Options Andy Waltzer: Playlist from March 22, 2003 Options

Sweet, swirly, sullen, and swoony. Silky, sorrowful, sad, and sugary. Some sensational songs. Spoken, sung, sincere. Sleep, sigh, and spin. Sssss.

Options March 22, 2003: Fill-in for Gaylord

Listen to this show:

Artist Track Album Label Comments

Torrez  All On Fire   Options The Evening Drag  Kimchee  I had a dream a where Don Ho was singing this while trying to coax someone not to jump out of a hotel window. I swear it!
The Real Tuesday Weld  Bruises   Options When Cupid Met Psyche
Antony & The Johnsons  Cripple and The Starfish   Options split single with Current 93  Durtro  It sounds lovely, but don't try this at home! Imagine the despair when you chop off your fingers and a starfish does not grow in their place. Argggh!
Judy Henske  You Are Not My First Love   Options

Bruisey Homecoming
After months in rural Minnesota, I am honoured to return and sit in for Gaylord. It feels like home here. Actually, it's nothing like actual home, but it's a metaphoric home. Please forgive my grasping attempts to master the new (to me) mixing board. Great to be here!
Band Of Holy Joy  Capture My Soul   Options Love Never Fails  Rough Trade  This is the kind of song that would make me feel all bold as a teenager, and then I would wear nail polish or something to school and get my ass kicked by the football team. Ah, sweet memories of youth!!
Veda Hille  Instructions   Options Silver  self released  An update on an earlier tune about being told what to do and then not doing what you are told. If you see Veda, ask her to demonstrate "helicopter dancing".
Kenickie  Come Out 2night   Options Skillex EP  Fierce Panda  A nice "young, dumb and full of cum" anthem from a band that I miss.
Sleepy Township  Migraine Boy   Options All These Records  Chapter Music  A true story. If you like early Go Betweens/Cannanes type Australian pop, you will love this cd long time.
Mary Longford  Body Language   Options Miniatures  Voice Print  Odd and brilliant album where each artist is given 60 seconds to fill; Robert Wyatt, Andy Partridge, so many others.
Peggy Honeywell  All Shook Up   Options Honey For Dinner    I usually resist funny cover versions, but the way she seems to be singing the melody in a sideways manner I find disturbing and captivating.

Rebel Wussy Pop

Nocturnal Emmisions  Eeeeeurr   Options Mouth Of Babes  Soleil Moon  All babies are the devil incarnate. At least it often sounds that way on this cd, where the sounds/noises of babies are manipulated into a dark industrial soundscape.
Unbunny  I Hate Rainbows   Options   Tray Full Of Lab Mice  A sweet anti lullaby for grown up children who hate.
The Montgolfier Brothers  The World Is Flat   Options The World Is Flat  Poptones  Being an adult must really suck! Listen to this just after a divorce and you'll probably want to hang yourself. Pretty, though.
The Go Betweens  Suicide At Home   Options Live in Germany    A happy tune about...suicide! At home! Don't try this at home! A friend recorded this off the radio for me, I'm not sure if it's on the any Go Betweens recordings.
Microphones  I Can't Believe You Actually Died   Options Song Islands  K  For about a week I couldn't stop playing this and nobody even died.
Venetian Snares  Lioness   Options Songs About Cats    I'm a sucker for artists that have cats as a muse. Pooka, Big Orange, Vladimir, Sendy...now all my cat friends have a 'web presence'.
Ukranians  Son   Options The Ukranians  Cooking Vinyl  Oddly, contains an ex member of indie rock band The Wedding Present.

Indie Death Pop!

Mum & Dad  The Electric Mistress   Options Mum & Dad  Twisted Nerve  Down On Your Knees! Lick My Shoe! Worship me, you grimy little cretin! Ah, it's kinda refreshing to hear such an over the top ode to s & m. The whole cd is pretty twisted.
Ruth Copeland  To William, In The Night   Options     Just found this in the new bin, and was taken by the wierd sexual psychedelic funk. Some P-Funk players backing her up, I think.
Britt Eckland  Willows Song   Options Wicker Man Soundtrack    You know, it was Saturday night and I was kinda hoping everyone was somewhere sexin'.
Angus Maclisse  Dawn Chorus (excerpt)   Options Dawn Chorus    Mantras for sexin'?
Thug  The Good News & The Bad News   Options Everything Is Beautiful In It's Own Way  Slick  Not Sexy. That's Tex Perkins, of The Cruel Sea & Beasts Of Bourbon getting busted for busking.
Seana Carmody  Smoking In The Dark   Options Struts & Shocks  Kimchee  A really comforting song...she was in the group Syrup USA and I think Helium as well, but these are her best songs.

Sexin', Buskin', and Smokin'

Kyra  Marieke   Options Here I Am I Always Am    ex Headcoatee from her awesome and psychotic solo album.
Art Bears  The Song Of Capitol Investment Overseas   Options Winter Songs  ReR  That scream (of Dagmar Krause) just seems the perfect sound for how many feel after the war broke out. Scary.
The Henrys  Maria Elena   Options Joyous Porous    Sweet Canadian folk tune from an album that features Mary Margaret O'Hara (but not on this song). Definately the bands' most ambitious record yet.
Over The Rhine  Mary's Waltz   Options     This song, to me, is the soundtrack to an amazing friendship I had for awhile. It's the first time I've played it for anyone else and it felt wierd. Hope you liked it!
Mary Coughlan  Lucky Day   Options The Long Honeymoon  Evangeline  Sounds best while pissed and happy at a pub, but Mary is always a gem.

Dementia, Peace, and Drink

Ellis Island Sound  Republica Evescarra   Options Ellis Island Sound  Heavenly  Happy electronic based pop from Wisdom Of Harry/State River Widening folks.
My Mess I Made  The dj Screwing Up   Options Several At Once  several  I freaked out..."omygodihavesolittletimeleftandwhoknowswheniwillbeback...." and I missed a cue and then just piled a bunch of things on, including some locked grooves from a Genesis P Orridge 7 inch. It was fun to make an audio mess!
Laura Veirs  Black Eyed Susan   Options Remote Wing  Knw yr Own  From a comp on the Knw Yr Own label, an untypical folk singer worth looking into.
Saint Etienne  Puppy Love   Options     I have no idea why the s & m theme keeps returning, but the dark and sinister version of this Bobby Vinton hit is hard to resist.

Chaotic Puppy Ending
