Mac! I like the “Little Rascals” and I believe the “Broadway Melody” stuff comes from the short, “The Pinch Singer” from 1936. That film was about a singing contest and there is a clear mention of a bunch of top-hatted kids singing it in top hats (miscellaneous kids) on page 166 of the Leonard Maltin book on “The Little Rascals.”
