I'd seen my share of shows at Loeb, but don't recall why I didn't attend that one. It wasn't because of a lack of interest, as I owned and loved the Stiff 45. Probably had to choose between the show and a veggie burger at Dojo.
  9:49pm
herb.nyc:

Fun show! And Loeb has become Kimmel Student Center. A wnyu dj learned me of students saying Bob's Library and not Bobst. I used to "hang around" those 2 places despite not being a student.

And the Escher-esque so-called suicide-proof tile on the Bobst floor was clearly an urban legend (as it didn't deter jumpers at all, sadly).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Someone needs to do a show comprised of great singles that were wrecked by record company meddling on subsequent versions, like We Got the Beat, X's White Girl and Uncertain Smile.
  10:04pm
Julie M Brooklyn:

Oh boy. That hits the spot Evan.

Hi EFD. Thank you for the memories. Used to listen to you on WNYU when I was in high school. Great to hear Polyrock, Blue Orchids et al again. I've a sudden urge to hear Six by the Neats. Did you happen to bring that along in your grab bag?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm

thanks Robert, I'm sure you're looking forward to finishing college soon. :D
will try to get the Neats on for you.

Jesus. What a show I've been missing. In the day, I would have called much of this music "Punk". Then again, I lived in Denver. We were not up on the cutting edge.

much of this music WAS called punk at the time, Stevel!

Stevel:

Always a surprise in the New Wave bin. I'd successfully buy albums based entirely on the cover. The Clash/Give 'me Enough Rope, Stranglers/Black and White, T Heads/More Songs..., Not so much 80s, I know, but so much originality was available, seemingly via one scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

Thx EFD. If you can't dig up the Neats, I'd settle for Tribes by Soul. I think that was definitely a top 40 hit at the time. College?!!? That's a whole 'nother time with a whole bunch of other bands!

  10:21pm

Human League should be followed by Peace of Mind by the Swinging Laurels ...
  10:28pm

evan, play the flip of thr nervus rex single, I think it's called 'love affair'' I haven't heard it in decades and if I remember properly, it's great
  10:29pm
herb.nyc:

When I pass Kimmel, I still see a guard who was there in 80s! I think Bob's Library has Fales Collection, and I think a Riot Grrl (KHanna?)left memorabilia there. Wonder what else they have. / Wednesday sked unchanged? Ugh, that means Andy Breckman on 7SD? I joke, I adopted him. He's a nice Jewish boy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
efd:

not a bad thought, Robert.
Michael - solid requests, but weirdly I never got around to picking up any Fall records. And I still feel a little funny about playing that Cosmopolitans single tbh, even though I don't play on it (and certainly don't stand to make any sort of gain from airing it in any case). It's not even in my 70s/80s boxes in fact, I should move it in there.
  10:30pm
bob:

John cale produced a song called I'm afraid of the Russians. Do you have that? Also Johnny thunders produced justin trouble ponytsil which would also be great to hear. Do you know a sibgle called baby baby that had a picture label and no other info? A porky prime cut was in the matrix. Great show!

A few years ago, The (English) Beat and the (Paul Collins) Beat — each of which ca. 1980 was forced to affix the respective qualifiers to their identical band names — played together under the tour name "Two Beats Hearting as One"! weird to recall how dangerously radical this album was when it was released.

Late to the surprise party tonight. I need cheering up so I'll be listening again on the archives. Some belated comments ...
@JakeGould: Congrats on the first covfefe reference of the night!
@EFD: Agreed on Tina Turner. There are some other lost gems on that BEF album/box set. Also, if you can play The Jam twice in a month, you can play Teardrop Explodes again!
@Fleep: Rodney on the ROQ ends his long reign this weekend.
@Stevel: We had a New Wave bin at my local suburban record shop. If I'd bought every album in it, I'd be cashed up now, i.e. many subsequent rarities.
@herb.nyc: I think the Richard Hell collection is at Fales too.

it's not all that long ago that Pat stopped doing his show, and he was already old enough that it was clear his tastes wouldn't become closed-minded. (or "mature", as some might say)

This should have been a live remote from Hitsville in Passaic, New Jersey.

hey Eddy! Fair point re Teardrop, but not sure if I'll be able to squeeze them in at this point. Sorry you need some cheering up but hope this show/archive will help!

ODW was what 80s street comedian Albert Owens had in mind when he described this music as "a bunch of guys standing around playing video games."

@T-O-P Todd: Hitsville is one of the best names ever for a club. My friend had a hot sauce store in Melbourne called Hotsville.

I believe "Big Tears" first LP appearance was on the Taking Liberties compilation. At least, that's where I first heard it.
