The fine falsetto of Eddie K. - wonderful way to start!

Hello Duane Train fam..welcome aboard!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/12/17 12:03pm JtotheK:

hi Duane, hi fellow trainers! Happy to be aboard today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/12/17 12:05pm Michael 98145:

Yay, Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock (born April 12, 1940)
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 12:06pm Cecile:

Do you think by this point Herbie has nodded enough to trad jazz to be forgiven by his harshest critics for going in a pop direction in the 70s and 80s?
Avatar    Wed. 4/12/17 12:08pm Polyus:

Weird timing, I just listened to a podcast interview with Mike Clark earlier this morning, who played drums on Thrust, Flood, and Man-child.
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 12:08pm Jshatan:

@Cecile I think many of those "harsh critics" probably ate their words eventually...love it or hate it (and I go both ways with Herbie), he's more than earned the right to do whatever.
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 12:09pm Duane:

Cecile: You know..I don't think he actually realle cared that much, but yeah, at this point people like him and Patrice Rushen made those arguments moot..literally 20 or more years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/12/17 12:10pm JtotheK:

@Cecile - I sure hope so. Herbie's got jams spanning multiple decades. And from a variety of music, even within the 'jazz' umbrella.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/12/17 12:11pm JtotheK:

I'll have to give Fat Albert Rotunda a spin, been a while. And Crossings. And the great track 'Bring Down The Birds' (which Dee Lite sampled in a great way).
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 12:14pm still b/p:

"Herbie Hancock, BEST KNOWN for Rockit..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/12/17 12:14pm KRYPT:

Hiya Duane, I love this Herbie track and I also love the wonderfully cheesy Sexosonique housey rework of "I thought it was you" from the mid 90s, guilty plesh ;)
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 12:16pm Passaic River Blues:

@Cecile: I don't know but I hope so. Criticism that centers on the music a musician *should* be making rather than the music itself is generally axe-grinding puffery that's best ignored. Of course, I make this kind of critique all the time, so never listen to me.
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 12:16pm Duane:

Krypt: It's a fave of mine too..I actually first heard it in a club scene in the Jackie Collins Sexploitation flick "The Bitch" :)

Just boarding the train. Morning everyone!
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 12:16pm Jshatan:

@Polyus - any link for the Mike Clark interview?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 4/12/17 12:18pm Mark the Sardine:

Amazing HH track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/12/17 12:18pm KRYPT:

@Duane, forgot about "the Bitch" daaaaang!
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 12:23pm Cecile:

I know that Stereo Review in the 70s about had a damn stroke when he started using electric keyboards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/12/17 12:24pm Michael 98145:

nice, this

Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 12:30pm Jshatan:

Cheers, @polyus!!
Avatar    Wed. 4/12/17 12:33pm Polyus:

It's a pretty wonderful podcast overall. Joe Wong interviews drummers from all across the musical spectrum and stays away from all the boring "what size sticks do you use" questions. A lot more about musical and life experiences, philosophy, etc.
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 12:35pm Jshatan:

@Cecile Herbie's first foray into electric keys came on Stuff in 1968 - and even he was resistant! Miles insisted because he was starting to get into Hendrix and Sly thanks to Ms. Mabry (AKA Betty Davis) and knew that he needed to plug in to get to where they were. Herbie had to go along to get along...
  Wed. 4/12/17 12:35pm joeray:

I never realized how much Someday My Prince Will Come sounds like a Fred Rogers Song.
  Wed. 4/12/17 12:42pm Asparagus:

Honoring the man properly Duane!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/12/17 12:44pm blee:

wheeeew. so glad it's Herbie's birthday. I just got really worried that he too had passed from our big rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/12/17 12:45pm blee:

Happy Birthday, please keep jamming.
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 12:46pm Passaic River Blues:

Man, this part is wild.

Avatar    Wed. 4/12/17 12:49pm Wild Neil:

Peace all. Head Hunter is one of "Ten Jazz Albums to Hear Before You Die" per the Village Voice...it is awesome!
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 12:50pm Cecile:

Yeah, I think if Herbie was doing really shitty pop stuff, perhaps the criticism would be warranted, but he made some world-class funk albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/12/17 12:54pm blee:

I got the Magic Number / Everybody's Broke 12" at a thrift store recently. I really dig the percussion on those tracks. bongos and congas at war w each other.
Avatar    Wed. 4/12/17 1:02pm Polyus:

Still with us and keeps up quite a busy schedule for a 77-year old, from what I can see.
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 1:05pm Jshatan:

Direcstep is on Spotify - so that's something!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/12/17 1:07pm JtotheK:

Thanks for the Herbie set, Duane - enjoyed it!
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 1:08pm Passaic River Blues:

That was a really judicious selection of HH, Duane. I'll probably revisit like I did the other day with the Billy Paul/Prince show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/12/17 1:09pm Dren Nilso:

Thanks thanks thanks!!!! I have been putting off diving into Herbie Hancock for so many years (aside from Maiden Voyage)- waiting for the right time. But now I realize just how dumb I was for waiting. Can't wait to explore further! Feeling great! Thanks!
Avatar    Wed. 4/12/17 1:14pm Bronwyn Bishop:

WHAT did i seriously miss a mashup of one of my all time faves from the beach boys :(
  Wed. 4/12/17 1:15pm Michael:

Whatever that last song was was tight.
  Wed. 4/12/17 1:15pm PJ:

Duane, Where did you find this Beach Boys remix/mashup? (Holland is one of my favorite BB albums)
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 1:16pm Alejandroool:

Only caught the last of that set =/ will have to revisit! Duane Train..bringing some sunshine to the grey day.
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 1:17pm Duane:

Psychemagik are great producers and they did this Beach Boys remix. There library is a google search away:_)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/12/17 1:18pm JtotheK:

  Wed. 4/12/17 1:21pm FRED:

Oh, man. Sounds great from back here in the observation car, Duane. Hello to you, and all Trainiacs.
  Wed. 4/12/17 1:24pm Frankie:

I saw Herbie in the 70's but one show also had Weather Report and Jaco was with them then. H.B. Herbie you the best.
Avatar Wed. 4/12/17 1:34pm Cecile:
