I can't remember the last time I really cranked the home stereo

hyde, how nowhere is your nowheresville? Can you beat my isolated town of ca. 2000 people?
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
melinda:

My home stereo has been blinky for years, one of my resolutions is to get a new receiver and set up my turntable. I know hardly anything about stereo systems so I have put it off.
Avatar 10:28pm
hyde:

@LD ha, no. my Nowheresville for now is Woodstock. NY. which though i have no totally closeby neighbors, is still the overcrowded Northeast ;)

Thanks hyde, I don't know why I got weirdly competitive about nowhere towns. Woodstock is in a beautiful area either way

Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm

Marathon is tiny, yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Little Danny:

Oh, Kris lives in Marathon which is incredibly small and isolated. Though weirdly close (60 miles) to me here in Marfa. I think Marathon has a population of like 400 or so people
Avatar 10:43pm
Scraps:

Ah! Thanks

I lived in a town of 500 or so in VT. It was an interesting experience of community but I'm glad I no longer live there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Little Danny:

Melinda, I bet! The daily social life of small towns is so pressurized
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Dano59:

top of the set has been groovy so far ... soundtracking: night in the city, a train clacking past, zoom in on two lovers on the platform, and musicians off in a corner, before parting ways after a gig, breaking out their instruments and busking. And the next train comes ...
  10:48pm
MrFab:

Small towns? But...what about record stores?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Dano59:

greater woofstock must have record stores.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Little Danny:

Hi Dano59! Love that visualization. Funny, trains seem to work their way into a lot of my escapist reveries
Avatar 10:50pm
Scraps:

I'm a very very city boy. I hate living even in a suburb, let alone a far out suburb. New York would be perfect, if I could afford to live there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Dano59:

don't ask what happens next. i was just making pictures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Doug Schulkind:

Never heard this gem before. Yowza!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Little Danny:

Hi MrFab! It's pretty bleak here, though the aforementioned Kris Holmes recently scored in a big way in one of the shittiest record stores on the planet in nearby Alpine
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
melinda:

Small town life means online shopping. And a lot of driving to bigger towns. I had visions of being closer to nature, which was a positive feature of being small town/rural, but having to drive a lot seems anti-nature.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Little Danny:

Hi Doug, it brings me pleasure to have played that for you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Dano59:

the only city things I crave are culture, and anonymity. a small college city affords me much of the former, but not enough of the latter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm

@melinda, exactly!
Avatar 10:53pm

Avatar 10:54pm

Yeah, melinda, and I don't drive (and can't drive now)
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
melinda:

I think small college cities are about my speed. I had childhood dreams of living in NYC but after several years in a college town of about 60,000 I realized it suited me well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Dano59:

I'm not sure of my current village's population, but Ithaca where I work is over 30K year-round, maybe 55K when schools are in session.

Love that Gerald Wilson track Danny, there was a fantastic interview with him on Marfra KRTS a couple of years ago, too bad not archived, The Jazz show Wednesday night 8 to 9 m, west Texas Jazz. Oh, and LA county's population is around 10 million. Last time I counted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Dano59:

ithaca is pretty full of itself. but yes, @melinda, gorges, as they say. big city stuff creeping in, hotels, high cost of living, too much traffic... the tradeoff for all the pluses. One of the best local music scenes in the country, is the big one for me.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Dano59:

Danny, you being in Marfa was a surprise for me! I've seen a lotta small Texas towns ... Edam was a good one.
Texas is a good cross-cultural melting pot, if only geographically ... Tex-Mex wouldn't exist without German immigrants bringing accordions...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm

Thanks Pete, that'd be so awesome

MrFab:

Had no idea Gerald Wilson had an (inter)national rep. i think of him as a "local" - on staff at UCLA I think? Appearing at local festivals, etc.
  11:26pm
Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

See what I can do, was a nice interviw, didnt catch the start, but pretty sure I got most of it,will try to find it latter if its still on the HD
  11:29pm
Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

MrFab: He had a long arranging career and sessions etc, married a Mexican woman and think may have lived in Mexico for a while, also fed his Latin, and Mexican cultural intrests, made some very nice records

Gerald Wilson taught an Introduction to Jazz class for years in LA. You had to be punctual and then listen...to the great Jazz bands, solo performers, small groups, everything that LA was rich in. Pretty great. I think he gave everyone an A. He was developing the future audience as well as exposing young musicians to possible mentors, good work habits, etc.

...'reminds me too, Danny i listened to quite a lot of Pee Wee Crayton since last week and loved every second. i recognised a few of the songs too...i had him stored in my brain as "pee wee clayton".
- not much of his stuff is like Mose, after all. ...more standard bluesish - which is fine with me.
