admirable, @ βrian. Mr. Prine has a poet's soul and an enviable way with the language.

I hear that similarity in Trevor Lucas' voice, now that I listen again. Just a bit more baritone. And he doesn't have the copper-like timbre that Richard has.

this is the most stressful music imaginable to assemble ikea furniture to omg....love it though

haha Mandy that cracked me up!
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 11:21am Joe McG:

Ha ha ha, Mandy! It will help you speed up.
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 11:21am JakeGould:

This music is not stressful. Chris Christie intimidating a fan in a ballpark while holding a thing of nacho is stressful.
  Mon. 7/31/17 11:22am melinda:

@coelecanth haha

it's like keystone cops assembling ikea furniture
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/31/17 11:24am steveo:

@coelacanth∅: Yesterday I learned that the first syllable of your handle does not rhyme with "Joel", but is rather pronounced "see". I have only ever read that word. I still have no idea how to pronounce ∅.

This set is perfect for sitting here at my desk, no IKEA furniture needed.
  Mon. 7/31/17 11:24am Mandy:

@Jake, bluegrass is my jam when I'm scooting down the highway but not when I'm trying to read swedish furniture directions
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/31/17 11:24am BronwynB:

good morning joe and everyone. i agree with this song title.
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 11:26am Joe McG:

I know I'm asking for trouble by playing a song with this title!
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 11:27am coelacanth∅:

steveo i mispronounced it myself for a long time -having only read about it and not knowing it was latin based, until a friend corrected me.

bad music is still better than TV. To me anyway

I hate TV
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/31/17 11:29am The Oscar:

@steveo @coelocanth I'll admit to only knowing how to pronounce it from the late '90s Volkswagen ad.
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 11:31am βrian:

I can't hate TV until I get one. That's probably not going to happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/31/17 11:31am steveo:

"You Don't Miss Your Water" is a soul song and the debut single written and recorded by American singer William Bell. It was released by Stax Records in 1961. It is Bell's signature song and best known recording.
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 11:32am Joe McG:

@Brian: Excellent idea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/31/17 11:32am steveo:

Cool beans. I was misremembering this as a Dylan song, recalling the Byrds version.
  Mon. 7/31/17 11:32am Listener Alexandra:

Joe, one of these months, can you play the Triffids version of this song? Please???
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 11:32am JakeGould:

Modern TV is not like old fashioned TV. I think the whole concept of “bingable” multi-episode series shows is ridiculous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/31/17 11:33am steveo:

Digging the picking on this version.
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 11:33am βrian:

Foecal is is pronounced that way, too. Just so you know ...

Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 11:33am coelacanth∅:

for me, as much as i dislike tv, in general, there is one and only one kind of music the majority of which would be worse to hear than a tv.
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 11:34am Joe McG:

@Alex: Sure, one of these days! I love that song so much I could play it every week.

  Mon. 7/31/17 11:35am Listener Alexandra:

Could you do an entire show or at least a set of "You Don't Miss Your Water"?
  Mon. 7/31/17 11:35am melinda:

Jake I think people binge in part because of the new formats that encourage it. Some of the shows are actually good, too.
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 11:36am JakeGould:

I know people “poo poo” it but I really like the fact I can watch movies and TV shows on my phone. And yes, it’s not like watching a movie in a theater, but honestly most modern movies are not the kind that demand a full theater. Like documentaries? I have no reason to sit in a dark theater and watch a documentary that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/31/17 11:37am steveo:

@Joe: the custard-suckin' didn't suck

@coel: that's funny about the pronunciation

@β: good mnemonic; probably could use a œ, right?
Avatar Mon. 7/31/17 11:37am Joe McG:

Thanks, Mark! @Alex: That's not a bad idea!

βrian, someone will take issue with me, but i'm fairly used that so!
...no - rap music of the posturing, aggressive, winey but somehow supposedly badass variety. (i'm clearly not sure how to appropriately describe it or categorise it) ...but the kind of rap that i sometimes endure at my favorite pub, that if it goes on for a while changes the atmosphere to a macho, bravado filled, tense bullshitfest.
i'd rather hear a tv than that, if i average out a variety of tv programming.

On this show I identified "Eastern Rain" as a Gordon Lightfoot song. Whoops! It's Joni Mitchell, of course. I guess I was thinking of "Early Morning Rain."
