Fucking great set! Hey everybody,I feel your pain regarding loss of record stores,landmark historical buildings,diverse local bottom-up underground culture etc,. We lost Tower Records on Sunset Strip and now the Strip itself. Ugly big box "Dwell" style houses are replacing entire neighborhoods as if dropped from U.F.O.s overnight. It's a world wide phenomenon too;got friends in Europe,same there. |

Oh the DT of Al's Bar days was definitely MUCH rougher! @ Nate K: Yeah,L.A.,like N.Y., had it's own architecture and culture. There are still a lot of little "Spanish Colonial" buildings but reaching the tipping point in wrong direction. We had a film based culture and it was funny! You could walk down almost any street and see a Normandy Castle next to a Spanish Mission next to an English Tudor... It was all make believe and studio influenced,charming. @Dean:East of DT is the current hot spot and it's really great. |

That's a good way to put it, Cecile. I always thought LA could be nice, if you hung out at the right places, Al's Bar among them. But downtown was dreary and "edgy" at once. The east side was predominantly warehouses just south of Union Station. When Al's closed in 2002, I think, an artist neighborhood began to appear, and evidently it has flourished. Meanwhile, there is still a Skid Row closer to the center of downtown. | |

I remember a business trip to St. Louis a few years ago. I stayed downtown, which was rough and empty a la L.A., geezerette. There's L.A. and L.A. It's just huge. You could spend a long weekend exploring the downtown area, but you'd be miles from, say, Hollywood or other parts west or east. Took me forty years to get used to the place. Then I left. | |
