2017 might set the record for failure, the way it looks.

Happy New Year, Fabio!
oooooo, Pastor John?
i can dig it!!!

I've no idea what the hell that guy was talking about, but he sure said it with panache.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 3:12pm redkayak:

Happy New Year, all :)
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 3:12pm Fabio:

Happy New Year everybody!

That Morricone piece sounded an awful lot like Ligeti. Wonder whether it was composed after 2001 came out... Liked it anyway; nice call.
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 3:12pm TDK60:

I heard something about your having gone to Merry Olde England, Fabio.

Diamanda delivers.
  Thu. 1/5/17 3:36pm Brendan:

Congrats Fabio. Only discovered you a year or two ago and loving it.
  Thu. 1/5/17 3:41pm Kurt:

Only listened to WFMU on a radio once when driving through the NY area. Many years ago
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 3:42pm TDK60:

Yes Fab, at home I usually listen via old-fashioned radio! But recently, an adjacent station at 90.9 FM has been interfering. I live in Washington Heights, Manhattan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 1/5/17 3:42pm Bismuth Wizard:

Gotta use rabbit ears to pick up the signal in north brooklyn, but yeah, it's the best way to listen
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 3:42pm geezerette:

Fabio !
Red !
Cliff !
  Thu. 1/5/17 3:42pm Polyus:

Radio in my area pretty much blows, I have to listen online to find stations I like.
  Thu. 1/5/17 3:44pm Jeremy:

Terrestrial listener always! Got you nice and clear in upper manhattan, and on my latest thrift store (1975 Pioneer) receiver, I am getting FMU in stereo for the first time ever!
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 3:44pm geezerette:

Fabio, I'm streaming through excellent ancient speakers.
Sounds great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 3:44pm Ike:

@TDK60, that's a pirate, probably from the Bronx. Have you submitted a complaint to the FCC? (Sorry if I'm repeating myself.) Hardly anybody ever does this because nobody understand what is or isn't a pirate or licensed or whatever. I'm not against 'em... as long as they don't mess w/WFMU! As soon as they come after WFMU's airspace, the gig is up! Give the bastards no quarter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 1/5/17 3:44pm steve:

still have a little analog AM/FM radio but have never been able to get wfmu on it over here in Brooklyn (Greenpoint).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 3:45pm Cliff in Prague:

Haven't liked the stations much here in Prague, it's mostly generic pop music (but in Czech!)
Avatar    Thu. 1/5/17 3:45pm Chris from DC:

It's a treat to hear FMU over the air when I'm up that way.
  Thu. 1/5/17 3:45pm tlw:

When at work in NYC, so for your show, I listen on the interweb. But at home in NJ I always have WFMU playing thru the hifi.
  Thu. 1/5/17 3:46pm moose:

fmu reception always been so bad
(I started listening right around time Fabio started being on)
except for in my grandparents' basement in madison (now live in jc, still mostly stream)
listening now on m79 bus through app
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 3:47pm TDK60:

Thanks Ike, may do that. Even though I'm not against pirates generally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 3:53pm ⓘⓚⓔ:

FMU has no other defense. Of course, if anti-govt. types keep getting elected and destroying govt. from within, while radio equipment keeps getting cheaper and pirates keep popping up, maybe we will end up in a wild west libertarian radio dystopia, and legit stations will have to pool resources & hire mafia types or thugs to go out w/baseball bats & find pirates' transmitters, etc. Scary.
  Thu. 1/5/17 4:00pm Polyus:

Like this Min Bul a lot, whoever they are.
  Thu. 1/5/17 4:03pm moose:

though it was on in friends' cars often as teenager (morris county)
  Thu. 1/5/17 4:04pm Beezle Bob:

I can get fmu in east new york but its real fuzzy, listening on laptop, when i'm in the kitchen or in the car its on the radio radio radio yo
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 4:10pm ɨkɛ:

There are now localized 90.9 & 91.3 pirates interfering w/FMU separately in the Bronx, Queens, southern Brooklyn, Elizabeth/southern Newark, and possibly also Paterson. That's 9 or 10 different pirates.
  Thu. 1/5/17 4:16pm Anonymous Coward:

Masers blow up pirates real good...
  Thu. 1/5/17 4:21pm Grumpy:

Having no internet machine, I called a friend on my corded phone to ask them to use their computer to send this. I listen to WFMU on what you call old fashioned devices, both in my home and in my 20 year old car when I drive upstate to the Catskills. I am not happy that WFMU does not seem committed to maintaining its airwaves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 1/5/17 4:23pm steve:

Ike, I was just reading about how AM and FM radio works the other day, and was wondering... can one legally form their own pirate station and rebroadcast WFMU over the pirates?
  Thu. 1/5/17 4:29pm Anonymous Coward:

@seve: No. FMU could repeat its signal (it already does so), but you need a broadcast license to do it.
Avatar    Thu. 1/5/17 4:30pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I'm supposed to be working now - but I'm caught in this piece.
Avatar    Thu. 1/5/17 4:41pm Chris from DC:

This is one of those pieces that does that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 1/5/17 4:42pm pinholga:

Ahhh, it's a different recording than the one I'm used to... I have the one on Angel with Cage pieces on the other side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 4:42pm Lewis:

indeed - I had to shut down the audio so that I could finish reading a long and not-quite-English-fluent email...
Avatar    Thu. 1/5/17 4:44pm V Priceless:

loverly, this
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 4:44pm Unearth Noise:

nice suspension of time.
  Thu. 1/5/17 4:45pm melinda:

@fred: I love 4 Organs too. The chugging maraca sound reminds me of a score for an old film action/chase sequence
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 4:47pm fred:

Possibly the most demanding piece for a contemporary music maracas player. No wonder there are not many of them
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 4:47pm Carmichael:

HA HA Cecile ... I hope you were quoting the Love version, not the Bacharach original.

That WABC thing - was that the John Cage piece?
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:11pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 5:28pm common:

man, i missed a lot of good stuff. hey fabio and everyone!
  Thu. 1/5/17 5:29pm Listener Robert:

This one sounds like a microphone was stuck either in a hornet's nest or in a cavity somewhere that picks up ambient vibrations & resonates to certain ones of them.

Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:31pm Linda Lee:

Let's Get Lost was a fine film for theater.

Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:32pm geezerette:

Linda Lee, have you heard "Chet Baker Sings & Plays"? So wonderful.
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:32pm Linda Lee:

oh yes! used to own it. lost in the shuffle..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 5:35pm Cecile:

Carm, yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 5:35pm common:

saw that doc... and the biopic with ethan hawk. both good. man, what a beautiful voice.
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:36pm Linda Lee:

the words do not matter at all. his voice is an instrument. i don't hear agony, i hear soul & tenderness. just like hearing Billie sing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 5:37pm Carmichael:

That was Chet Baker? I thought it might be Arkesia ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 5:37pm Parq:

The opening scene of the doc, where Baker performs "Almost Blue", is beautiful and harrowing. He is so regal, and so damaged.
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:37pm geezerette:

Love all his early work. The original Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker
recordings from 1953,(?)., very different. Energetic, cheerful playing.
All still on youtube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 5:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

All of it.
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:37pm Linda Lee:

must see James some time soon!
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:40pm Linda Lee:

just gotta reject the 'wreck porn' we attach to some kinds of suffering people. they're beautiful in spite of, not because of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 5:41pm common:

well said, linda lee.
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:41pm Linda Lee:

.. speaking as a wreck myself who isn't very lovely.

Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:44pm geezerette:

Linda@5:36 Exactly!
And yes,I also prefer to celebrate a persons best work, happiest times. Beautiful in spite of, yep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 5:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah - not sure I can separate them; a big part of what I love about LadyDay, Ian Curtis, Cobain - VanGogh is - they aren't f*ckin' kiddin' - it's for real...
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:46pm Linda Lee:

i always go back to Billie too. the work with Basie was beautiful, 'Lady in Autumn' was also beautiful. but 'Lady in Autumn' isn't beautiful because Billie was sick. you know?
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:47pm geezerette:

But RevRab, life's for real; good, bad, all of it.

Linda, absolutely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 5:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ok - but where you get the crowbar in there w/ human nature & the Artist...well, anyway...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/5/17 5:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yerknow - should Hendrix have lived to 70 or did he do what Hendrix was meant to...you're probably right...
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:49pm Linda Lee:

trust me, if i decided to sing 'Almost Blue' while looking like a mobile trainwreck it wouldn't be close to what Chet could do. so the grace of the artist is something extra ..
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:51pm Linda Lee:

a little obvious there, but i mean to say we're dealing with something other than the strictly human in the grace of creative accomplishment ..
  Thu. 1/5/17 5:52pm filipa:

good stuff, i'm inspired
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:52pm Linda Lee:

we'll never know what Jimi might have done given a longer life .. no way to know what that life would have offered his work!
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:54pm geezerette:

Beautifully put.
It's a pleasure to "listen" to both of you. :)
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 5:55pm Linda Lee:

uau for the CM von hausswolff. it's a foggy night here in lisbon, you can't see for more than a meter except light halos. the music is extending the atmosphere into the home great

Man, did I start this? I just said the scene was beautiful. The degree to which the things he went through were reflected in his appearance is worth mentioning only to the extent that he plainly rose above it. I don't know whether Linda or Rev is responding to what I said or just riffing on it, but I agree with everything they said.
Avatar Thu. 1/5/17 6:01pm Linda Lee:
