A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Several years ago a bat got into my apartment. My roommate and I locked ourselves in his room and called animal control (at 2 in the morning, mind you). An officer showed up with his high-tech removal device... a Dunkin Donuts cup. By that point we couldn't find the bat, so we just left the window open and went to bed. So sometimes they'll COME, but they won't necessarily CARE.

@Annie: mostly, it's about how a man needed seven years of breaking in and civilizing before he's worth the attentions of a lady. I enjoyed it. Some good moments such as:

"'I will undergo them if necessary,' rejoined the abbe, with an imperceptible smile of pride, and such a dignified bearing that all the women [in the courtroom] were touched.

Women are excellent judges of things that are delicately beautiful."

@Brian It was admittedly probably silly, but it was a small enough apartment and enough of a surprise that we weren't thinking quite straight. We used to get bats in my house all the time as a kid, but our ceilings were high enough that we could comfortably guide them out with a pool skimmer.
