it's bad when people move to NYC to escape the rising costs of London and Tokyo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:12pm JakeGould:

Love this conversation. And yeah, HotTopic seems like a cheap way out/in but growing up in deep Brooklyn in the 1970s and 1980s, I used to get hassled just for the 1" inch buttons I wore on my denim jacket… And taking the subway to “the city” took 1 hour but it was worth it…
Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 1:12pm geezerette:

she's actually right about that, our conception of time is different now,and privacy.
  Thu. 4/28/16 1:13pm Dean:

Technology, technology, technology. It distracts us and it seeks an immediate response. It is completely okay to regret Luddite-like the way the "network effect" now demands our compliance. (He said on a web comment board.)
Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 1:14pm geezerette:

the problem is that our neurology is the same.

Avatar    Thu. 4/28/16 1:18pm V Priceless:

"was it a white whale?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:18pm Cecile:

Yeah, hardcore had its stupid moments. I'm glad I was a little older when it happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:18pm JakeGould:

Technology is great nowadays. I wish I had the tech we had now when I was a teen. So much easier to learn about cool things… But the downside is local scenes don’t form the way they used to. Nowadays people are compartmentalized into exactly what they like. So if you live in the middle of nowhere, the metal kids, punk kids, queer kids, hardcore kids and others have less and less reason to form a “Freak and Geek” group of their own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:20pm Cecile:

and parents are so afraid of older people being friends with younger people (thanks to creeps who have abused this) that it's almost like there's no different perspective or voice of reason in these scenes.
  Thu. 4/28/16 1:22pm Dean:

Not saying there isn't an upside to technology. I live in California and listen regularly to a "radio" station out of New Jersey! But there are costs we neglect to take into account. We pay dearly for convenience and access to "information."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:22pm Cliff:

Wow, I had no idea Moby started out in 80's hardcore...worlds colliding
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:22pm JakeGould:

I do almost think in some areas that are not 100% hick, but not 100% city scenes can form because of a need for local knowledge. Like deep parts of Brooklyn or parts of NJ that are close enough to the PATH to get to “the city” but still a pain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:23pm Cecile:

Lindsay is cutting out on my end
  Thu. 4/28/16 1:24pm Dean:

Believe me, there is value to not having photos. For example, I attended every Grateful Dead live show ever, and nobody has the pictures to prove otherwise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:24pm JakeGould:

That kind of “final mile” of knowledge can breed scenes. But saying tech is destroying things is regressive… Yeah, I have fond memories of the old ways of trying to be cool, but still… There will always be new things.
Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 1:24pm geezerette:

@Jake:it's a bigger problem than most people are willing to acknowledge. this is what net neutrality was about. there's been so much corporate media consolidation that tech interfaces are extremely mediated. there is a trojan horse aspect even though we all love tech it's important to maintain critical thinking skills.
Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 1:26pm geezerette:

...also,getting good at things takes time and focus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/28/16 1:27pm Cheri Pi:

I never remember dates, I only remember visual cues
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:28pm Cliff:

Heh, I always remember the weather and what the crowd was like, but the date or even what year it was? Nope
Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 1:28pm geezerette:

@Cheri:me too
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:29pm Cecile:

me too for the most part, Pi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:29pm JakeGould:

Eh, I’m not too worried. Forget about net neutrality; posting your own personal blog nowadays is impractical because of many different reasons… It’s almost at the point where coming up with some print zine/blog hybrid is worth it for some things. In the art world zine (printed) are making a comeback. People will always figure out ways to communicate in a way that works for them.
Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 1:32pm geezerette:

all I'm saying is that history is important and being aware of macro is as important as micro. my bias,I'll admit.
  Thu. 4/28/16 1:33pm Dean:

Lindsey is obviously sparking a lot of ideas here on the side board. I have a kinda trivial question: Did she know the Claw Hammer cover of Devo before Kowalskis decided to cover it, too?

@JakeGould: "People will always figure out ways to communicate in a way that works for them." Amen. I think of Harold Love's book about "Scribal Publication in Seventeenth-century England." Well into the second century of print technology there were pockets of publication of handwritten documents.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/28/16 1:42pm Cheri Pi:

this record meant everything to younger me
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:44pm JakeGould:

I’m picking up drawing again. I work in tech and played around with sketch apps. I hate them and only see them useful if I have no choice. I invested in a few sketch pads and even some speedball pens to get me to create again. Works better for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:45pm Cecile:

I tried a few sketch apps. I either have to use my laptop and a stylus or pen and paper. Too hard on those apps.

I used Flash for illustration which was fun because that's not really what it's for, but you get neuromuscular feedback using markers, pens, brushes etc. against the drag on paper. Great to do both, like knowing more than one language.

Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 1:56pm geezerette:

This is a great interview!!!

@jmignault: :) !!!!
  Thu. 4/28/16 1:57pm Dean:

I read Fanfare reviews cover to cover during the '90s. That's when my classical collection exploded, relatively speaking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:58pm Cecile:

I listened to rap, jazz and GBV in the 90s. I was saddened by much rock music.
Avatar    Thu. 4/28/16 1:58pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

The '90s barely existed. If it wasn't for AmRep releases & psytrance, I would have checked out entirely...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:59pm Cecile:

AmRep had some nice moments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 1:59pm Cecile:

And people like Chris Knox always were doing interesting things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/28/16 2:00pm Cheri Pi:

my 90s were a Digable Planets/Billy Childish void with a dash of Esquivel.
Avatar    Thu. 4/28/16 2:00pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Was in Tucson for the decade. Some AmRep tours came to town (cows, supernova, etc) ... and that first Cluster tour, natch..
Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 2:02pm Wild Neil:

PEACE all. I used to go to Blues Travelers gigs at Mondo Perso, Mondo Kane, Nightinggales and Wetlands for their first album release party (went until 4am)...This was the early 90's...
Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 2:03pm geezerette:

@Cheri Pi: sounds about right!
  Thu. 4/28/16 2:03pm jmignault:

@geezerette: although I guess a phone is a physical surface too, though you probably shouldn't use a paintbrush on it :)
  Thu. 4/28/16 2:03pm Dean:

Well, there were a handful of Zeke records, too.
Avatar    Thu. 4/28/16 2:04pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Neil: whoa, Wetlands... I hit that once, made the journey from DC to see Hawkwind there (89 or 90?). Quite a spot..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 2:04pm Cecile:

There is a club in my old hometown which is modern industrial and quite excellent. It is a contrast to the rec room style bars in the rest of town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 2:05pm JakeGould:

@WildNeil: Wow. Might have crossed paths. I had friends into that whole Blues Traveller/Spin Doctors world… Not my scene but I went out with them a few times. Remember seeing Joan Osbourne at Mondo Kane. Another planet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/28/16 2:05pm Cheri Pi:

I've tried to do that in Cincinnati, but its too polarized.
Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 2:05pm geezerette:

Damn straight! No entitlement to an opinion. You gotta work for it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 2:06pm JakeGould:

I saw Beat Happening and Nation of Ulysses (I think? Or an early Make*Up lineup) at Wetlands back in the day.
Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 2:06pm Wild Neil:

@REV-you are my new hero for seeing HAWKWIND at WETLANDS.
@Jake Gould-I dated John Popper's sister a couple times....and they played in our attic (or my friend's attic) in Syracuse one time....they were from Princeton.Yeah, spin doctors they were all roomates or something...

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 2:14pm JakeGould:

Before the Internet was really a thing in the 1990s, I remember watching local scene promoters in the midwest kill off house parties and such. The reality is if all tech were to disappear right now, human garbage would figure out some way to “troll” others in the non-tech world as well.
  Thu. 4/28/16 2:15pm Dean:

Er, since when have we lived in a non-tech world? [Not trolling, I swear.]

I would nominate Killing Joke's song "Eighties"...kinda forgotten...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 2:16pm JakeGould:

@Dean: If we went back thousands of years to a cave and someone in the cave figured out a nice way to do something with the twigs that were collected, some other asshole in the cave would come along and ruin it. Human nature. We’re animals in ways people sometimes don’t get.
Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 2:17pm Wild Neil:

@Diane-if you see Ken tell him I am sorry I tried his patience yesterday. Apparently I was tedious.
  Thu. 4/28/16 2:17pm Dean:

Clarification: When I ranted against "technology, technology, technology," I was hammering away at *digital* technology, Moore's Law, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, etc., but also assembly lines, Fordism, Taylorism...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 2:17pm JakeGould:

The wheel really ruined the world of schlepping.
  Thu. 4/28/16 2:18pm Dean:

@Cecile, X at Madame Wong's was pretty in your face dynamic. But we all got older. They say we are all aging at the same rate.

Yaah great interview, lots of what she said could have been my life too, except for being a musician and club owner.

Hi guys! Thanks to the most gracious host Diane for having me on. It was really fun and just always good to think about good music and the time and place in which it was created.
