Good morning, @listener james!

Howdy Jeff and listeners. Haven't been able to catch the show on Sunday morning for a few weeks. Nice to hear it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 9:46am listener james from westwood:

IIRC, if it helps, I think Wojtek and its similar spellings are roughly pronounced "VOY-check."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/11/16 9:48am melinda:

hi Jeff & others!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 9:51am Jeff Golick:

Awesome, @Polyus. Great to see you here.
And hi to you, @melinda. Delighted to see you, as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 9:52am Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: That does help; thanks. I will likely forget it for the next time, unfortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 9:53am listener james from westwood:

No worries. And I got nothin on how to do Ksawery. :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 9:54am listener james from westwood:

I only remember Wojtek b/c a guy w/ a similar name was one of Manson's Cielo Drive victims. Ask me to parties, I'm a hoot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 9:56am Jeff Golick:

All I can think of now is Wojo from Barney Miller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 9:57am Jeff Golick:

Ps. I'm over here by the bathroom, @ljfw. You can talk Manson murders with me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 9:57am listener james from westwood:

@Jeff: Yes!! Wojo FTMFW. I love how he says at one point to a puzzled person who's trying to pronounce it, "It sounds just like it looks."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:01am listener james from westwood:

I do think one of my missed opportunities, having spent my full adult life in the burbs, is not having lived in a major metropolis that affords one access to all-night rambling parties, from which one can simply take a cab or public transit home after hours spent gabbing in the kitchen or whatnot and getting slowly more loopy. Having to drive to all social occasions does blow sometimes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:04am Jeff Golick:

I would agree, @ljfw. Not that I've been to that very many parties. I now think of it in terms of my kids, a teen and tween. Glad that they will not be barreling home in a car through the 'burbs to beat curfew, as was my lot.

How did we all survive?
Avatar Sun. 9/11/16 10:05am glenn:

really, barney miller is one of the all time great teevee shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/11/16 10:05am Andrew Waterloo:

@listener james. The big city thing is being able to walk or take the subway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/11/16 10:06am melinda:

Barney Miller had a great theme, too.
Avatar Sun. 9/11/16 10:06am glenn:

although i recall the pilot episode being completely different in tone from the actual series.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/11/16 10:07am Polyus:

@Jeff - having been a teenager out in the sticks, I wonder the same thing. We did some pretty stupid things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:07am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I imagine Barney trying on his new 21st Century Police Armor & just not being down...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:07am Jeff Golick:

The Barney Miller theme is indeed a stone-cold classic, @melinda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/11/16 10:08am melinda:

Going to college in a small town meant being able to walk from one party to another, too. Good times. Not that I went to a lot, but still.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/11/16 10:09am melinda:

That's a great image, Rabbit.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:14am Jeff Golick:

Well those are cool.
Avatar Sun. 9/11/16 10:15am glenn:

they really are. i use them all the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:18am listener james from westwood:

Barney Miller was a staple rerun watch in my late grammar and middle school years. Understood about half of what they were talking about in my early years but was riveted. I also adored the set; it felt so lived in, like the original Odd Couple set. And that theme! So much with so little!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:19am listener james from westwood:

(Was also an Odd Couple addict thru that time. Shit, I think WPIX out of NYC played 'em both.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:20am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, that set. So borderline ugly. So orangey-yellow. Did they occasionally shoot outside? Or never...?
Avatar Sun. 9/11/16 10:21am glenn:

it was an homage to nicotine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:29am Jeff Golick:

Ha.

So I guess no one watches The Brady Bunch or Gilligan's Island anymore?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:30am listener james from westwood:

There were occasional departures from the set (Barney's apartment; I think Chano got in a shootout in a stairwell) but they eventually dwindled to nil (1 set = cheaper of course).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/11/16 10:30am Andrew Waterloo:

I watched the first 2 seasons of Gilligan's Island a couple years ago

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/11/16 10:39am melinda:

@james: that's how I felt about the show, too. Didn't get all of it but liked it anyway, and thought all shows set in NYC were actually filmed there. Fooled me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:39am listener james from westwood:

It's odd I haven't vacationed more up the Hudson Valley. So many gorgeous options. I tagged a sweet AirBnB a while back right near the river, but for some reason AirBnB now refuses my password and all attempts to reset it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:40am Jeff Golick:

@Andrew Waterloo: belated warm greetings! Did that show hold up at all?
  Sun. 9/11/16 10:42am Dean:

I'm going to write a book about encounters with the spouses off Rova. Just Friday as I left campus I crossed paths with Lyn Hejinian. She's married to Larry Ochs (and vice versa). Once at a record store in town I purchased a solo record by Bruce Ackley. The clerk who rang me out looked at his co-clerk and said, "Look. He's buying your husband's record." Ackl;ey wasn't in the store, but Jon Raskin was.
  Sun. 9/11/16 10:43am Dean:

*spouses of Rova

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:47am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Dean. That book would appeal to a highly specific group of readers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:47am Jeff Golick:

("group")
  Sun. 9/11/16 10:49am Dean:

Maybe a screenplay, then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/11/16 10:53am Andrew Waterloo:

@Jeff. It kind of did. It's silly, and I found a lot of the humour came from how self aware it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:53am Jeff Golick:

Much better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 10:54am Jeff Golick:

^^^^ (Much better, @Dean.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/11/16 11:07am Andrew Waterloo:

that reminds me that I have a Rova DVD to watch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 11:10am Jeff Golick:

'zat the Ascension one, @AW?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 9/11/16 11:16am Andrew Waterloo:

@Jeff, yes, it's my first "I was there" concert
  Sun. 9/11/16 11:17am Dean:

I think I bought my copy of Rova's Ascension CD (the first one from '95) at DMG around 15 years ago. It's still sealed. I need to remedy that situation. Electric Ascension from '03, however, is open and has been played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 11:23am Jeff Golick:

Very cool, @AW. Should play something from that record here, at some point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 11:24am Jeff Golick:

Don't have that '95 one, @Dean.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 11:31am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Obvious - just don't think of him as sideman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 11:33am Jeff Golick:

Happened with Rollins a bit.
  Sun. 9/11/16 11:34am Dean:

No kidding, @Jeff G.! Kinda striking, the comments from '99, posted in a pre-9/11 world, when "the world is screaming to the top of itself" meant something different, if it means anything at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 11:37am Jeff Golick:

To quote Mr. Davies, "Young and innocent days."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 11:43am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My Sansa with RockBox is still running. It's my backup while travelling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 12:02pm Ike:

IMHO you should *never* trust no-name Chinese electronics. It'll probably turn into a brick soon. Sony makes some decent MP3 "Walkman" players (though some recent reviews say they've gone downhill). Or try Sansa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 9/11/16 12:03pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks (and hello, @Ike!) y'all. Take care, @duke; @RRN63; @Andrew; @Ike; and all assembled.

Several iPods from working a thrift store. The small ones would shuffle podcasts - but the batteries & such would crap out. So - buy a battery bar - but they crapped out anyhow...The larger ones hold a charge & much more GBs - but I only need what I can hear in day, really...& they don't shuffle podcasts (which gives me like my own station, kindof)...Do iPhones shuffle podcasts? Maybe if I make a Playlist...

Being on opposite coast I have to listen in archives but Jazz is my favorite music and your show is always wonderful. Just a note of appreciation, thanks for doing D.O.!
