I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Hello everybody from the extremely wet and miserable Isle Of Man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
fred:

Vaudou Game will be playing nearby in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately it's on a Saturday, and that means I'll have to miss this show. Live music comes first, there's no archive for that

Isle Of Man! the island with the coolest flag ever! (although I don't know the meaning of it...) Welcome on board, crissbiscit!!! It's chilly and not very nice weather here in NJ too...
Avatar 12:20pm
Mayuko:

Agreed, fred, live music certainly has the priority! Wish I could go see them too.

It is good isn't it. The meaning of it is 'whichever way you throw me I will stand' Just looking at some of your work on Instagram, lovely stuff.

Hello Mayuko. Rare opportunity to catch you live today.

But today I'm listening, with ice cream and Oreos at hand (Oreos were on sale at my local discount supermarket today, I couldn't resist)

Now I like that flag even more, you certainly got the best flag in the world, crissbiscit! And thank you for your kind words! Hello Polyus, glad to have you here!!

Hopefully I'll get my oreo too next week since I am filling in for Jesse's Frow Show, which means I'm going after Dave Hill with endless resource of oreos. There's gotta be some leftover.

Yeah, make sure Danne D doesn't scoop them all up when he leaves for the night.

I saw Aly Keïta last week and really enjoyed that show. He plays balafon, another great instrument from Western Africa (I like it better than kora, but I own my bias for percussion)

I'll probably try get here early and break into Dave's show, Ken!

I did not know that Dave Hill has a regular Oreo cache. I may have to work his phone shift at the next Marathon.

I think the first time I saw the Isle of Man flag was in Matthew Barney's Cremaster film (which also features Guinness, ensuring my favor)

Speaking of percussive instrument, I saw some amazing thing from Vanuatu at the met museum that I def need to look up! It's called ambrym gong. Does anyone know about it?
  12:46pm

I've never seen that film Fred, but Guinness could be considered something of an (unofficial) national drink.

@ crissbiscit: I realize I've never tried a whisky from your neck of the woods. Is there a distillery you'd recommend?

There is one called ManX, you can buy it online, I have to confess I've never tried it, I'd recommend kippers if you've never tried them.

P-90:

The "Slit Gong" (Atingting Kon) is a large gong, carved from a section of tree trunk, that is used in the gong orchestras of the Vanatu yIslands, like Ambrym. These gong orchestras are similar to, and probably influenced by, the Gamelan orchestras of Bali, and are perform at local festivals like the ones at which Balinese Gamelan orchestras perform. Some of these slit gongs are really big, and are considered to be among the largest musical instruments in the world. Some of them are quite ornately carved and decorated, l'm guessing the one you saw at the museum was like that @Mayuko

When my brother was adopted from Korea, he had a record of children songs. More than three decades later, I kinda like hearing Santoki, whereas songs from my own childhood are just grating
Avatar 1:14pm
Mayuko:

@P-90 yeah! it was HUGE! and beautiful. I didn't even realize that it was a musical instrument first. I'd seen it a couple of times before but my bad habit is that I never read anything in the description, so only last week I learned what it was.
Avatar 1:16pm

@fred, yeah, long story short, that's where my show name came from. not easy to summarize things clearly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
melinda:

hi all!
  1:20pm
P-90:

I'm fascinated to hear what Mayuko had in mind when she imagined the title "Play Vertigo" for her show. It's such an interesting combination of two English words that it has a poetic, amibuous quality when you first see it: like those rwo words together suggest many possible meanings.
So it's really cool to hear this explanation of the inspiration for the title.
Every child I knew growing up enjoyed spinning around to induce dizziness (vertigo). Some of us would do it to the point where we were quite incapacited and could not even stand up for a few minutes afterward. I've talked with friends about this peculiar "game" that children do spontaneously, and often in groups. It seems like it was the kids with the "smartest", most "imaginative" personalities who liked this activity the most and often encouraged other kids to play too.
Maybe it does come from an instictive impulse to self-induce a "disoriented" state, in which the mind is momentarily cleared, much like it is in meditation.
One other thing: some of us would spin around holding our pet cats close to our chests, inducing "play vertigo" in the cats as well. Interestingly, the cats were happy to play along and never objected or ran away to avoid participating. They seemed "curious" like the children were, that their senses could be momentarily disoriented in this way. We had seen documentary footage on TV of NASA spinning astronauts around in big centrifuge macines to simulate different "G-forces", so we called this game "Astronaut Training for Cats".
Avatar 1:26pm
Mayuko:

@zmzz that's very good/interesting point re the scale! Her husband is Toshiyuki Tsuchitori who was performing old(est?) enka songs from the late 1800. I think I played his stuff before (or remembering planning to play... not sure I really did...) but don't know really much about them. Should get some books to read/learn what kind of ideas they had in reviving all those old music, because selecting scales and all gotta be intentional.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
fred:

Wow, how amazing that a French guy I had never heard about before is referenced in this way. According to wikipedia he linked "Ilinx" to dance, something I don't do but love even more than music
Avatar 1:27pm

Hello melinda! Thank you for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm

Both tracks from the Philippines were really beautiful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
melinda:

@P-90: Astronaut Training for Cats, both weird and cute! I think I did the spinning around bit as a kid but it would not have occurred to me to include one of our cats.
Avatar 1:33pm
Mayuko:

ah! P-90, thank you for explaining everything on behalf of me. "disoriented state" is right on point! Thank you for understanding the idea so clearly from such disoriented mic break, haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
listener james from westwood:

This album could also be titled, "Soothing Sounds for Copy Editors Who Want to Throttle the Authors of the Books They're Editing."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
fred:

@melinda: maybe those cats didn't want to include their humans
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
fred:

@James: I take it that your not a copy editor
Avatar 1:40pm
Mayuko:

Yes, I certainly think dancing brings the sense of disorientation and losing borderline of self, fred! That's what I love about it. and I like carousels too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
listener james from westwood:

@fred: I am a copy editor, and the feeling was real.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
melinda:

For deliberate disorientation I liked to stand on my head to see everything upside-down. I don't do it now, though, feels dangerous at adult body size.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
fred:

@james: I feel your pain. That intentional pun of spelling that "your" was more painful to me than I thought it would be
Avatar 1:45pm
Mayuko:

@melinda haha! that's a great one and I used to do that too (probably just like every other kids.) Now I feel like I should try it out again and see how it feels. but with a wall to support.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
paul b:

Sorry Mayuko, I was doing apartments chores during your last Mic break when you were talking about your show name Play Vertigo and childhood spinning play. I just want to add now to what other people said that it reminded me of the sensations Patti Smith is singing about in her song "Dancing Barefooot"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
melinda:

Yeah, I might try it against a wall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
fred:

I have a hole in my inner ear, so disorientation is all to easy for me. I'm a cheater. Danne D would say that's why I like the Patriots
  1:47pm
P-90:

I think it is very interesting that childen will spontaneously learn to play this vertigo "game". I'm thinking about it now that I've studied a little neurological science and learned a bit about meditation. It does seem like a "short cut" to a state where the mind is brought completely into the present moment like it is for experienced meditators, because when you're that dizzy you are in fact quite confined to the present moment, your mind can't wander. A psychedlic experience for toddlers! It also occurs to me that the effort required to spin in this determined way for a full minute or two, to get the full effect, accellerates the heart rate, and therefore requires quite a bit of strong breathing and oxygenates the blood (and brain). This is another resemblance to meditation practice. Hmmm...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
listener james from westwood:

@fred: Hah, I get ya. And deliberately typing errors is indeed tough to do and then to read over!
Avatar 1:51pm
Mayuko:

@paul b ha! "Here I go when I don't know why / I spin so ceaselessly" ... I guess she certainly knows/remembers this feeling!
Avatar 1:53pm
Mayuko:

The other mystery was why the spinning would burst into laughter. I used to laugh out loud at the end of spinning when I get so dizzy and exhausted and couldn't spin any longer. What is that laughter and senseless happiness?
Avatar 1:53pm
Mayuko:

(not "the other".... "another?" needs a copy editor!)
Avatar 1:54pm
Mayuko:

not even a copy editor, ESL teacher I suppose.
  1:55pm
P-90:

@melinda: I suggest doing it the way kids do, just stand in one place and vigorously twirl around for 90 seconds or so, as fast as you can (with eyes open), then just lie down in place, and notice the effects of the vertigo (and hyperventilation) "high"
Avatar 1:56pm
Mayuko:

I see, it's a kind of getting "high", that's why you laugh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
fred:

Jason is an ESL teacher. His credentials as oreo provider are sketchy though. Maybe Danne D is a better resource on balance
  1:58pm
P-90:

@fred: if you have a perforated tympanum, that shouldn't affect your abilty to spin and "play vertigo"
Avatar 1:59pm
Mayuko:

My last track today! Thank you for spinning with me for two hours all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm

Thanks Mayuko!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm

"This conversation is spinning out of control," he said dizzily.

P-90:

Arigato, @DJ Mayuko. Great show today, and I'm looking forward to those upcoming fill-ins. You should go ahaed and invade Dave's show as a guest before you do the show after his. He always seems to "grow up" a little when you're around. In a good way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
fred:

Thanks Mayuko, I have a bunch of oreos left, but I'll just have to eat them, you're just too far away. Too far for oreos, but not for music. Tech has its priorities right (for me)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
