I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Good afternoon Mayuko and all
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:06pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, fred! Thanks for checking out my fill-in show in the archives!
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:10pm fred:

Thanks for playing Nox Factio! I'm pretty sure it's the first time I've heard them on the station
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:14pm fred:

This Rasulbakhsh track was nice. Was that Eastern Iranian?
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:16pm Mayuko:

It was from Baloutchistan - I had no idea where that was - apparently it's a province in Pakistan.
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:18pm Mayuko:

Glad you introduced me to Nox Factio, just couldn't find the right spot for it for a long time.
There must be more many hidden gems in FMA that haven't got played yet like that!
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:19pm tmoyo:

Hi Mayuko and listeners! I opened the WFMU homepage to listen to your show, but got sidetracked by the top video. Clay Pigeon and SM Ken on Japanese television NHK!!! クロ現!! WTF... I wished I had stumbled upon the program in real time.
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:25pm Mayuko:

Haha! Yeah, I was like WTF too when I heard that NHK was gonna come to the station. Haven't watched the video yet. I should check how they represented us, either as a great radio station consist of geniuses, or a bunch of weirdos forming up a dysfunctional radio family.
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:27pm Mayuko:

NHK can be awful sometimes, but this reminded me, I love their summer science call-in radio show for children! I gotta check the new archives!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 7/15/17 12:29pm Brian in UK:

Hello Mayuko. I think it is a combination of the two. (12:25 comment)
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:30pm fred:

Sorry, but I don't see how "a great radio station consisting of geniuses" and "a bunch of weirdos forming up a dysfunctional radio family" exclude each other
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:31pm fred:

@Brian in UK: did you see the report?
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:37pm tmoyo:

It was about people getting tired about Trump, and avoiding the news. WFMU was represented as somebody's go-to station to avoid political news...(while showing Clay reading the morning news, which was kinda odd and a little misleading when you think about what he's done in his old show).

BTW, what's the name of the science program?
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:40pm Mayuko:

Well, I just prefer to be a great radio station consist of mentally healthy functioning geniuses... but you guys are right...

& welcome on board, Brian in UK!
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:43pm fred:

I'd love to see what Takamitsu Ohta used to make this piece
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 7/15/17 12:43pm Brian in UK:

Mayuko, seen nothing yet. You cannot have left without having right.
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:45pm Mayuko:

tmoyo, it's called 夏休み子ども科学電話相談! It's so good! I always listen on youtube!

That's kind of funny, I think I just heard Michael Shelley talking about Vietnam war and other political thing in the library, haha. Though I couldn't catch all the details since I was on the way out of the library.
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:47pm tmoyo:

Thanks Mayuko, I'll check that out!
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:50pm Mayuko:

@tmoyo It's a radio show for children to call in to ask a group of scientists some questions they have about the world, space, animals, insects, nature, everything. It sometimes even get philosophical, and sometimes there are questions scientists struggle to answer. Makes me realize how little I know the wonder of this world we're living in! I wish it was in English and everyone could listen too. Maybe something similar thing must exist in the US too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 7/15/17 12:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hiyo, all. Watching the NHK video on another tab. I recognized DJ Meghan once I saw her tattoo. For future reference: youtu.be...
  Sat. 7/15/17 12:52pm P-90:

Hi Mayuko and friends! Your Facebook post about living between two worlds was very poetic and moving. And the art piece was superb.
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:52pm fred:

I admit I never really gave Michael Shelley's show a chance. It's been when I catch up with Billy Jam
  Sat. 7/15/17 12:52pm P-90:

@Ken FHP: Thanks for the link
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:53pm Mayuko:

Hello, Ken! Thanks for tuning in! & good afternoon P-90, glad to have you here too and thank you for your kind words!
  Sat. 7/15/17 12:58pm Jesse k:

I'm here!
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 12:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello Mayuko! Happy to be coming to NYC. I hope to meet you in person!
  Sat. 7/15/17 12:58pm rw:

Hello!
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:06pm tmoyo:

Trump fatigue, they said.

I KNOW!!! I was like where's Mayuko.
  Sat. 7/15/17 1:09pm Rickwaukee:

I refuse to watch video in protest of Mayuko not being STAR FEATURED SUBJECT!
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:09pm fred:

I'll miss you, but having Jeff M on the radio is a rare treat, so that's a great choice
  Sat. 7/15/17 1:13pm rw:

tmoyo, thanks for the general translation! I skimmed that video last night but since I don't understand Jampnese I couldn't make sense of it.
  Sat. 7/15/17 1:13pm rw:

Japanese
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:17pm tmoyo:

Today's show with the green image feels like Wimbledon happening in another dimension.

@rw I might be missing something since i was too baffled to really listen. I guess they were sort of complimenting, by saying that the station was clearing the public airspace from the toxic inundation of Trump related news
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 7/15/17 1:20pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@tmoyo - Yes, like SM Ken mentioned during the marathon. People can find sanctuary at WFMU.
  Sat. 7/15/17 1:21pm rw:

tmoyo, Ha! I like that!
  Sat. 7/15/17 1:22pm P-90:

Haha, I like Station Manager Ken's Japanese translation voice! He sounds like one of those Japanese game show hosts...
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:23pm Mayuko:

Hello, Jesse! Doug! I will email after the show - was trying to figure out the working schedule for the next week which was depending on the proceed of yesterday, excited you're coming to NYC!!
Hellos rw, Rickwaukee, great to have you here!
  Sat. 7/15/17 1:24pm P-90:

Also fun to see Clay working, as captured by a TV news crew
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:24pm Mayuko:

Of course, Japanese people would praise you for not talking about politics, haha.... Just kidding!
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:26pm fred:

Somehow, I love how Clay is now part of what Japan sees of the US. Maybe not representative of it all, but kinda like the best about that place
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:26pm tmoyo:

@P-90 True! so weird and surreal since I watch that program from time to time..Never in a million years did I think WFMU would be on NHK..
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:28pm tmoyo:

@fred Clay strikes such a great balance on being opinionated and being a decent human being.
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:31pm Mayuko:

I agree, I love that Clay was the one who represented us and the US there too!
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:36pm fred:

This Satomimagae is quite nice
  Sat. 7/15/17 1:37pm Rickwaukee:

Tou song is my mood almost always.
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:40pm Mayuko:

Satomi has her stuff available online, which is always good for oversea listeners like myself! On her bandcamp and Tokyo label White Paddy Mountain. satomimagae.bandcamp.com
chiheihatakeyama.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:43pm fred:

Euglossine reminds me of some Sakamoto stuff I haven't listened to in years
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:45pm Mayuko:

I"m still thinking it's a bit bummer that it was kind of overlooked how political actually it is to have a freeform/non-sponsored radio station. It IS political to have this entity that lets peoples voices heard freely. This is something Japanese people can totally do too and is a great way to be empowered - I knew so, so, so many obsessed music lovers, extremely knowledgeable, who actually have strong opinions there who can totally make an amazing freeform radio station.
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:46pm Mayuko:

fred! I was thinking pretty much the same thing, too! If someone told me this was from 80's Japan I would have believed it without questioning.
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:49pm Doug Schulkind:

That at its core WFMU refuses to align itself with the corrupting influence of commercial interest, it is a subversive organization. Making radio at WFMU is itself a political act.
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:50pm tmoyo:

So true Mayuko. I wished that happened. Beautiful show tonight..
  Sat. 7/15/17 1:53pm Rickwaukee:

Best politicians know when to keep it to themself - we are finding that out bigly at this time
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:54pm Mayuko:

@Doug That's exactly what I think it is!!
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 1:56pm Doug Schulkind:

And political acts are usually best represented by deeds not words.
  Sat. 7/15/17 1:56pm rw:

Yes. Beautiful show! Thank you Mayuko! Enjoy your week off!
Later, kids!
  Sat. 7/15/17 1:57pm P-90:

Thank you, Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 7/15/17 1:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Mayuko. See you in a couple weeks for more vertigo.
  Sat. 7/15/17 2:00pm Rickwaukee:

My brain IS Thor - when Mayuko misses a show! Thanks, Big M
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 2:01pm paul b:

Doug Thats the way I've always thought of WFMU too. Some of this stems from my time at U. Maryland's station WMUC where our mere existence as a free form punk rock station just seemed to antagonize a startingly large amount of people. Coming from 4 yrs in the Navy it suddenly seemed these sorts of fights were the fights worth having. I add that Jeff Krulick (Heavy Metal parking lot) was the person who brought me into that fight, Along with Steve Kiviat who really ought to be doing a show on the Drummer stream.
  Sat. 7/15/17 2:01pm Jesse k:

Thanks Mayuko!
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 2:01pm fred:

Thanks again Mayuko, maybe someday you can use overtime to play the second side of that Nox Factio tape
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 2:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Great to see (read) you, Paul B! Tell me more about Steve. (You can email me doug ( at ) wfmu (dot) org. He is connected to WAMU?
Avatar Sat. 7/15/17 2:07pm Mayuko:

Thank you for sharing that story, paul b! To learn these College Radio station culture and independent radio culture in the US was an eye-opening experience for me. I'm glad now I'm a small part of it too and would like to learn more about it.
