Artist Track Album Year Comments Approx. start time
Music behind DJ:
Bodega Pop
Intro   Options Bodega Pop Live  2016
DJ Shadow  Best Foot Forward [Alternate Version]   Options Endtroducing... (Deluxe Ed) Excessive Ephemera [Disc 2]  2005  USA | Endtroducing... of course came out in 1996, the first full year that Other Music was opened. (They opened Dec 1995.) I found this terrific "deluxe edition" used there, somewhat recently  0:04:30 ()
The Raincoats  Balloonacy   Options The Kitchen Tapes  1998  United Kingdom | I think this is the first thing I ever bought at Other Music, but I'm not entirely sure. I moved to NYC in summer of 1997, so it's possible I didn't get to Other Music for 6 months to a year ...  0:06:03 ()
Joey Boy  ยกมือขึ้น (Demo) [Put Up Your Hands]   Options Sorry I'm Happy  2004  Thailand | Bought this and two other Thai hip-hop CDs maybe two weeks before Other closed, in the "used" section, although they still had shrinkwrap on them  0:10:03 ()
Tsehaytu Beraki  Sport Malet   Options Selam [Disc 1]  2004  Ethiopia | Bought this one used  0:13:33 ()
The Group  Kumâlo   Options The Feed-Back  2014  Italy | Originally released 1970 | Walter Branchi, Bruno Battisti D’Amario, Mario Bertoncini, John Heineman, Ennio Morricone  0:19:18 ()
Maryam  Wahdi (وحدي)   Options Mesh Baghanny  212  Egypt | This is one of the most beautiful CDs I've ever bought -- I mean the cover and insides, though the music is wonderful too -- imported from Egypt  0:33:35 ()
Franck Vigroux + Matthew Bourne  Radio Stars   Options Radioland: Radio-Activity Revisited  2015  France | This album is insanely great -- I bought it originally to play on the Krafterwerk show I did, but did I? No, I did not. These are not cover versions so much as homages to the tracks ... super-love for this album  0:39:42 ()
Alice Bag  Modern Day Virgin Sacrifice   Options Alice Bag  2016  USA | This CD, Bag's first solo album ever (!?), I picked up on the day it was released, June 24, the day before Other Music closed. THEY GOT IT FOR THEIR STORE EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE CLOSING THE NEXT DAY. *tear drop*  0:45:39 ()
Les Rallizes Dénudés  Strung Out Deeper Than the Night   Options France Demo Tapes  2016  Japan | Bought on or near the day it came out, a week or two before Other Music closed  0:48:17 ()
Music behind DJ:
Bixio, Frizzi, Tempera
Godzilla   Options Magnetic System  2016  Italy | I guess this one is newish as well  0:54:26 ()
Träd Gräs Och Stenar  Last Time   Options DJungelns Lag/Mors Mors/Kom Tillsammans  1972  Sweden | Terrific 3-CD set picked up on OM's 2nd-to-last day open  1:06:39 ()
Jane Birkin  Encore Lui   Options Di Doo Dah  1973  France | Bought used. My policy is basically: If a French lady recorded it, and it is used, I will buy it.  1:15:10 ()

Mu  Hello Bored Biz Man   Options Afro Finger & Gel  2003  UK | Used bin, $1  1:23:28 ()
Shalabi Effect  Skin Job   Options Unfortunately  2005  Canada | Bought used. I ran into Kurt Gottschalk, who also stopped in at OM on the way to one of WFMU's readings at the Red Room. He recommended I get this and another Shalabi Effect album.  1:29:44 ()
Elia y Elizabeth  Pesadilla   Options La Onda de Elia y Elizabeth  2014  Colombia  1:34:19 ()
Pax Nicholas and the Nettey Family  Na Teef Know De Road of Teef   Options Na Teef Know De Road of Teef  2009  Nigeria | Original 1975  1:37:05 ()

Hey, Gary and all! Sad occasion for the show, but I know this will be an amazing 3 hours.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 6:58pm Gary:

Hey there, James! Well, I can't admit to being an especially adventurous shopper there, but I did pick some gems up over the year
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 7:00pm melinda:

hi Gary & James & friends yet to arrive
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 7:01pm steve:

hey Gary!

Welcome, Melinda and Steve!

Was reading a paperback printed in 1971 over dinner and am now discovering my hands have that wonderful old-book smell on them.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 7:07pm ndbob:

What book James?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/29/16 7:08pm listener james from westwood:

"Honor Thy Father," Gay Talese. Nabbed it in the used section of my local B&N.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 7:11pm ndbob:

I've forced myself to cut down on book buying a little - have at least 50 I haven't read
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 7:11pm Gary:

Do fingers pick up the old book smell? I actually never noticed that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 7:12pm melinda:

I like this Raincoats.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 7:15pm ndbob:

Kind of Gary
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 7:15pm Gary:

I love that whole Raincoats album, Melinda -- so wonderful. Speaking of wonderful, I can't even tell you how insanely thrilled I was to find this Joey Boy CD there a couple of weeks ago.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 7:17pm ndbob:

Joey Boy is good - not much of a hip-hop fan - I like the international stuff better though
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/29/16 7:17pm listener james from westwood:

I hear ya ndbob. My to-be-read pile is a foot deep but I couldn't resist a huge chunk of New Journalism for only $3—same price as 45ish years ago!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 7:17pm steve:

OM is my fav record store of all time, and I'm not just saying that. I would posit that Other Music may have had THE BEST used section in all of record store in history...
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 7:19pm Gary:

They had an amazing used section, definitely -- and lots more imports (from places like Thailand!) than other stores
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 7:21pm ndbob:

@James I'm afraid to walk into bookstores sometimes - record shows even more so
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/29/16 7:25pm listener james from westwood:

Hell, the town library just started a summer program where they drop a ticket in a jar for you for each book you take out, with a drawing for a basket of cheer near Labor Day. How am I supposed to get any work done with that sort of borrowing impetus?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 7:25pm melinda:

Gary is Kitchen Tapes the album w/the cover of Lola? Don't know a ton of Raincoats songs but I liked that one too.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 7:27pm Gary:

No, I'm not sure what album that's from -- I have an MP3, but I think I got it from Mr. Fab's blog
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 7:30pm Gary:

@Melinda, it looks like Lola is from their first album, The Raincoats, from 1979
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 7:38pm melinda:

Thanks Gary.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 7:53pm steve:

where on earth do they keep finding these undiscovered LRD demos and bootlegs
Avatar    Wed. 6/29/16 7:53pm hyde:

@Steve there *are* seemingly endless numbers of them
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 7:55pm Gary:

The liner notes for this one say that this selection was floating around for a while in bootleg fashion. This has apparently been remastered. This is the shortest track on it, and they're all amazing, but holy bejeebus, there's a 20+ minute track that is ultra mind-blowing
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 7:56pm steve:

I had a bunch... donated em all to the station a few years ago. The one troubling thing is I'm pretty sure most are CDrs and so won't live forever.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 7:59pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Gary! catch the rest later
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/29/16 8:03pm northguineahills:

I think that's called album oriented rock?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/29/16 8:04pm northguineahills:

Bryce plays full cds often enough on his show.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 8:10pm Gary:

Hi NGH! Ah, good to know -- maybe I will be less squeamish about it
Avatar    Wed. 6/29/16 8:11pm hyde:

Bryce had a six track, three hour show a month or two back. it was awesome.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 8:12pm Gary:

@Hyde -- he played 6 tracks off each album?
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 8:13pm Gary:

I guess I always felt that, because Tony doesn't archive Tape Hiss out of respect to the artists that maybe it was sort of a thing
Avatar    Wed. 6/29/16 8:14pm hyde:

no, his entire show was comprised of just six tracks (not les rallizes denudes tracks, other stuff)
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 8:15pm Gary:

Avatar    Wed. 6/29/16 8:16pm hyde:

i like everything i've heard from this Träd Gräs Och Stenar thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/29/16 8:18pm northguineahills:

I've seen Bryce do a 3 track three hour show before. He did do the station ID during each track.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 8:19pm Gary:

It's another beautifully packaged thing, with a booklet that I haven't yet had a chance to read, but look forward to
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/29/16 8:19pm listener james from westwood:

Sound policy on the Birkin entry.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 8:20pm Gary:

@LJfW: It is a policy that has served me well!
Avatar    Wed. 6/29/16 8:20pm hyde:

@ngh oh man, i must've missed that one. that sounds great. i love his show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/29/16 8:28pm northguineahills:

I've dared Kurt to do the same, and he came close. I once had a three hour slot on Free109point.org, and played Philip Glass's Einstein on the Beach. I went over, as I was the last dj that evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/29/16 8:36pm northguineahills:

It's better to be in the Red Room then Red Rum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 8:45pm Ike:

Sounding very fine there.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 8:45pm Gary:

Mr. Ike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 9:00pm melinda:

Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 9:17pm Gary:

Ohhh, looking forward to it, Jeff!
  Wed. 6/29/16 9:22pm Jeff g.:

Catching up on comments...did y'all reals that CRAY-ZEE Gay Talese story on the NYer a few weeks back? About the hotel voyeur? Bonkers.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 9:23pm Gary:

YES, I read that -- totally mind-blowing
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 9:25pm melinda:

Nice electro.
  Wed. 6/29/16 9:26pm Jeff g.:

I still feel unclean from it.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 9:26pm Gary:

Did this South African comp get much play when it came out? It's terrific
  Wed. 6/29/16 9:27pm Jeff g.:

Currently reading a history of DARPA, the secret US military/tech group. Making me feel dirty in a different way...
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 9:28pm Gary:

One thing I am looking forward to when I'm in London in a couple of weeks is going to Honest Jon's store ... that and the post-Brexit exchange rate
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 9:28pm Gary:

I don't know about DARPA ... what would you suggest I read in shorter form about them? (On the internet preferably)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 9:29pm melinda:

There was a podcast episode about that motel voyeur but I forget which one it was. Creepy.
  Wed. 6/29/16 9:32pm Leather:

Thought it was a built to spill song for a second
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 9:32pm Gary:

Howdy, Leather!
Avatar    Wed. 6/29/16 9:32pm hyde:

whoa, this is super cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/29/16 9:33pm Jeff Golick:

See if you can go to Cafe Oto, Gary. Bound to be something great on, and they have a fab store, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 9:33pm Ike:

I read that New Yorker article too. Spooky and unforgettable. Some of the letters to the editor in response were scathing regarding the ethics of the reporter, etc.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 9:33pm Gary:

Writing that in my notebook now, Jeff!
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 9:34pm Gary:

Oh, man -- I missed the letters that followed
  Wed. 6/29/16 9:36pm Leather:

I usually listen as I push carts in the target parking lot at night. Thai music especially tends to get me the oddest looks from customers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/29/16 9:37pm Jeff Golick:

Missed the letters, too, though for sure Talese is implicated in a way that is, at the very least, pretty icky.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 9:37pm Gary:

Causing glances askance since 2014
Avatar    Wed. 6/29/16 9:38pm hyde:

i hadn't heard about this Soul Jazz comp. it looks killer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/29/16 9:38pm Jeff Golick:

No good knowledge re DARPA articles, Gary. Sorry!
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 9:39pm Gary:

It's amazing, Hyde -- you can see it on the wall in the photo to the left ... right to the right of the guy to the furthest right's head
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 9:39pm Gary:

That's okay, Jeff; I'll Google after the show
Avatar    Wed. 6/29/16 9:40pm hyde:

yeah, i think i need this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 9:41pm Ike:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/29/16 9:46pm Ike:

Those letters to the editor don't come up in an initial search, but this does: www.huffingtonpost.com...
Hmm, I hadn't seen this article before. Interesting.
Avatar Wed. 6/29/16 9:49pm Gary:

Interesting ... thanks, Ike!
