Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:04pm coelacanth∅:

Daniel - i figure first the kind of music he makes has to be accepted by a large % of the population; then become obsolete (as it will be replaced by robots composing and playing extremely simple tunes with sounds that manipulate people's minds in very specific ways...) at which time drone-noise & such will be considered "the classics"... regarded highly but mostly listened to only by old folks and musicologists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:05pm Fox (Rā-chul):

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:06pm steve:

how sweet would a UFO with antlers be
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:07pm northguineahills:

Gotta run, will be back later.

A UFO w/ antlers wouldn't be too aerodynamic, but, that would be moot for most interstellar traffic.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:18pm Fox (Rā-chul):

People say "everyone can draw" but they don't say "everyone can sing".

Some people are tone deaf. Some people are such bad artists that they don't understand what good is, and so they have no concept of how bad they are, and end up possessing a confidence that I deeply envy.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:20pm geezerette:

U.F.O.s look like obsessively trimmed fried eggs. Sunny side up.

i agree with Fox
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:21pm Fox (Rā-chul):

I have been going on some spring shopping sprees at the local Good Will. I bought a brand new ConAir magnifying mirror that's supposed to light up, but didn't work. I unscrewed the switch to find that the wire was cut through without letting the copper run through like it's supposed to. Goddamn I love GoodWill.
  Fri. 2/24/17 10:21pm spodiodi:

i agree with geezerette
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:21pm Daniel Blumin:

el Garree~ & Eric Hat, thanks yous!!!
  Fri. 2/24/17 10:23pm el Garree~:

Art like sonics and music is relative to who's looking or listening. Or doing it. And quite experiential. Subjective.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:23pm steve:

way to go fox... did you have to solder the wire back together or something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:23pm Fox (Rā-chul):

I had a serious fear of UFOs and grey aliens starting in late childhood through to adulthood. Like, serious terror. I read Whitley Striber's Communion when I was like, 12, and it fucked me up. I'd freak out. I thought I was abducted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:26pm Fox (Rā-chul):

Nah, you don't have to solder it, you can just twist the copper together and coat it in electrical tape. it's all going to be inside the switch anyway.
  Fri. 2/24/17 10:27pm el Garree~:

I used to listen to Whitley on the radio, years ago. But I jagged on literary sci-fi-ness when no one knew who Phillip Dick was. Nothing freaks me anymore. Well, except the present...
  Fri. 2/24/17 10:29pm el Garree~:

That liquid plastic tape is great! Five stars.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:31pm bollocks:

lol, sounds like my auntie is on this track
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:31pm Fox (Rā-chul):

Between 6th and 7th grades, I think, my Dad gave me some books to read. Some early Stephen King (Carrie, I think), Ubik by PKD, and How to Talk Dirty and Influence People by Lenny Bruce. That was a summer my brain exploded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:37pm Scraps:

Fox: I agree, even though it might be a good idea to say "everyone can draw", it's not true for strictly everybody. I can't draw, and I learned in college just how much I can't draw (to one of my teachers, who finally gave up on me, noting it wasn't lack of effort that bedeviled me). Now of course I can't use my right (good) hand, and my left is as good as my right hand used to be (i.e., bad).
  Fri. 2/24/17 10:38pm el Garree~:

Ubik is a mind eff... In those days Lenny B was reviled as porn... Go finger. But then so were Redd Foxx discs... We listened in secret. Don't tell anyone!
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:38pm geezerette:

Fox, an artist I knew made a calendar every year of photos he'd shot of u.f.o.s he'd seen the previous year. I could never get him to admit it was a joke, never got him to laugh. It was LA, which is technically the southwest & he might have known old special effects people, but...?
  Fri. 2/24/17 10:42pm el Garree~:

Geez- I'd love one of those calendars!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:43pm Scraps:

One of my friends thought Ubik was hilarious, just tracking the clothes Dick solemnly described the characters wearing. When I reread Ubik, I saw what she meant; that humor went right by me the first time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:43pm melinda:

Most people can draw and sing, it's a matter of how well. I was once going on about how I couldn't sing, and a friend who does sing well said that it's all practice and how interested you are in practicing. Which I don't completely agree with, some people do have natural talent and others have to work at it. But I appreciate that there is often more effort behind both drawing and singing (and instrument playing) than people realize. I can draw well, but I also draw terribly if I'm out of shape or don't have focus.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:43pm geezerette:

They were so funny, Very convincing, and in color!
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:44pm still b/p:

The calendar could have abduction dates/anniversaries on it, like Catholic feast days.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:45pm geezerette:

Hahaha! GREAT idea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:46pm Fox (Rā-chul):

Geezerette: I swear, that's the kind of shit that would give me a panic attack. Like, even though I know most of it is bunk, it's so instilled in me. If I saw something like a UFO in the sky, I'd turn into a maniac.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:46pm northguineahills:

The problem w/ most vocals in out musical culture, is that they are based on pitch specific dynamics, and are utilized to convey a lingual story. However, if non-melodic vocals are needed, and a cloud of pitches based around certain 'pitches' are encouraged, then, anyone can perform vocals.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:46pm northguineahills:

Åke Hodell !
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:47pm Scraps:

When I close my eyes, I can't see what I was looking at a minute before. Literally. I have almost no visual memory.

Fortunately, I have staggeringly good auditory memory, which is a good writer's tool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:48pm Scraps:

(At least, I had a good auditory memory, before my stroke. It comes and goes, now.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:48pm Fox (Rā-chul):

Scraps: You are making me want to go back and re-read it. I don't think I've read it since my youth. There's a lot of dated bits in his books, but I don't mind. (And holy crap, the adaptation of A Scanner Darkly was perfectly cast.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:48pm melinda:

There is a book about Area 51 that I want to read.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:48pm coelacanth∅:

i like that it started with "volvo". (which means "we roll")
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:50pm geezerette:

Melinda, totally agree about effort. Kind of need to do it every day to be confident & fluid. The best artists I know work all the time;although occaisionally there's someone like Chet Baker who was said never to have practiced. Not sure I believe that.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:51pm geezerette:

This is hilarious.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:51pm still b/p:

There are a few emphatic lines related to writers LISTENING on this page

..I was trying to look up the quote about writing a million words to become a writer, in relation to diligent practicing, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:52pm steve:

never heard Hodell before... this is some wild stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:53pm Scraps:

A Scanner Darkly is my favorite Dick book. Dark, dark, dark. There was a time when Cronenberg has the film rights, which made me ecstatic. Of course it didn't happen
  Fri. 2/24/17 10:53pm el Garree~:

I have five streams of thought going on here... and then Daniel's sonic backdrop. B/P's point is well appreciated. I mean, like who appoints those dates anyway. Is that a job title or something? About drawing/singing... as mentioned it's all relative... I love both realistic Dutch and primitive. I have a bunch of kitsch and primitive work. My doxie was just barking at the Daniel's music. But really, a lot of people would hate this program as well. My doggie
Samson and I like it though.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 10:54pm geezerette:

Scraps, your writing is really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:54pm Fox (Rā-chul):

Scraps: My right side has been slowly crapping out for the past 20 years. It's not something anyone would notice aside from some clumsiness, but my fine tuned motor skills are crap in both my hands, my right side worst and often in numb pain. I've been trying to train my left hand to draw. it's tedious and annoying. Painting is easier than drawing. Shapes of color are easier to wrangle than rendering lines, I've found.

I can do pretty well if I've got reference, but I cannot draw anything out of my head. I'm pretty sure it's just how my mind works. My mother is the same way, to an insane degree. I asked my mother to draw me a chicken for reference when I was in grade school, and she drew it with four legs and ears like a cat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:55pm Daniel Blumin:

el Garree~, anyone hating this program would clearly be an enemy of the people and beyond! All hail, Samson, a fine pup!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:56pm Fox (Rā-chul):

Melinda - it is definitely a combination of skill and effort, and it becomes offensive often when people assume that artistic accomplishment is like being born tall. There's a certain aptitude one is born with, sure, but there's hours, weeks, years, of practice involved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:57pm Scraps:

Thank you, geezerette! Sometimes I mourn about how easy some of it was, especially humor, whereas now it's hard. But I still have the sense of what is excellent and what it not.... anyway, thank you.
  Fri. 2/24/17 10:58pm el Garree~:

northguineahills- Yes, yes! That is so really spot on. Microtonal and atonal sounds are quite the norm. No auto-tune there. Ear and brain adjust... But The show must go on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 10:59pm Scraps:

Fox: I really get it.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 11:01pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 11:02pm steve:

  Fri. 2/24/17 11:02pm el Garree~:

So R people just born tall? Samson is torquing his head. But dimensionally I'm a tall person but well, you know. GD this is a great program...
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 11:03pm northguineahills:

el Garree~: And the human voice is very personally visceral (for both the actor and the listener), so it's very intimidating for most. Heck, even I have to get myself into a state of non-self-awareness to use vocals in any context.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 11:03pm steve:

northguineahills- In some places music and voice are just natural. The US is kind of hung up about that... and, well other stuff. But it sounds like you dig singing. I do and the more sung the better it gets. And we feel great too, correct? Now a mic break into the "ecstasy of death". On a station where "dead air" is a good thing. Huh?

I miss having a daily, 45 minute, subway commute. I read so much when I took the subway every day.

I saw that!

I completely understand, steve. No apology req'd whatsoever.

The Great Patriotic War is everywhere physically and ephemerally in Russia.
  Fri. 2/24/17 11:18pm Dean:

My reading these days is a function of 20 minute bus rides. Another benefit of public transportation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 11:19pm Fox (Rā-chul):

Holy shit. That's some crazy-ass news.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 11:19pm northguineahills:

@Dean: Now that I moved from NYC to FL, I miss my reading on my commute.

Jeez... Just think Das Boot... but more spartan. But that would be Greek or something.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 11:21pm JakeGould:

Daniel! Just finished watching “The Great Escape.” Nothing like those old-school 1950s/1960s World War II action films.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/24/17 11:22pm Fox (Rā-chul):

That's as insane as Kim Jong Nam being killed by a neuro toxin that's considered a weapon of mass destruction, from a cloth placed over his face in the middle of a busy airport. All the weird spy shit I thought was over with is totally hip again!
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 11:24pm northguineahills:

Damn it, I won tix two weeks ago (which I gave to my wife to record the Necks for me).
  Fri. 2/24/17 11:24pm el Garree~:

northguineahills- Really in Fla? I'm sort of "cemented" in the Tampa Bay area at the moment. Always been weird. More like Area 51. Strange place.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 11:26pm coelacanth∅:

crap. i've been trying to figure out how i can volunteer during the marathon...i couldn't commit myself to seeing sunn o))) - as much as i'd love to.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 11:26pm northguineahills:

I grew up in FL, went to grad school in NYC, and stayed for 16 years. came down here for a job, but they down-sized a few months after getting here. My wife is still in NYC, but there are more employment opportunities here, and the income/cost-of-living-living ratio is much more favorable to NYC. Just applied to a Tampa job yesterday. Been spending my time b/tn J-ville, G-ville, and O-town the last few months.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 11:27pm northguineahills:

Love this Pram, and old fave.

Easy, easy Fox. We all like "interesting" dreams but not with organ- phosphate toxins... You'll do just fine!
  Fri. 2/24/17 11:34pm el Garree~:

northguineahills- Re:Fla... it depends. This is a very hectic place without much of the culture and community. The gov here is nuts... Ok, not to my liking. You may like St. Pete, west of Tpa. Check it out!
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 11:37pm northguineahills:

Gainesville and Orlando are ok, but you have to know people to know what's going on, and the people I do know are to busy w/ their little kids. Jacksonville, on the other hand, is a cultural desert and full of die partei von Trumpenfuhrer.
  Fri. 2/24/17 11:38pm Dean:

Loved a trip to Tampa many years ago. Bern's and all. Haven't been back.

Been loving the direction L.I.E.S. has been doing lately transmorgifying the dancefloor for more curious aural abodes. Glad to see the Bunker is still hosting their artists.

Try St. Pete... really nice and great people. Keroauc and Fred Neil (songwriter) and others are from here. Now there's spring training baseball... I think Wikipedia started here... We need you!

I've only been to St Pete for the Dali museum and a few shows in college. It's been almost 17 years since I've been there.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 11:47pm northguineahills:

Fred Neil is a fave of mine, he wrote, "everyone's talking"

I saw Matmos in small bar in Ybor City in '98 for $5. It was weird as Ybor was already frat bro bar central by then. I got Drew and Daniel to give me some cassettes and cdrs.
Avatar Fri. 2/24/17 11:50pm northguineahills:

Ok, haven't heard this Los Ninos Del Parque remix. I assuming sources from the original liaisons dangereuses track.

One time, I was in Florida and drove across the state to see the Dali museum. Small world.
Thanks DJ DB. Have a good weekend.
