@djsheilab: Ha! Funny/sad anecdote about the “One Flag” thing: While I’m American born my parents were immigrants. And when I went to summer camp I was treated like an “immigrant” because of that. Anyway, we had a field trip to the United Nations and everyone got flags from the gift shop. I got a United Nations flag and everyone else got a U.S. flag. And may I respectfully submit that maybe Brexit was NOT primarily about "nationalism" or "isolationism", or "xenophobic" immigration issues, rather a rejection of a failed experiment in"Globalization" that was economically disastrous and costing the citizens of member nations too much of their sovereignty and rights to democratic and economic self-determination. The EU: OK in theory, worth a try, but a failure for everyone except the big central banks. History may show that England is leading the way in an inevitable exodus of EU member nations. For reals.

  3:40pm
JakeGould:

@P-90: Blah, blah… This is not a good thing. History will prove that since it has historically been the case.

Economic disparity has more to do with the crazy fear of taking the rich if you ask me. And the U.K. leaving the E.U. doesn’t change the fact that Asia is the world’s “factory” nowadays thus disenfranchising the working class all over the world.
Avatar 3:40pm
The Contessa:

@P-90, let's hope you're right...
  3:40pm
Davey Croquet:

And with respect, P-90, that is absolute nonsense. Brexit was the most xenophobic and racist political campaign in British political history, by some distance. An MP was assassinated and the most hateful opinions I've eve heard in public life were voiced every day. I live in the North of England, trust me, this is a place of great divisions.
  3:41pm

@Cecile: As a first generation American let me explain the problem to you… People who are 3rd generation of a country or longer than that tend to be resentful for the “new” folks. Believe me when I say that the worst bullies I dealt with were other kids with similar economic backgrounds whose parents came to the U.S. decades earlier.

Racism and nationalism is hatred of the new and the disconnect from your own past.

@Davey C: The CAMPAIGNS run by some entities to raise support for Brexit were absolutely reprehensible for their racist, rabble-rousing tactics. But Britain getting free of the EU is a step in the right direction in the end, regardless of the ugliness of some of the debate about the vote. They're shitting bricks in Brussels already about possibly imminent similar moves by France and Spain, encouraged by Britain's departure. The EU is a ultimately a totalitarian movement, and most Europeans, in the end, are really uncomfortable with that sort of thing. Like, really suspicious and unwilling to submit, deep down.
