I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 11:57am Ken From Hyde Park:

I was busy last Saturday and missed the show. I am here early this week! Greetings, all.
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 12:01pm Mayuko:

yay, Ken! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 12:03pm fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko and Ken. I'm ready for a bunch of bands I have never heard before
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 12:05pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, fred! Hopefully there'll be some of that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 12:08pm fred:

Kokushoku Elegy is new to me. I'm surprised it's from the 90's, it sounds closer to my high-school years
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 12:10pm Mayuko:

They didn't put out much stuff, then Kyoko started OOIOO with Yoshimi. Apparently she passed away last year though, very sad.
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 12:11pm Mayuko:

(Kyoko is the vocal of Kokushoku Elegy)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 12:15pm fred:

I saw OOIOO around five years ago, opening for The Fall. That was a nice show, but somehow I wasn't eager to see either band again. Too much of a show maybe. Sad to hear she died. I liked the OOIOO records, and I liked this Sun Stroke a lot
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 12:18pm fred:

If Kokushoku Elegy reminded me of Siouxsie, Radio Insane sounds like PIL trading away their stash of weed for speed
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 12:21pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I like the rampant energy these bands exhibit.
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 12:25pm Mayuko:

Kokushoku Elegy is actually from the 80's, the album I played is the last compilation that put together most of their releases and came out in the 90's. I'm sure they were influenced by Siouxsie...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 12:28pm fred:

A few of these bands reminded me of a really good show I saw a couple weeks ago: Hiko (solo at first then a guitar played joined in without accounting for much). He apparently was in a band named Gauze, I don't know anything about them
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 12:35pm Jason Elbogen:

Mayuko--how did she pass away?
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 12:36pm Jason Elbogen:

[the woman from IOOOIOO] I mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 12:37pm fred:

Nice enough for me: I've already clicked three stars
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 12:39pm Jason Elbogen:

Yes--I had a 3" CD a long time ago by a Japanese band called 'Dowser'. I think it was one of the few I had...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 12:41pm fred:

Gah! Work intrusion: if "f" is "frequency", "1/f" is "period". Stuff like that just pops into my mind. I need a break
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 12:42pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I found there are some kind of CDs that are the size & shape of a credit card or business card. Wild. Probably for data storage with resume or product info and not so much for music, I suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 12:44pm fred:

@Ken: I saw some with music, decades ago. Good luck getting those out of an apple computer though, so I think they're out of style. Then again, apple got rid of CDs altogether
  Sat. 10/29/16 12:44pm rw:

Hello! Just arrived. Glad to hear Play Vertigo's been extended. I'm rebuilding a bicycle wheel in my backyard and can really use that extra hour…
  Sat. 10/29/16 12:45pm P-90:

Greetings, DJ "M. Fusing" and Vertigo players!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 12:46pm fred:

@rw: Yeah, two hours is not enough
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 12:46pm Mayuko:

Hallo Jason!! She had been ill - not specified what it was I think.
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 12:46pm Jason Elbogen:

This Karate track is great... Had never heard of them/him
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 12:50pm Mayuko:

Glad to have you here, rw!! And hallo, P-90, welcome to Mukluk show, haha.
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 12:51pm Mayuko:

@Jason This Kinniku Shojotai is the later project by the same guy in Karate Bakabon. VERY different though...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 12:55pm fred:

3" CDs were popular for samplers over here in the early 90's. I just fished out one with Front 242 and Meat Beat Manifesto
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 12:58pm Mayuko:

Were those 3" cds in that rectangular format, though? like approx 3" x 6" plastic case with paper cover.
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 1:02pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello fighting boys and fighting girls!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 1:02pm fred:

No, these were round. I remember seeing the rectangular ones, but I didn't find one today. These were probably too prone to getting stuck or not playing correctly
That Moudoku track was quite fun, especially it being on vinyl
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 1:04pm Mayuko:

Oh, sorry I meant about the case, not the CD itself - the cd is usual 3".
That Moudoku track used samplings of a famous wrestler, it is pretty funny.
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 1:04pm Mayuko:

Doug!!! Glad to see you here!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 1:05pm tmoyo:

Giant BABA!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 1:07pm tmoyo:

Enjoying your show in the wee hours in Japan!
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 1:07pm Mayuko:

@tmoyo EXACTLY! & hallos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 1:07pm fred:

No, there was just a square cardboard sleeve on the few I got
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 1:08pm Mayuko:

oh great, finally a fellow Japanese listener!!!!! Thanks for tuning in, tmoyo san!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 10/29/16 1:09pm Ike:

Present!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 1:09pm tmoyo:

I usually listen to the archives for your show because of the time difference. Nice to catch you live!
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 1:32pm Mayuko:

That's great, thank you always for listening then, tmoyo san!
Welcome, Ike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 1:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Ike - Have you been working on your goatpuncher costume for Halloween?
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 1:35pm Mayuko:

Halloween... no halloween for me this year, so sad!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 1:38pm fred:

@Mayuko: Halloween is on Monday, you could still show up on Dave Hill's show and grab a bag of oreos
  Sat. 10/29/16 1:41pm Joe McG:

Mayuko, is this an answer song to PiL's "This Is Not a Love Song"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 1:41pm fred:

Wow, a PIL tribute band
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 1:48pm fred:

@Joe: In a way it sounded closer to First Issue, like Annalisa or Low Life, than to This is not a love song
  Sat. 10/29/16 1:48pm rw:

Fred, you're absolutely right. I'm about an hour in and so far I've got it laced. Good news is it looks like a bicycle wheel.

Mayuko, happy to be here! Finally figuring out how to work this show into my Saturday routine.
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 1:50pm Mayuko:

Hola, Joe McG! I'd think so - I don't have any information about this band, only I knew they're related to Public Bath label.
  Sat. 10/29/16 1:51pm Joe McG:

@fred: I think you're right, fred, but the date of issue is so close that maybe they were having a little joke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 1:55pm fred:

@Joe: I sure think there were having a joke, and a smart one at that, using PIL's earlier sound while answering PIL's biggest hit, which was making fun of selling out. John Lydon is a master of confusion
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 10/29/16 2:01pm Ike:

@KFHP, oops, I should've done that! A co-worker went yesterday as a bunch of grapes (purple balloons taped to herself) -- best costume I've seen lately!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 2:02pm tmoyo:

That book is collecting dust on my shelf for decades now..Ill should try to find time to finish it..
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 2:04pm fred:

A good friend is from Aomori. That's in the North, right?
It took me about 15 years of failed attempts to finally make it through Finnegan's Wake. And I'll need at least a couple more runs before I can tell what's going on there
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 2:08pm Mayuko:

I remained sane, but someone I knew who LOVED Kyusaku Yumeno (the author of Doglamagla) died for a mysterious reason, we never found out if it was suicide or an accident.
  Sat. 10/29/16 2:08pm Dean:

Anthony Burgess to the rescue, fred: http://www.metaportal.com.br/jjoyce/burgess1.htm Props to you for completing it. Can't say I have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 2:12pm fred:

@Dean: Before finally completing it I would often pick it up and read a few pages or more at random, just for the language. I still do that. Maybe I missed something, but I enjoy this far more than reading through it cover to cover
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 2:13pm Mayuko:

Finnegan's Wake would have been a great example to bring up while my mic break, fred! Doglamagla is kind of like it, much easier to read though. and yes, Aomori is north - Non from NON baNd we just heard is from there.
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 2:13pm Mayuko:

Hi Dean! Glad to have you here!
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 2:14pm Mayuko:

(Sorry if any Japanese listeners are offended by this tape ... it IS disturbing!)
  Sat. 10/29/16 2:14pm Dean:

@fred: I doubt Joyce intended it to be a page-turner. OTOH, as much as I love reading "just for the language" (e.g., the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E crowd of poets), I suspect Joyce also wanted to address issues. The question becomes how independent are issues from language?
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 2:15pm Mayuko:

These are all samplings from the cult in 90's Japan called Aum, who killed many people in the subway using Sarin in 1995. Their slogans and songs they composed and stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 2:18pm fred:

@Mayuko: Maybe Micah played some of their songs
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 2:19pm Mayuko:

@fred I thought about that too, I'll look!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 2:23pm fred:

@Dean: I don't know. Not as is "I disagree but I'm too polite to say so" but as in "I have no clue". I'd have to go through it again, but I lack so much knowledge of local history. I'm already ashamed of saying I read Finnegan's wake. I'm not sure I could handle understanding it
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 2:25pm tmoyo:

Aum's spin off sect lead by the PR guy seems to be having a decent following. No substance abuse, crazy songs and dancing i guess.
  Sat. 10/29/16 2:29pm Dean:

Having read the book, you have a helluva better clue than I do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 2:31pm fred:

@Mayuko: Speaking of North, I still check out Marewrew's facebook page once in a while, I guess there would be characters I can read if they ever tour around here
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 2:45pm fred:

Some people want to be in charge, no wonder people in stores hate them. I always ask for advice, like you did, saying what I know and like. Works at record stores, at bookshops, and especially at whisky stores. Not only did I get great advice, I once got an old peated Karuizawa straight from the cask sample as a thank you from saving the guy from a customer loudly proclaiming his expertise about Johnny Walker
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 10/29/16 2:47pm Ike:

Re: anti-JM comments: Throughout the history of FMU comments, there have always been occasional comments hating on JM in the AM, probably mostly by far left, knee-jerk pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel folks (I think both sides are often awful). It's too simplistic of a view.
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 2:51pm Mayuko:

I used to do that all the time at any record stores I went, fred! It was a fun time - Koji Tano from MSBR was one of those people who I could always ask for suggestions and never get disappointed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 10/29/16 2:51pm Ike:

Since 1980 or so, WFMU has included JM and has been an alliance between different groups who love radio despite having very different political viewpoints. Even after JM in the AM leaves, there will still be conservatives at WFMU, like Irwin. Nobody can question that JM in the AM was crucial to WFMU's survival, especially in the 90s when it often raised over a third of the marathon totals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 2:52pm fred:

@Ike: I have no sympathy for Nachum's overt political views. But I loved that he and WFMU could work together. I think that tells something too. For this reason, I'll miss JM in the AM. The money is another thing
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 2:55pm Mayuko:

@Ike I mean, it's fine to have difference in opinions esp when it comes to politics, it's natural. Although I totally agree nothing is never simple. I was just sad see some comments were hateful. He doesn't deserve it. If he was insisting something really crazy like real ethnic cleansing I would think station manager Ken would have done something for sure.
  Sat. 10/29/16 2:55pm mzz:

Hi Mayu, got back to you show late today.
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 2:56pm Mayuko:

Hola, mzz!!
  Sat. 10/29/16 2:56pm rw:

Thank you Mayuko! Excellent show as always. Wheel's almost finished…
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 2:57pm fred:

@Ike: Also, the JM in the AM / Scott Mc Dowell transition was the best ever. Someone has to make it happen before the opportunity goes away. Hatikvah into Hipnosis would be such a great send-off
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 2:57pm Mayuko:

The show is at the end of it too, rw, and thank YOU for listening! This is the last song today - thank you everyone for tuning in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 2:58pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Mayuko. Have a pleasant Halloween weekend.
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 3:00pm Mayuko:

And thank you all for your generous pledges!!!! I should be able to find out the list of you all soon - I'm very sorry I haven't been able to thank on the air.

The rest of you, please pledge and help the station's fight for survival!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 3:00pm fred:

Thanks for the extended show Mayuko! I hope you'll stick with the 3 hours format (one more week at least)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 3:00pm tmoyo:

戸川純。。Great show! Have a nice day, oyasuminasai
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 3:02pm fred:

I love some of Jun Togawa's songs, including with Yapoos. I hate many others. So I guess I like her
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 3:05pm Mayuko:

Can't not have her when you're doing a Japanese show! Got some Yapoos too, will play some other time. Thanks again all, have a great week!
Avatar Sat. 10/29/16 3:14pm Mayuko:

at 3pm now, the first 2 hours has been archived so far - the rest will be posted later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 10/29/16 5:07pm fred:

Hey, I just remembered I should be outraged about your not playing Sakamoto. Which tells you how little I care, but also that he was my gateway to weirdness.
  Sat. 10/29/16 6:58pm mzz:

oh well jeez JPN 45 were all annoying in a good way.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 2:02am Mayuko:

@fred I know! I had a YMO single ready to play, it was a bummer I ran out of time.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 2:03am Mayuko:

@mzz haha! Thank you for listening!
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 12:47pm Gary:

Listening now ... and officially begging you to put together a J-postpunk CD for 2017's marathon :)
Avatar Tue. 11/1/16 10:13am Mayuko:

Thanks for listening Gary! Joe McG said I can just make this show into a marathon premium too, haha. I guess I should think about it!
