Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

The way I see it is even if I can't spring for it just yet, owing in part to having ponied up at WFMU, I'll likely hear selections here. Ergo, I sorta already bought it.

"games People Play" came out in 1969.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 1:39pm hyde:

@Jeff yeah, i've heard this on Brian Turner's show. It's good. Singer has definitely listened to some Sandy Denny records
  Fri. 3/25/16 1:39pm Dean:

Not counting all those early Dead shows, I mean. I went to every Grateful Dead show, from the get-go. Really.
  Fri. 3/25/16 1:39pm Dean:

@VP: Alas, no. I gotta be picky, and David Murray and Peter Brotzmann are coming to town soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 1:40pm hyde:

@Dean whoa, nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 1:41pm Jeff Golick:

Yeah that would qualify for an FMU hit, @UM. I sigh a little when I see that many many spins have happened on a song I'm thinking of playing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 1:42pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I like this Reindeer Ride thing too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 1:42pm Jeff Golick:

(Doesn't happen much, though.)
  Fri. 3/25/16 1:42pm Dean:

Brotzmann will be in SF at a tiny venue. Murray is playing at a wine tasting room in Vallejo(!), a club in Oakland, and at Phil Gelb's, solo, which includes a wonderful vegan dinner prepared by Gelb. I heard Murray at Phil's a few years back. After the show, the attendees dine with the performer! Pricey, but worth it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 1:47pm Uncle Michael:

Yes in the round was the first cancelled event in the arena in KC after the roof collapsed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

Murray played Terrapin Crossroads? Of course he did. I'd like tio check that place out next time I'm out there.
  Fri. 3/25/16 1:51pm Dean:

Did not know that. I'd never heard of the Vallejo place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

Did Phil have a place before the place he has now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 1:53pm doctorjazz:

Haven't seem David Murray in a while, but he always did a great show, worth checking out. I think for Brontzman one needs a bullet proof vest...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 1:55pm Lewis:

Man this album is such a mind blower!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 1:58pm Uncle Michael:

This and the opening to the Masterpiece album juts kill me.
  Fri. 3/25/16 2:00pm SeanG:

I can't stand myself either!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:01pm Lewis:

Indeed! (I have tracked down Masterpiece on your advice)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:01pm Uncle Michael:

Sean!

Good going, Lewis!
Avatar Fri. 3/25/16 2:04pm burke:

Awesome drums on this track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:05pm Jeff Golick:

NO NEW YORK - at the time I got it, one of the most expensive CDs I'd yet bought.
Avatar Fri. 3/25/16 2:06pm ndbob:

I got No New York when it came out - I will admit I had lots of trouble listening to it - particularly James Chance
  Fri. 3/25/16 2:08pm Dean:

Don't know about Phil Lesh venues, really (except for the ones where the Dead played, which I of course attended).

Yep, bought NNY when it was released as an LP. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Still love it.

I've heard Brotzmann live a number of times. The only show requiring protective gear was the Full Blast Trio. Apt name.
Avatar Fri. 3/25/16 2:09pm chromaphone:

I spent much of the morning listening to a 1983 Van Halen concert on youtube. Really did it for me. Now I finally get to listen to the Hink Dink. I'm doing good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:10pm Jeff Golick:

NNY = Eno, out in front, yet again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:10pm Alex In Illinois:

My pal and I first discovered James White and the Blacks when we went dumpster diving in the dumpster behind a building having an office of Warner Electra Asylum. We found 12 inch singles of Contort Yourself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:10pm doctorjazz:

Think I still have No Now York on vinyl...I took to James Chance for some reason, liked the album then (haven't put it on in many years).
Have to check out Brotzman one of these days, just know what I've heard from some recordings...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:11pm Uncle Michael:

burke!
chromaphone!
Alex!
  Fri. 3/25/16 2:11pm Dean:

Indeed, NNY=Eno, one of the exceptions in my book to an otherwise general disfavoring of his work, the other being "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts." Been down this road before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:12pm Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: You've sparked an idea...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:13pm doctorjazz:

Nu...
  Fri. 3/25/16 2:14pm Dean:

Horn rock! Again, porn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:14pm Jeff Golick:

@Alex: good on you for recognizing what you'd found!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:15pm doctorjazz:

@Jeff Golick, something to be done on Sunday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

This is one of those bands I'd never heard of until recent times and then fell head over heels with.
  Fri. 3/25/16 2:17pm Dean:

Lemme guess. Jeff G. is planning a mash-up of Chance and Brotzmann. Heck, throw some Blurt in the mix, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:18pm Mike East:

whoa, hey there, what'd I miss?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:19pm Uncle Michael:

I wrote it all down for you, Mike!
Avatar Fri. 3/25/16 2:20pm Dominick:

This is too good
Avatar    Fri. 3/25/16 2:21pm KevinfromBayRidge:

I'z back! One beer lunch. Just in time for guilt-free Peter.
  Fri. 3/25/16 2:22pm Dean:

Frampton was one of the performers on the roster at a festival I attended with Yes headlining. Other acts were Gary Wright and Gentle Giant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:22pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I was just thinking about Function at the Junction the other day! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

I need a beer. And damn...they're right here....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:23pm Uncle Michael:

I'll bet the Dead were playing halfway around the world that day...just saying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:23pm Uncle Michael:

Lizzie! I heard you thinking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:24pm Mike East:

How convenient! Thanks UM. Youda best!
  Fri. 3/25/16 2:24pm Dean:

[Checking my file of 3x5 cards...] Nowhere so far the SST couldn't deliver me in time for both shows.
  Fri. 3/25/16 2:25pm Dean:

Not to change the subject or anything, but Happy Cesar Chavez Day!
  Fri. 3/25/16 2:26pm Dean:

Er, holiday. Actual day is next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:26pm Brian in UK:

Got an ice cold Peroni, Uncle. Coming over.
The Yes cover was a Byrds song, but I guess you said that.
  Fri. 3/25/16 2:26pm Dean:

To quote UM, "Yes."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:27pm Brian in UK:

That is yes to Yes? In an around Greg Lake.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:30pm hyde:

oooh, nice one. never heard this Sandy Denny. she's the greatest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:30pm doctorjazz:

Sandy Denny always welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:31pm Jeff Golick:

Sandy w Fairport nothing better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:32pm Brian in UK:

19CD set is a trifle, how can I put it. Zealous.

Always a little bittersweet. She could've done so much more.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:33pm hyde:

even my girlfriend (who hates 99% of female folk singers) likes Sandy Denny
  Fri. 3/25/16 2:33pm Dean:

Sounded like Phil Lesh there for a second as the song ended. I second Jeff G. Nothing better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:33pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:35pm Brian in UK:

Now Kathleen Ferrier sings this one like no other. Showing my age.
Avatar Fri. 3/25/16 2:35pm burke:

@UM: Yeah! The bit about "a knight in some old-fashioned book." Can't remember where I heard that.
Avatar Fri. 3/25/16 2:35pm chromaphone:

I saw If on a Beat Club video on youtube a few months ago and was really into it. Thanks so much for reminding me to check more of them out UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:35pm Uncle Michael:

I was joking about Peroni yesterday...as in who goes to Italy for the *beer*?"
Avatar Fri. 3/25/16 2:35pm Doug Schulkind:

@KevinfromBayRidge
No, the Peroni had me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:36pm Uncle Michael:

Oooh! Never thought to look for If on Youtube!
  Fri. 3/25/16 2:36pm Dean:

Kathleen Ferrier's take on folk songs, also nothing better!
Avatar Fri. 3/25/16 2:36pm Lane Gray:

I just realized there was something missing from this week's show
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:37pm Brian in UK:

Scoffing gorgonzola too.

You missed the intro with the shoe reference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:37pm Mike East:

I'm a fan of Peroni...mostly the cheap price. Though I don't think I can even afford that today...I think I'll be living the high life tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:37pm Parq:

Is there a name for stuff like this Spanky, and the Free Design stuff et al? I've seen it called twee rock, but I don't care for that at all.

I always liked Spanky's voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/25/16 2:39pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:44pm Jeff Golick:

I would not have made a great producer. I was cool with the first take.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:44pm Parq:

Brian, check. Really, we should forget about names and just dig it. I'm always conflicted between my enthusiasm for taxonomy and my distaste for pigeonholing.

I could have sworn i was walking in space for a few seconds

Two types of people: those who taxonomize and those who don't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:47pm joe:

I missed some of the middle of the show. I see Heron Oblivion got played. They are going to be playing at Monty Hall in May

Have a cool Easter everyone.
THANK YOU, UNCLE.

On the James White discovery, when we first played the Contort Yourself record we had found in the dumpster, we had no idea what it was. It was a long mix with an atonal sax solo. We had get others to hear it because no one would believe our description of it.

The synth solo is the only thing wrong with this record.
Avatar Fri. 3/25/16 2:55pm Doug Schulkind:

It's a lie to quell a synth.
  Fri. 3/25/16 2:56pm Dean:

Here in Northern California we get our tamales from a little shack on International Blvd. in Oakland, Massachusetts Estupido.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/25/16 2:56pm Alex In Illinois:

Back in St, Louis, we would say "Catty-Corner", but here in Chicago, they say either "Kitty-corner" or "Kiddie-corner". Where is "Catercorner" from?
Avatar Fri. 3/25/16 2:56pm Lane Gray:

I just now got to Millie. I love soul covers of country and vice versa

Thanks, @UM! Good weekend to ya...and alla ya.

Seriously, the best Mexican we found up here was in downtown Oakland, Juanita's. The owner, who used to tell off-color jokes to his patrons, moved back to Mexico.
