I saw Aly Keïta last week and really enjoyed that show. He plays balafon, another great instrument from Western Africa (I like it better than kora, but I own my bias for percussion)

The "Slit Gong" (Atingting Kon) is a large gong, carved from a section of tree trunk, that is used in the gong orchestras of the Vanatu yIslands, like Ambrym. These gong orchestras are similar to, and probably influenced by, the Gamelan orchestras of Bali, and are perform at local festivals like the ones at which Balinese Gamelan orchestras perform. Some of these slit gongs are really big, and are considered to be among the largest musical instruments in the world. Some of them are quite ornately carved and decorated, l'm guessing the one you saw at the museum was like that @Mayuko

I'm fascinated to hear what Mayuko had in mind when she imagined the title "Play Vertigo" for her show. It's such an interesting combination of two English words that it has a poetic, amibuous quality when you first see it: like those rwo words together suggest many possible meanings.
So it's really cool to hear this explanation of the inspiration for the title.
Every child I knew growing up enjoyed spinning around to induce dizziness (vertigo). Some of us would do it to the point where we were quite incapacited and could not even stand up for a few minutes afterward. I've talked with friends about this peculiar "game" that children do spontaneously, and often in groups. It seems like it was the kids with the "smartest", most "imaginative" personalities who liked this activity the most and often encouraged other kids to play too.
Maybe it does come from an instictive impulse to self-induce a "disoriented" state, in which the mind is momentarily cleared, much like it is in meditation.
One other thing: some of us would spin around holding our pet cats close to our chests, inducing "play vertigo" in the cats as well. Interestingly, the cats were happy to play along and never objected or ran away to avoid participating. They seemed "curious" like the children were, that their senses could be momentarily disoriented in this way. We had seen documentary footage on TV of NASA spinning astronauts around in big centrifuge macines to simulate different "G-forces", so we called this game "Astronaut Training for Cats".

@zmzz that's very good/interesting point re the scale! Her husband is Toshiyuki Tsuchitori who was performing old(est?) enka songs from the late 1800. I think I played his stuff before (or remembering planning to play... not sure I really did...) but don't know really much about them. Should get some books to read/learn what kind of ideas they had in reviving all those old music, because selecting scales and all gotta be intentional.

I think it is very interesting that childen will spontaneously learn to play this vertigo "game". I'm thinking about it now that I've studied a little neurological science and learned a bit about meditation. It does seem like a "short cut" to a state where the mind is brought completely into the present moment like it is for experienced meditators, because when you're that dizzy you are in fact quite confined to the present moment, your mind can't wander. A psychedlic experience for toddlers! It also occurs to me that the effort required to spin in this determined way for a full minute or two, to get the full effect, accellerates the heart rate, and therefore requires quite a bit of strong breathing and oxygenates the blood (and brain). This is another resemblance to meditation practice. Hmmm...

@melinda: I suggest doing it the way kids do, just stand in one place and vigorously twirl around for 90 seconds or so, as fast as you can (with eyes open), then just lie down in place, and notice the effects of the vertigo (and hyperventilation) "high"
