Great start. Thanks.

Hagbard Celine:

I was just hanging around Conklin's show. Suddenly I'm in this blue room with white curtains. Hello Mark R.
  3:13am
Mark R:

Welcome, Michael and Celine. Please stick around if you can.

I used to hate this album. Over thirty years, when I warmed up to every phase of Miles's career, I warmed up to Bitches Brew. Now I can't understand why I hated it.
  3:16am
Mark R:

A lot of people hated it when it first came out, Scraps. Especially his old fans. Some of them eventually came around like you, some of them, like my dad, never came back. But of course, he picked up a whole bunch of new fans in the process.

may we all have Solstice bonfires

It's funny, but I instantly loved some of late Miles, like On the Corner.

I know this is not exactly FMU's purview, but great 20th century composer Karel Husa (Music for Prague 1968, Apotheosis of this Earth) died on Dec 15.

but this is a great set

Mark R:

I'm not familiar with him, Scraps, but all music is within FMU's purview. I'll certainly keep him in mind for a future show.

Boy I really hated (I'm sorry, I'm not supposed to be discussing my hatings) Gotta Serve Somebody. For so many reasons. Grrrrr, Bob.
  4:04am
Mark R:

It was certainly one of the more confounding phases of Dylan's career, but hearing Pops Staples do it--he was mostly a gospel singer, so in that context "Gotta Serve Somebody" is a great gospel song, no matter who wrote it.
Avatar 4:24am
Scraps:

Oh sure, Pops Staples could make anything attractive. I probably could ignore (or not realize) the offensive lyrics. (I was thirteen or fourteen, Catholic, coming out of a priesthood (I thought) life to suddenly I didn't believe. And then Bob telling me I can serve God or I can serve the devil... well. I thought better of Bob. ;-)

Charles Mingus's bands still play, too? I think

I was lucky when I saw Sun Ra in Seattle (at the Rainbow -- 1984?) when I really didn't know how lucky I was. I was nineteen or so. I knew he was weird, and I was very appreciative of the music.

"Trouble Me" is such a great song.

I didn't get into Merchant that way, but I admired her for sometimes having a spooky songwriting style, that sometimes reached into me and twisted me. Like "Dust Bowl". Whew.
