OMG Sheila, just seen the photo on Twitter of you holding a tarantula. Was that some sort of therapy thingy? Our friend Tim is a etymologist and goes off to the jungles of Borneo to collect specimens. He was on TV doing a programme called Spider House, in which he filled a whole house with spiders, and the presenter had to spend the night there, in the name of science.

Spiders are awesome.
  3:22pm
Cliff (temporarily not) in Prague:

From Ken's link - "While Cacachilensis is pretty good sized, it’s nowhere near the world's largest by leg span, Heteropoda maxima, the giant huntsman spider which lives in Laos. Its legs can grow as large as 1 foot and it also stands accused of spinning webs out of nightmares and feasting on children’s dreams."

Everyone hear about the United passenger bitten by a scorpion in the overhead compartment? A huge spider on the flight could have helped.

Boy, that's a really nice bathtub.
  3:30pm
JakeGould:

A few snakes on that plane might have helped as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm
NotARealDoctor:

Don't scorpions eat spiders? I think it probably went something like this: Too many bugs on the United plane so they got some spiders, then everyone complained about the spiders so they got scorpions, if the passengers would've left the scorpions alone they were going to send in snakes to clean them up for the next flight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for the pic, Adrian. I like tossing flies into webs and watch the spider come running out for the feast. Also, tossing grasshoppers into water and waiting for fish to nab them.

Instead they kicked off a Vietnamese doctor who said the experience was worse than the fall of Saigon.

@JakeGould: That right there is the fatal flow in how United handled this: they should have started playing a Seven Second Delay episode in the plane, and announced that was the only thing available for the duration of the flight

When my wife was pregnant 4 years ago, there was a BIG spider that built a web in our window. It freaked her out, so she had me knock it down...we were on the third floor. Afterwards, we really regretted it and said prayers of sorrow and asked the spider for forgiveness. Spiders still give us the heebie jeebies, but we try to be more hospitable to their right to a home.

@Rob: Well, there's Bas who's a HUGE supporter of the station, and Ajay who's always insightful. Maybe I was referring to quality more than quantity. I'm sure I'm also forgetting and slighting a few others
