that's the second time i've heard a cover of sundown this morning on WFMU

Almost sounds like Liam Gallagher doing Gordon Lightfoot. This is a fantastic cover! Welcome back Mike!

And, like Gord's original, it counts as CanCon (because of music + lyrics), guaranteeing ample Beaver Bin plays!
  Sat. 4/16/16 11:10am davefromtoronto:

what the h***'s a beaver bin???
  Sat. 4/16/16 11:12am paul:

I live in FL. And I lived in Ohio. Ohio has worse drivers. But FL isn't far behind.

How was this song not a hit back in the day????!!!!
  Sat. 4/16/16 11:19am Marc Francis:

Hahahahahaaaa. Beaver bin plays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 4/16/16 11:20am Gaylord Fields:

@davefromtoronto: It was a way for CBC radio programmers to minimally comply with CanCon, by segregating all the MAPL-qualifying music:

www.gutenberg.us...

www.torontostandard.com...
  Sat. 4/16/16 11:22am Marc Francis:

It made sure a certain amount of Canadian made music was played on Canadian airwaves. I think it worked really well for a while but I am not so sure these days? Google time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 4/16/16 11:26am Gaylord Fields:

@Marc Francis: It worked for awhile, until the government started upping the required percentage of Canadian content. This frustrated programmers, especially those near the US border. So this resulted in the "Beaver Hour" (all CanCon, and usually at 4 am), played from the aforementioned bin.
Avatar Sat. 4/16/16 11:27am Listener Baby:

Gaylord always comes up with the BEST band names.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 4/16/16 11:29am Gaylord Fields:

@Baby: You'd be interested in a band called Beaver Bin, certainly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 4/16/16 11:30am dinatekno:

I moved to Naples, FL from Hoboken. I'd rather drive on the NJ Turnpike all day than have to make my 25 miles one way work commute to Estero. It's a demolition derby with all of the midwestern and Canadian snowbirds. Come on down during OFF season, it's not so bad.
  Sat. 4/16/16 11:31am davefromtoronto:

thanks gaylord.

i've suffered under CanCon up hear forever but had never heard the "beaver bin" term

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 4/16/16 11:32am Gaylord Fields:

@dinatekno: Good job in integrating both of today's themes: bad-driving in Florida and Canadians.
  Sat. 4/16/16 11:34am DG:

yeah, I think the song is "Every Morning" by Sugar Ray, before its lead singer became an entertainment reporter.
Avatar Sat. 4/16/16 11:34am Michael Shelley:

YES SUGAR RAY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 4/16/16 11:35am Gaylord Fields:

@davefromtoronto: My pleasure! The term was strictly radio industry jargon, and not something the public would have encountered.
  Sat. 4/16/16 11:36am davefromtoronto:

you sang it better than the dude in the band...
  Sat. 4/16/16 11:36am DG:

Didn't they have a Canadian content rule on TV as well? I thought that's how the Bob & Doug McKenzie bits on "SCTV" got started.
  Sat. 4/16/16 11:36am P-90:

That's a lot of ba-ba's

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 4/16/16 11:40am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

In terms of what Charts & gets overexposed forever on Radio, &tc. - Steve Miller is mercy...
  Sat. 4/16/16 11:41am Marc Francis:

Ahhhhh. Thanks Gaylord!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 4/16/16 11:41am Gaylord Fields:

@DG: Precisely! SCTV was told to add two minutes of Canadian content to the show, so it gave the gov't the most broad, preposterous Canuck stereotypes it could think of. And the rest is comedy history.
  Sat. 4/16/16 11:43am Marc Francis:

@Gaylord: I am loving this Saturday morning lesson!

this is better than the LR version
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 4/16/16 11:55am dinatekno:

@Gaylord - wow! That is excellent! We need that here for sure! We have crazy locals that speed, tailgate, get irate and at times, criminal in their actions. It's a real problem. It's like...you live in Florida, where the majority of drivers are old and tend to be cautious! What do you expect? Tempers go from 0-Violent in under 5 seconds.

  Sat. 4/16/16 12:24pm P-90:

If Elvis were still alive, he'd probably be making about two albums a year, including an annual Christmas record, which would have tons of cool guest stars, and maybe a diflferent hot producer every year. You'd go shopping at the mall at the holidays and Elvis's Christmas single/duet with Taylor Swift or whoever would be playing everywhere...
