Ahhh, my favorite part of the week is here once more.
![]() |
![]() ![]() Hey Cecile! I told PJ to be on the lookout for Sheila, but I wasn't sure how I could describe her. Sheila, I was hoping your personality would cause you to be recognized ... |
![]() |
![]() Hello my favorite people! Isn't it grand @The Contessa?! This really should be my single of the week, but it came so perfectly after the John Barry song. |
![]() |
![]() ![]() Hi everyone. Working on my next book PLATENBOEK 4 is soooo relaxed when listening to this radio programme. |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:09pm
P-90:
Greetings Sheila! I always loved Ski Chase! Classic John Barry, very 60's-nostalgic.
![]() |
![]() Who else knows Earl Okin, without the Roger? |
![]() |
![]() Hi, glad to be boom booming today |
![]() |
![]() wow ~ extra special show today! love it. |
![]() |
![]() Good evening Sheila, good evening everyone. Pygmalion is such a great record. By far the best Slowdive LP. I think I read recently how much Alan McGee regrets dumping them and admits what a great record this is. *INTERRUPTS SELF* Jenny HVAL!!! |
![]() |
![]() @Linda Lee This show does feel very special. I found SO many exciting records! |
![]() |
![]() ![]() Nice title of your show. Reminds me of I never met a girl like you before (KInks). |
![]() |
![]() ![]() you have a happy audience as always |
![]() |
![]() @Adrian in London Haha! Great post! Yup brand new Jenny Hval. And that Slowdive LP is a beauty, though I have a soft spot for Just For A Day. |

Hello djsheilab and boom boomers. Raining here but Sophisticated Boom Boom is my rainbow.
![]() |
![]() @Sheila Yes, Just for a Day is lovely too. I found myself listening to the first Ride LP a lot this week and loving Polar Bear. I saw them a lot when they started out. |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:16pm
JakeGould:
Hey Cooh John! Bring that sweat rain to disgusting NYC. |
![]() |
![]() ![]() sweat rain = Ewwww! Also: Hello, everyone! |

JakeGould:
The one thing I like about this heat is in NYC is you can pretty much just turn to anyone on the subway in NYC and just say, “This heat’s nuts!” and they will agree. |
![]() |
![]() This is dreamy to my ears |
![]() |
![]() @JtotheK Sweet! I think it may be my favorite of her's. |
![]() |
![]() She's as heavy as a Chevy! BEST LYRIC EVER. |
![]() |
![]() Hello @Ken, anything happening we should know about? The weather… birds? |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:27pm
Cecile:
sweat rain is what Saturday was here. The clouds sweated. For seven hours |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:27pm
Cooh John:
I will be misled! | |
![]() this tune makes me me nostalgic for the era of aerobics videos
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:28pm
Cecile:
is that Peggy March the "little Peggy March"? |
![]() |
![]() ![]() my favorite Peggy March song is Too long away where she's accompanied by Dutch band The Hunters featuring a young Jan Akkerman |
![]() |
![]() ![]() Really like her German language schlager 'Mit 17 Hat Man Noch Träume' |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:28pm

Corn sweat rain. |
![]() |
![]() ![]() @The Contessa - Hi there. It's been hot here lately and most birds seem to lie low during the day. It's fun to lie back and watch hawks and vultures circling up in the sky. |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:31pm
Whooda:
Always enjoy happy magic DJ Sophisticated Boom Boom Shelia. Thanks. |
![]() also the Cosby sweater on that dude on the right from the Kool & the Gang cover!!!
![]() |
![]() @Ken, hawks and vultures! We can offer swifts and jays! |
![]() |
![]() Jonathan Richman is a great lyricist. In Walter Johnson: "When the Washington Niners were gonna win/Walter Johnson eased up on the opposi-shin/("Yeah, that's right)"! |

Fri. 7/29/16 3:34pm
Cheri Pi:
She's massive! did you have glow sticks? |
![]() |
![]() @Sheila Ah, she played Koko in Camden the other week. I know Glass went to see her. |
![]() |
![]() Jake ~ someone might just say 'heats? boils more like it' |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:37pm
JakeGould:
The thing about this weather in NYC right now is all the pizza crusts feel soggy and all the food from food trucks feel sweaty. I’m just going to eat savory ice cream for the next few weeks. |
![]() |
![]() ![]() @sheilaB - per our discussion last week, at area shop I did not find a bronzettes 'hot spot' on parkway. and i learned that i missed out on vickie baines 'country girl' on parkway, and probably passed it in bins without realizing. ugh. i'm convincing myself it would've been out of my budget. |
![]() |
![]() ![]() but i /did/ find a Neil Sedaka "Too Late" 45 (for 50 cents!) which was quite rewarding. |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:39pm
Joanne Stato:
Boom Boom everybody! Got here late, just in time to hear Sheila's upbeat recap of set 1! So good to be here! (Love this Fashion Monster.)
![]() |
![]() @SHeila Listening to this set, and knowing how giddy you get, it's barely credible to recall you started your WFMU tenure by playing three weeks of despairingly desolate sad music. However did you cope?! |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:42pm
statoj:
Weird. It signed me in as Joanne Stato" but I am really "statoj"!!! |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:44pm
statoj:
Yes! I remember the "Sad sheilab." All sheilabs are wonderful. Different faces of the same prism. It perhaps I should say "diamond." |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:45pm
Cooh John:
looking forward to your next Friedman slip JG.
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:45pm
Cecile:
I missed your update, Carm. Thank you! |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:46pm
Cecile:
Cybill is an A-OK singer! |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:46pm
JakeGould:
HAAHHAH! Friedman slip! |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:47pm
JakeGould:
What’s the “Friedman Slip?” a hand written number you get from the guy at the counter at the deli? |
![]() |
![]() hahahah! |
![]() |
![]() this pussycats record is sublime. |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:49pm
statoj:
I like the way she says "bay-bee." |
![]() |
![]() ![]() I wonder if this is before or after Josie was their leader. |
![]() |
![]() apropos of nothin, but i've been listening to fmu for 30 years now & i've never heard 'poor side of town' by johnny rivers. |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:52pm
JakeGould:
Now I want to sail into Walker’s Cay. Do they serve savory ice cream? |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:53pm
statoj:
Linda Lee, would that be a request? Great song. |
![]() |
![]() i'd be totally thrilled. i've loved that damn record since it was new :-D |
![]() |
![]() @Linda Lee I don't know that record. Must check it out. |

Fri. 7/29/16 3:55pm

Fri. 7/29/16 3:55pm

I have only been a devotee for 1 year (better late than never) but I would love to hear Maria Muldaur (nee D'Amato) sing 'Cause I'm a Woman...W-O-M-A-N. |
![]() |
![]() @JtotheK Congrats on picking up that FAB Neil Sedaka 45 for so cheap! |
![]() |
![]() @Cecile @Linda Lee Sounds right up my alley! |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:56pm
Cecile:

Fri. 7/29/16 3:57pm
βrian:
Today, the playlist background is 'chilled buttermilk borscht.' Made with the freshest of beets, it's quite tasty. |
![]() |
![]() Johnny Rivers did 'Secret Agent Man' originally. 'Poor Side' concerns a woman shamed. |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 3:58pm
Cecile:
it's melodramatic, and Johnny is a great singer |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 4:00pm
Cecile:
yeah, someone's sailing into her cay. OH NO! |

![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 4:02pm

she has actually sung cabaret for a long time. I think the title is there because she didn't get good reviews for the movie At Long Last Love. |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 4:02pm
JakeGould:
Hey! I actually like that “Cybill Getz Better” title! |

Fri. 7/29/16 4:03pm
famous original italianicewolf:
I want to say I bought it at Footlights RIP
![]() |
![]() ![]() yeah, that Sedaka 45 is great! glad to have found it. (speaking of pop 45s...) now i need to find Paul Anka "I Can't Help Loving You" on RCA -- have had it (and that Sedaka) before, but realize both should be filed permanently... |
![]() |
Fri. 7/29/16 4:04pm
JakeGould:
@ItalianIceWolf: First, nice nick today! Also, yeah… Footlights… I miss them too. |
![]() |
![]() ![]() and also on the 'pop' discussion - there's a book about northern soul records, and they are broken down into a few sub-categories, one of which is 'pop' - and i enjoy trying to track the 'pop' northern 45s down... good stuff! (another good one is Trade Martin 'Work Song' on RCA) |

@Linda Lee: Coulda been depression meds...? @statoj: Maybe it was Grace's good faith recollection?

Dean, Dick Calvert never needed no stinkin' drugs. He was just a bright, intelligent soul with a gift for irony. Randy Newman immortalized him in his song, Rednecks. (Albeit in the voice of the redneck.) |

![]() @Ken From Hyde Park + @Michael 98145 I'm very flattered. Thank you both! |

![]() ![]() thank YOU |

![]() maybe so Dean. there was a lot of cross-over. if the meds made you happy, that was a **good** thing. |

Dean, No, Grace was "pulling his chain." for sure. |

![]() ![]() @matsutarou. For me one of the best Japanese songs by a Japanese girl singer is Banana boat by Michiko Hamamura (1957) |

Dean:
I was joking about Grace, truly. Re: Cavett, it appears he didn't start taking medication until after his first long-run show, i.e., 1975. http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20113244,00.html Fortunately, though, Cavett isn't a "was," he's still an "is." Still gifted, I assume, too. He likes to brag about his uncanny ability to generate anagrams on command.

@Rob Kopp: I must respectfully and vehemently disagree. https://youtu.be/XRDYL9ZcnyI should be the Japanese National Anthem.

![]() ![]() This eases my mixed feelings about hearing that Bob, Luis and Gordon were laid off from Sesame Street this week. |
![]() |
![]() what's interesting at this point is the idea that a witty, intelligent, astute person couldn't have possibly gotten high because, you know, drugs are bad. :-D we're talking the 60s & early 70s yes? |
Fri. 7/29/16 5:50pm
Dean:
Okay, one last riff on Cavett. A couple weeks ago I watched this interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdIIkcYSqzA ...from this year, maybe? Quite enjoyable.

matsutarou:
As an early 70s baby, I was too young to remember Dick Cavett or Andy Williams, and can only vaguely recall Flip Wilson and Merv Griffin shows. These days, I mix Andy Williams xmas album against Merzbow every yuletide. Backwards, forwards, filtered, chopped, etc..

P-90:
Back in the Golden Age of late-night talk shows, Cavett was always the "thinking persons" host. His shows with long interviews with John Lennon and Yoko are highly recommended. Also his Groucho Marx and Kate Hepburn Shows

Linda Lee, Well Cavett's affect was not that of a stoner. His timing was precise. I suppose it is possible he indulged, but his detachment was not suggestive of the door culture. But I suppose it is possibke. Pot was groovy, no argument. |

![]() St. Trinian's was based on a Ronald Searle cartoon strip from the 1940s, later made in to a series of movies in the '50s! It's a critical touchstone of British pop culture. |

Hi SB, I'm listening yours in Manchester here (routed from Cologne, Paris & London). Glad to hear you'd do another despondent women song show. Arriving JFK at your showtime. Hope I'll make it. See you!
