Apropos to hear from SMERSH the day a James Bond dies. And hey, Wayne Butane. Lookin' forward to this one!
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 12:01pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, James!

Very true re Smersh!
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Tho, of course, SMERSH was a real organization, not just a Bond invention: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 12:05pm listener james from westwood:

New SMERSHsey!
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

Oops! Forgot to add the in-theme to the tracklist -- but, well, I'm sure you knew what was going on.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 12:09pm Tony Coulter:

FMU's Pseu Braun guests on one of the Smersh releases (not this one, tho).
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

Oh, forgot to mention: The Smersh cassette is the green one on the left in the playlist pic.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 12:13pm Tony Coulter:

Also, I'm wagering someone will be able to ID the LP jacket underneath today's cassettes, despite the fact that only a small part is visible. Guesses, anyone?

Hello all

Hey there, Psychspaniolos!
  Tue. 5/23/17 12:18pm Yvang:

Hey Tony! My guess is Blancmange...
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 12:19pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Yvang!

Nope, it's not Blancmange. But it is a pretty well known '80s album.

Hey Tony! Is the art by Barney Bubbles?
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 12:33pm Tony Coulter:

Nix to Buzzcocks and Barney Bubbles.

Hiya, VP!
  Tue. 5/23/17 12:33pm Dean:

I was thinking Malcolm Garrett, hence 'cocks.

This thing is going to be tough to do an accuplaylist for, I suspect -- but I'll give it a shot.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

The cassette on now has the price written on it on the back in pen: "$3 or trade."
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 1:15pm Tony Coulter:

The original price, I mean....

Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 1:30pm Mayuko:

This Blender Blender tape has been really fun.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 1:31pm Mayuko:

I guess "fun" is not exactly the right word, but.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

Glad you like it, Mayuko! Seems to be really obscure too, so I'm happy to be able to air it.

Heya Tony and listeners.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 1:35pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, Carmichael!
  Tue. 5/23/17 1:39pm Dean:

The etymology of the word "clown" is more knotted up than a balloon animal! This reminds me of a birthday present a bunch of us pitched in to acquire for a buddy of ours when he turned 25 (over 30 years ago). We hired an actor to dress up as Mr. Klün, a clown with an Eastern European temperament, and shadow our buddy for the entire day. When we took him out to lunch, Mr. Klün joined us. And so forth.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 1:41pm Tony Coulter:

Mr. Klün! I like it!
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 1:42pm Rich in Washington:

I read that Ringling Bros. finally folded up their tents after nearly 150 years. Expect to see a lot of clowns on street corners with 'will clown for food' signs.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 1:43pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Rich!
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 1:44pm Rich in Washington:

a clown sprays your windshield with an impossibly giant seltzer bottle he'd somehow had hidden in his coat. Another clown wipes your window down with a large pair of polka dot boxer shorts. You suddenly realize they were yours.
  Tue. 5/23/17 1:45pm Dean:

My favorite clown: http://cdn1.walkerartcenter.org/static/cache/62/62456acef6d6e28c541098de18d322d0.jpg
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: So you're saying that now that Ringling Bros. has closed, clowns will be forced to become squeegee men?
  Tue. 5/23/17 1:47pm Dean:

There's always public office.
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 1:48pm Rich in Washington:

It's the clownfall of western civilization.
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 1:48pm Rich in Washington:

@Dean: '..don't bother, they're here.'
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 1:49pm Tony Coulter:

"The Golden Yawn"
  Tue. 5/23/17 1:49pm Dean:

Isn't it, Rich?
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 1:49pm Rich in Washington:

I don't think it's a coincidence that in the months leading up the the US presidential election, there was a deluge of scary clown sighting stories.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 1:55pm Tony Coulter:

By the by, there are no track titles listed on this cassette.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 1:56pm listener james from westwood:

Right outta the gate Butane goes!
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 1:58pm Rich in Washington:

Wayne is nuts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 1:58pm listener james from westwood:

Tube Bar AND "Shut Up, Little Man!"
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 2:02pm Rich in Washington:

All kinds of bits of debris. I even hear some Residents in there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 2:04pm listener james from westwood:

I remember these Verbal Advantage ads!
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 2:09pm Rich in Washington:

little tiny bits of Negativland in there.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 2:10pm Tony Coulter:

I would think all Negativland fans would have to also like Wayne Butane.
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 2:11pm Rich in Washington:

I have the feeling Wayne made this with two cassette decks, similar to early Cassetteboy. 1995 sampling technology was really tedious and computers weren't really good at cutting up audio yet.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

Definitely operating in the same ballpark, I'd say.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

Ngeativland and Butane, I mean. Funny, as neither are sports doctors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/23/17 2:12pm Santos L. Halper:

Returned from lunch in time for a blast of Butane. Excellent...
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 2:13pm V Priceless:

man hours compiling/recording/editing this must have been insane
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Santos!
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

@ VP: Was thinking the same thing!
  Tue. 5/23/17 2:14pm Mark Williams:

it's less in clown hours.
  Tue. 5/23/17 2:14pm Mark Williams:

manic energy and all that.
  Tue. 5/23/17 2:15pm Dean:

Interesting rendition of a Byrds' song.
  Tue. 5/23/17 2:16pm Dean:

"Turn, turn, turn..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 2:16pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 2:19pm V Priceless:

this is really brilliant
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/23/17 2:21pm listener james from westwood:

That "Go fuck yourself" was from a New Zoo Revue snippet that is FLORIDLY filthy.
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 2:29pm V Priceless:

haha Eddie Murphy 'Honeymooners' clip
  Tue. 5/23/17 2:31pm Yvang:

This reminds me of this thing on public access called 'Concrete TV'
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 2:31pm Tony Coulter:

In some ways this kind of pop culture cutup stuff goes back to Dickie Goodman as much as Negativland.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 2:33pm Tony Coulter:

Or, you know, Buchanan & Goodman.
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 2:35pm Tony Coulter:

As in this kind of thing from 1956: www.youtube.com...
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 2:39pm Rich in Washington:

That Tom's Diner bit reminds me of the supposed death of MP3s story that's been making the rounds.
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 2:40pm Rich in Washington:

Tammy Faye!
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 2:46pm Mayuko:

I need to leave now but thoroughly enjoyed the show. Your show is truly an oasis, Tony! Hope to tune in live again soon...
Avatar Tue. 5/23/17 2:47pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Mayuko! See you!!
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 2:48pm Rich in Washington:

I have that record that the 'bye bye', 'see you later' comes from. It's a bird training record, where, for some reason, the phrases bounce from one speaker to the other. Seems like that would make your poor parakeet really dizzy.
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 2:51pm V Priceless:

thanx, Tony! Great program!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/23/17 2:51pm JtotheK:

enjoyed the tapes today! thanks tony!
Avatar    Tue. 5/23/17 2:51pm Rich in Washington:

this is Negativland at their pinnacle. Side two of this album is my all time favorite collage piece. It's mind blowing.

Thanks, everyone! See you next week!
