I was working in a used record store when Prince died, and we couldn't keep ANYTHING in the store. We had a bunch of overstock copies of Emancipation which we couldn't previously get $8 in the store, which we soon realized could fetch up to $150 online. It was INSANITY.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am

my favorite Prince is the stuff that was never officially released; the outtakes and demos that Kurt and Matt (mostly) played last year on their tribute shows.

@Tim That's about what we probably could have gotten for it just before he died (sealed!). Afterward, we just kept bumping it by $5, thinking it couldn't possibly sell... and then it would sell within half an hour. I did the math, and we made a couple grand in Prince sales over the course of about a week.

@fred It's a somewhat ghoulish fact that notable deaths would usually cause a spike in sales, but Prince was on another level entirely. I think it's because even the most diehard fans would have gaps in their collections, given the MASSIVE amount of output. Still, the sales were really good for the store-- sort of a last gift :) The only drag was we didn't have any left to play in the store!

Angel of the morning sounds WRONG sung in the 3rd person by a man.

Saw him over here a couple of years ago with his old friend John Platania. He really could sing the telephone directory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am
listener monica:

Whoa. And he wrote it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am
fred:

@listener monica: but it's about right when dedicated to Michele before noon

I think I actually understood the song.

@Joe - I do so hope!

Larry Hosford. If you love country(-ish) rock, play some Larry Hosford.

Amoeba near me is losing about 1/3 of its footprint. Pot dispensary going in, I think.

KP:

Brian, i never went for that recording that much. his band was sort of lacking live, i thought.

D&D is the worst of EC

Duane is the reason they had one Great album.

@fred - and there's also Kurt Vonnegut: "We are here on Earth to fart around. Don't let anybody tell you any different."

The Oscar:

I'd actually be pretty okay with Eric Clapton if you excised everything recorded under his own name. Imagine a world where EC was just this legendary-but-obscure sideman.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:48am
Brian in UK:

@KP I cannot disagree, they were a pickup band so take that as a no.
Avatar 11:49am
Joe McG:

@TO: I just find him a bit boring on his own, bar a song here and there. But Derek and the Dominoes kills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am
coelacanth∅:

Clapton was good as long as there was an excellent musician there for him to compete with.
  11:51am
Dean:

Pretty much total agreement with @Joe McG up there @11:49. Some of the stuff with George Harrison works, too. D&D was a band that clicked. Something went right on that album. But I can understand folks tiring of an overplayed "Layla."

Great show

Clapton is a synonym for boring to me. I hate virtuosity, even in dance

THANK YOU MR JOE!!!

Joe McG:

@Dean: No doubt that "Layla" has been murdered by overplay. @fred: He's pretty dull when he's not lusting after his best friend's wife!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am
coelacanth∅:

i don't mind virtuosity if it's not for the sake of virtuosity. Clapton bores me because he's not creative. he just mimics.

Thanks for the show, Joe. Never know when it's gonna take an interesting turn, like the discussion ^ on Clapton. Never a dull moment, you're a prince.
Later, all.

Great sounds, Joe. African electric guitarists over any others.

Here's to the worker bees who dance well but without virtuosity. It's not about them, after all. It's about where the nectar is.
