Live performance and chat with Nikitov

Keeping Yiddish music alive and vibrant is very important to Nikitov's lead singer Niki Jacobs. Over the course of fifteen years, four albums and an EP, Jacobs' Netherlands-based ensemble has been keeping the Yiddish tradition of music alive. Nikitov is touring the US with a new album, "Mameloshn" and they performed a lovely set as a trio on WFMU.

Interview with Phillip Johnston of The Microscopic Septet

Notable as an ensemble that defies categories, The Microscopic Septet describe themselves as a wickedly clever, raucously fun jazz band. The Micros have a long, tale-filled library of tunes dating to the 1980's, almost innumerable performances and a number of great albums, most recently on the Cuneiform label. One of the two bandleaders, Soprano Saxophonist Phillip Johnston, chatted about the Microscopic Septet and their new album, "Been Up So Long It Looks Like Down to Me."

Listener comments!

Tue. 5/23/17 9:05pm Tommy Jack Haynes:

There's like no reverb on this
Tue. 5/23/17 9:05pm Tommy Jack Haynes:

But anyway it's very nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 9:06pm Irene Trudel:

You're right, Tommy! Very stark and lovely.
Tue. 5/23/17 9:09pm Tommy Jack Haynes:

One of the FMU DJs ( Chris T , I think) interviewed her (.Nico)..she was kind of provocotive
Tue. 5/23/17 9:10pm Tommy Jack Haynes:

Blood Sweat and Tears , Really ? WOW
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 9:12pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, off their first album. One of my favorite albums and so different from what came after.
Tue. 5/23/17 9:14pm Tommy Jack Haynes:

Something from Elvis Costello's " The Juliet Letters" would fit quite nicely into this set of string quartet music
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/23/17 9:15pm upsetter5001:

Perfect start. Always forget about the LP Child Is Father To The Man. Wonderful stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 9:16pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Upsetter!
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 9:17pm Tusalava:

I was JUST thinking about how much I love this song, and then you played it!

I'm not saying you're psychic, but I'm not Not saying it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 9:17pm Irene Trudel:

From my brain to your ears, Tusalava!
  Tue. 5/23/17 9:18pm Todd:

Never realized how much Rufus Wainwright's Oh What a World This Is owes to Richard McGraw
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 9:18pm Tusalava:

Better leave my brain out of this.

It is a silly place.
Tue. 5/23/17 9:24pm Tommy Jack Haynes:

Some of the music reminds of of Pat Metheny's" As goes Wichita so goes Wichita Falls"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 9:29pm redkayak:

Good evening all :)
  Tue. 5/23/17 9:32pm Bruce S.:

Hi Irene - The first set is setting a great tone of reflection and great sounds. I surely am here for the duration. Thanks
  Tue. 5/23/17 9:33pm Bruce S.:

will miss you and your tunes -have a great SUMMER
  Tue. 5/23/17 9:34pm Listener Robert:

"This Old Heart of Mine" reminded ME of "Paris 1919" too...so much so that I thought they were by the same artist or that one had been the first movement of the other.
  Tue. 5/23/17 9:41pm herb.nyc:

Irene sees a saxophonist on subway? I oft see a jazz guy who knows musician son of trombonist / writer mike zwerin. (My Pledge was mangled. I told joe. He told me to go to he..., oh I joke, he apologized and fixed it.). Play on, and enjoy yr summer, Irene. We will patiently wait (by reading m.z.'s The Parisian Jazz Chronicles? I've a $1 copy.).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 9:44pm JakeGould:

Hi!
  Tue. 5/23/17 10:01pm herb.nyc:

Nice music. Now this is meant to be humorous and not to offend, but the band's name made me think of writer Gary Shteyngart. He coined TIMATOV, short for Think I'm About To Vomit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/23/17 10:15pm Ken From Hyde Park:

This reminds me ... when will a WFMU DJ do a show that is all covers of Stairway to Heaven? Or has that already happened?
     Tue. 5/23/17 10:21pm mcginniwa:

We'll miss you over the summer Irene!
Tue. 5/23/17 10:28pm listening out there:

Have a great summer, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 10:32pm JakeGould:

That was great, Irene! And I grew up in a home with parents who spoke Yiddish and Polish mixed with English. Not always to hide what they were saying, but just because.

And FWIW, klezmer never does it for me. Straight Yiddish singing is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/23/17 10:40pm melinda:

Good evening Irene and folks. I like your record shelves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 10:43pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Jake, herb, Ken, mcginniwa, and melinda. Glad you've been enjoying the show. It's my last for the summer-- hope to be back in September. The record shelves, are just the ones in our living room. There are CD shelves down a long hall and ANOTHER room with more record shelves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 10:46pm JakeGould:

@IreneTrudel: Mama mia! That amount of media makes my back twitch a bit; lugged boxes of less than that back in the day. This is why I am happy to support this station: I might be 99% digital nowadays, I haver to support people who curate collections like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 10:47pm Irene Trudel:

Jake, it's a bit out of control. Weeding some of it out is one of my summer projects.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 10:54pm northguineahills:

Tonic used to have a klezmer brunch on Sundays, sometimes w/ Zorn projects. Those were fun....
  Tue. 5/23/17 11:01pm tp:

good times indeed
@northguineahills
  Tue. 5/23/17 11:40pm KP:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 11:42pm Irene Trudel:

Catching my last 20 minutes before I'm off for the summer, KP!
  Tue. 5/23/17 11:53pm KP:

The summer? Nooo. ... well enjoy it. See you in September, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 11:54pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, thanks KP and everybody! I'll turn up soon.
  Tue. 5/23/17 11:56pm KP:

yay!
