Let's go.

It's the Easter zoo crew! Heya, @Andrew Waterloo & @Scraps! And @Stanley the man-ly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:02am doctorjazz:

Happy Happy all! I'm not quite risen yet, but present...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:06am Jeff Golick:

Hi there, @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:08am melinda:

hi everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:09am melinda:

I am risen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:09am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:09am melinda:

Hide Me in the Blood of Jesus sounds grisly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:11am doctorjazz:

Had the same thought... At least messy. Love that old gospel with slide guitar, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:11am Scraps:

A couple days ago I received my new Microscopic Septet cd! Yeah! Along with it I got a Joel Forrester Trio and Phillip Johnston film score cd that I didn't have (it was a Kickstarter, the second time I done a Micro Kickstarter thing. I like Kickstarter muchly!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:12am Jeff Golick:

It does, though the message -- hide me in safety until trouble passes -- still resonates. We may all want/need to be hidden/protected by something, even if not...blood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:12am Jeff Golick:

Well done, @Scraps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:16am doctorjazz:

Hey, @Scraps, got the same Kickstarter! I got Joel Forrester and the Truth, Furtive Sex (which I really like( and Phillip Johnston's Page of Madness, which I haven't heard yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:16am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hullo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:17am doctorjazz:

(and of course the "...Play the Blues" CD, which I've taken to playing a lot, and really love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:19am Scraps:

I now heard Page of Madness twice. Really good. It is a film score, but nice, all of it really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:19am Uncle Michael:

Will I become the first person ever to clay-bar a car to D:O? I'm going with "yes".
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:19am doctorjazz:

Friday night got to hear a ne Dave Douglas band, Dada People, in Philly, who were really great, and got their CD at the show. Douglas always puts together music/bands with interesting concepts, this one a tribute to Man Ray (not terribly well attended show, though, sad...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:21am Scraps:

Whew! Lie down now for a while, listening... cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:22am Jeff Golick:

Hello to you, @Revolution Rabbit Nov63!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:23am melinda:

@Jeff agree that message resonates. I tuned in after the fact and missed the actual song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:23am Jeff Golick:

I had to google clay-bar, @UM. I would also agree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:24am Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: thanks for the show report. I've had that Dada People record for a little while; haven't quite connected with it yet. Seeing the band in person always helps a lot....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:25am Andrew Waterloo:

Last Sunday I saw Xylouris White a small venue. Dave Douglas has always been on my must see list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:27am doctorjazz:

Haven't played the cd yet (got it at the show), but at the show the music was fine. Douglas is such a presence and a player! It may not transfer over to the recorded version, I'll check it out soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:28am Dave in Vermont:

Greetings. Is this the bus to Out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:29am doctorjazz:

I had to Google Xylouris White and clay-bar, didn't know about either. Don't think Clay-bar is in my future, though Xylouris White sounds interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:30am Jeff Golick:

@Dave in Vermont: it is! Grab a brown bag and hop on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:33am Dave in Vermont:

I went in to Shangri-La with Mayuko yesterday, and haven't been able to get back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:34am Jeff Golick:

Re seeing live music, I'm not sure which is more difficult: living in a place off of the main stem, making it hard to catch certain acts live; or living in, e.g., NYC, and missing everything that does come to town, and feeling semi-constant regret.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:34am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, that was quite a trip, @Dave. Though I had to cut out early...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:34am Uncle Michael:

Detained by border agents, Dave?
Avatar    Sun. 4/16/17 9:35am duke:

Are we out yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:36am Jeff Golick:

@duke! To paraphrase Bob: it's not out yet, but it's getting there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:39am Dave in Vermont:

No, UM just lost track of time wandering around without anxiety and regret.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:42am doctorjazz:

Know the feeling, Jeff. Read the Friday Times weekend listings and other jazz around town listings, and tell my wife I'm checking out everything I'm missing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:43am melinda:

78 is today's high here, which seems too hot for April. But then it's supposed to get cold again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:45am melinda:

I think I prefer living in a town that gets some good musical acts but not everything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:46am doctorjazz:

(but it's SO MUCH EASIER to get to what you want to see in Philly-had to drive an hour and a half, but then parked RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER FROM THE VENUE-PAINTED BRIDE-IN 5 MINUTES. And, while the show wasn't dirt cheap, came to much less than most Manhattan outings in the end...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:47am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, I get that, @melinda. More of a sense of occasion, perhaps, when someone you dig comes to town. You're in one of the Carolinas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:51am melinda:

I'm in Portland, Maine. I've noticed that North Carolina gets some acts I wish would come here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:51am Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: have done the Philadelphia-for-music run, but not in a long while. Indeed, many things are easier when you leave NYC & environs. Parking, to name one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:53am doctorjazz:

The Minute the horns came in, I know it was Dollar Brand/Abdullah Ibrahim (of course, I have this, but haven't heard it in a long time).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:54am Jeff Golick:

Ah, Vacationland! That would explain the "get colder again" bit. Maine in summer = wonderful. Maine in winter...less so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 9:55am doctorjazz:

He's playing with Hugh Masekela, the Jazz Epistles, at Town Hall, soon, but it's a day that doesn't work for me, darn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 9:58am Jeff Golick:

This large band line-up is completely bananas: Hamiet Bluiett, baritone saxophone; Sonny Fortune & Carlos Ward, flute & alto saxophone; Roland Alexander, harmonium & tenor saxophone; John Stubblefield, tenor saxophone; Kiani Zawadi, trombone; Cecil Bridgewater, Charles Sullivan, & Enrico Rava, trumpets; Cecil McBee, bass; Roy Brooks, percussion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 10:00am doctorjazz:

(from when Dollar Brand thought he was a free jazz player...though even then, the compositions tended to sound South Africa/folksy.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 10:00am Jeff Golick:

I think we've reached cruising altitude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 10:01am melinda:

I think I would be ok with winter if I didn't have to deal with snow removal (and for much of my time up here in the north I didn't). I like all seasons in the right proportions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 10:02am doctorjazz:

Quite a line up indeed-Carlos Ward would stay with him for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 10:02am Jeff Golick:

I'm right there with you, @melinda. Wouldn't want to be without seasons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 10:05am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Winter is just plain too damn long up here in NorthNewEngland. ByGawd - we earn our damned Spring. Thing is - the NewNormal is two seasons - not four...
Love this piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 10:07am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...too long, too cold, too grey & too icy & too slushy...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 10:10am Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff and what airline would you be flying with today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 10:11am Jeff Golick:

How do, @Brian in UK! We are flying the friendly skies of the African Space Program.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 10:12am Jeff Golick:

My big problem with winter nowadays is the darkness. Dark when I get up; dark again by late afternoon. In other words, I curse the darkness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 10:15am doctorjazz:

I always loved the music on those old Dollar Brand recordings, the recordings/sound quality, not so much...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 10:16am doctorjazz:

This icp orchestra is a great follow up...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 10:18am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @doc, I wasn't sure if that compression was due to my bad rip (I have the CD around here somewhere); bad CD transfer; or bad original recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 10:21am doctorjazz:

I think it is the original recording, I have it in vinyl from the original issue, and it sounded that way to me right when I bought it (and I wasn't much concerned with audio/sound quality back then)
  Sun. 4/16/17 10:21am slawooy:

In 'Arctic dreams' a book by Barry Lopez there are stories on Northern Passage early explorers and their madness caused by 4-6 months of darkness and also being stuck in ice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 10:23am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @slawooy! Yeah, that sounds about right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 10:23am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 10:26am Jeff Golick:

There's a Beryl Bainbridge novel about Scott's arctic expedition that carries some of that same vibe.
Avatar Sun. 4/16/17 10:28am glenn:

one thing about winter - there are fewer assholes in places that get it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 10:36am Jeff Golick:

So assholes gravitate to warm weather?
Avatar Sun. 4/16/17 10:37am glenn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 10:39am Jeff Golick:

  Sun. 4/16/17 11:14am Dean:

Picked up a disk yesterday featuring Greg Bendian with the Cline twins and Dresser, a tribute of sorts to Gentle Giant, no kidding. The star of the show, at least upon first listening: Alex Cline.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 11:14am Jeff Golick:

Yeah. Funny, though, as I would think only those interested in the record would bother to mess with the discogs tagging.

Oh, you know what? It's probably a reference to the interviews that come with this CD release. We can downgrade our eye rolls to raised eyebrows, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 11:16am Scraps:

Ah, you're right

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 11:20am Jeff Golick:

I bought this Braxton via the Leo site, as a download. It was not easy sledding. And they remain the only ogg vorbis format files I own.
  Sun. 4/16/17 11:25am Dean:

I have the London companion on Leo. Problem is, whenever I see it or Coventry in the used bins, I forget which one I need.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 11:27am Jeff Golick:

I can relate to that.
  Sun. 4/16/17 11:29am Dean:

Same goes for recordings of Charpentier's "Leçons de ténèbres." Hat hut complicates the problem with their reissues featuring different covers, never mind the house style that renders every cover very similar to others from the same era.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 11:38am Scraps:

Dean: not to mention HatHut's tendency to not give some of their reissues complete. I like HatHut very much, but that I frown upon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 11:38am Jeff Golick:

@Dean: hat Hut (Hat Hut? hat hut? - a proofreader's nightmare) does NOT make it easy, nossir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 11:39am Stanley:

Digging still
  Sun. 4/16/17 11:40am Dean:

I'm aware of the Sun Ra reissue of "Sunrise in Different Dimensions," which drops one track from the 2-LP set due to the limitations of CD capacity. There are others?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 11:42am Jeff Golick:

The hat Steve Lacy permutations are pretty difficult to follow (as per usual).
  Sun. 4/16/17 11:43am Dean:

Also, had one of the original releases of Tapscott's "Dark Tree," could never find the companion volume, so I ended up getting the 2-CD reissue. And then there's Myra Melford's "Live in the House of Saints," the first issue of which I acquired early on. Then appears a reissue with extra tracks, so I had to get that, too!

The Lacy discography...yeah, a bear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 11:44am Scraps:

Dean, yes. (And Sunrise is missing three tracks.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/16/17 11:44am Brian in UK:

  Sun. 4/16/17 11:45am Dean:

If those were the only three Sun Ra tracks I was missing, I'd make a bold effort to get the LPs. (Probably find them at Groove Yard.) As things stand, they're not a priority.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/16/17 11:46am Scraps:
