Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

![]() |
![]() Haven't noticed much from Byron recently (likely just me), was really into his stuff for quite a while |
![]() |
![]() I was very optimistic about, and then disappointed by, a recent Byron/gospel-inspired album. His early stuff is awesome, though. |

![]() Just got here, OK! |
![]() |
![]() Jeff - for what it's worth, I saw him do "Superstition" to close his set when he opened for John Lennon in NYC in the early 70s. It knocked me out. 'Course, I was, like, 16, but I think it's available on Youtube. Great moment where he does his walk-off and takes his bows while the band vamps the outro. |

![]() |
![]() I think someone needs to give Maceo a hug. |
![]() |
![]() Annie, yes, that's what happens. If you want to come back to where the current feed is, refresh the pop-up. |

![]() I keep waiting for this Maceo to turn into "It's A Man's Man's Man's World". (Not sure if I have the correct number of "Man's" there.) |
![]() |
![]() My FMU app on my phone has a pause and a stop button (the square)...I always use the square, hate being suspended in time @dean-not sure what v1 set you have, I happen to have the first Sun Ra The Singles CD set in the office, 1996 on Evidence, different track list. , www.discogs.com... |
![]() |
![]() There may be overlap, laid out differently on the CD box. |
![]() |
![]() thanks parq!! |
Fri. 1/13/17 1:04pm
Dean:
Strut recently did a 3CD set of singles, 1952-1961. The set list is identical to the 65 tune list at the URL you provided. Maybe the v.2 list is incorrect. The notes to v.1 make reference to the incomplete Evidence set. Something like a dozen new tracks on Strut.
![]() |
![]() Looking it over, much is repeated, some is not. They note that some have been turned up recently (the box I have was released 20 years ago). |
![]() |

Dang I missed Glam Metal Detectives!
Fri. 1/13/17 1:28pm
Dean:
Bandcamp is confusing matters by hosting two pages, one for a putative v.1, the other for v.2, but both refer to the full collection. What I don't recall is whether the 3CD set I just acquired specifies a date range on the cover as shown on Bandcamp.

![]() |
![]() No, Brian. What's the story? |
Fri. 1/13/17 1:31pm
Dean:
Irwin replies, "What’s called Vol 2 at the link is vol. 1 and vol. 2 combined." There I see, too, a scope note: "November 25th 2016: - all-encompassing 3CD and digital versions covering Ra’s full output from 1952-1991" Thus, my 3CD set is "all-encompassing."
![]() |
![]() I suspect, @Dean, that the volume split concerns the vinyl editions, as in the photos, even as the bandcamp page(s) list all tunes. It allows the label to have multiple products on one page. |
![]() |
![]() You know who else cover's that Fred Neil tune? Louis Armstrong. |

![]() As John notes, there were discos before there was disco, which probably explains why early news stories about Studio and its ilk referred to "rock music" being played therein. |

had to go to the Asian supermarket. while i was in there, i could here someone's voice yammering from a cell phone. Dang, that's annoying, i thought. Someone is rudely playing their cell phone out loud in the market. As the voice kept talking, it started to sound vaguely familiar... it was Uncle Michael back announcing. Turns out the WFMU app was broadcasting from my back pocket. |

Disco as we came to know it was definitely a common term with the common associations by mid 70s in then northeast, cuz we were already bitching about the trends and traits. I was surprised when after Saturday Night Fever ('77) there was a second wider wave of attention and emphasis that washed over the media and popular culture.....TV, fashion, nightspots becoming disco-ized. But it was definitely a second wave. |

I don't desire many car bells, whistles and widgets...don't have any in my current vehicle (manual window cranks and lock buttons!..nearly Flinstonian!) but the capability to do FMU while motoring, that would be, oh, great -- a blessing. Don't have a phone suited to it now anyway. Warmly late-adopting in tendency. |

@Brian in UK: About 10 years ago my grandmother gave me her Buick which only had a radio and cassette deck in it. I was completely shocked by how great cassettes sounded in it. Really really enjoyable. I don't think any car stereo I have listened to since has compared. |

![]() The funny thing is, when cars had cassette players, there were adapters that made it easy to plug in an iPod or other device with a mini-stereo headphone jack. That became impossible with the switch over to CDs, and you had to use those stupid micro-radio-transmitter things (which never worked well for me) until they came up with the aux jacks. |

![]() @Brian in the UK, I think I have that same Toyota, it's called Avalon, got it when my 100 year old mother in law stopped driving, about 10 years old. (it's now my older daughter's bumper car...) Has CD and cassette, tried to use the cassette for a portable player, never worked |
