Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 5:37pm glenn:

  Sun. 2/7/16 5:48pm Dean:

Dan Hicks, RIP. Obit by Irene Trudel's hubby in NYT.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 5:49pm Gaylord Fields:

@dale: I also played former Giants head coach Bill Pursell.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 5:49pm redkayak:

....what a lousy month it'e been for losing musicians. Now Dan Hicks is gone too :/
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 5:49pm redkayak:

@dean you read my mind....
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 5:51pm Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: Hi!!!
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 5:52pm dale:

hee hee - good one.
  Sun. 2/7/16 5:52pm Dean:

@redkayak: It helps me save the cost of a subscription to the NYT!

Missed the J Dilla earlier. There is an interview on the Amoeba Records site with Flea and Amy-Jo Albany in which Flea chokes up as he describes how much he loves J Dilla's records. Kinda sweet.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 5:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

1968 - Earth Monkey.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 5:55pm geezerette:

@ Dean :
Dan Hicks? Really? This has got to stop !!!
And what about The Lickettes?
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 5:56pm Gaylord Fields:

@Dean: I'm still quite upset that Dilla isn't around to make new beats or to know how loved he is.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 5:58pm redkayak:

Dan Hicks was awesome. Wish that I would have seen him in concert....
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 5:59pm glenn:

oh oh. did elvis die?
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:02pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@glenn - Reports vary.
  Sun. 2/7/16 6:03pm Dean:

Elvis? Never sure...

It's weird, but Hicks, J Dilla, and even Bowie were never on my playlists, yet their departures are palpable. That says something about my taste, of course, but I feel like it also says something about our musical culture, its richness and variety and wealth of very special talent.
  Sun. 2/7/16 6:03pm Are Bee:

I don't comment much but I want to say that Gaylord always delivers an A++ show and I listen because I know he will never just phone it in. Where else do you get Gabor Szabo and Elvis Presley on the same show? Keep up the amazing work.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:06pm Gaylord Fields:

@Are Bee: Your kind words mean a lot to me. Thank you.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:08pm Adrian in London:

That Elvis track was lovely. Never heard it before.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:10pm Gaylord Fields:

@Adrian in London: It was first released on his Pot Luck LP in 1962, amid all his soundtrack dreck, but not of it. And yes, it is a favorite Elvis track.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I would always have said I was a Bowie fan, but *still* surprised how impactful (if you'll forgive the neologism) his departure has been - both generally & personally.
...& Jefferson Airplane was some of the earliest stuff I was ever exposed to.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:11pm Adrian in London:

@Gaylord Of course, I'd never heard his track Black Star until a couple of weeks ago, sadly.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:12pm Gaylord Fields:

For those of us of a certain age (or who like music from a certain era), the rate of deaths of artists who mean a lot to us will seem almost incessant.
  Sun. 2/7/16 6:12pm Dean:

Yup, demographics.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:13pm Gaylord Fields:

@Adrian in London: There's so much dross to sift through with EP, so there's no shame in that.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:15pm Adrian in London:

Your show's the first thing that's managed to dislodge Sylvan's We Don't Belong from my brain since Sheila played it on Friday. What a track! That and Clothilde's Saperlipopette have been my songs of choice for the weekend.
  Sun. 2/7/16 6:15pm sugarwolf:

Ugh work... Finally sneaking in dinner....
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:17pm Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: Don't wolf it down in a hurry. Take human bites!
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:18pm Gaylord Fields:

@Adrian in London: The song in my head all weekend had been "Bushes of Love," from Bad Lip Reading's Star Wars spoof video.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:18pm Monica:

such a lovely sea shanty-ish take on "valley of the dolls." love!! you did it again, gaylord!!
  Sun. 2/7/16 6:19pm Dean:

This puts me in mind of a really wonderful cornemuse and accordion recital: http://www.amazon.fr/Musiques-cornemuses-accord%C3%A9ons-C-Vesvre-S-Desaunay/dp/B0055KKLPO
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:19pm glenn:

wfmu show idea: the roundup. two hours on sunday night, playing the music of artists who have died that week.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bowie was a little younger than the British Invasion proper - a real bridge between them & Punk - w/ Glam & the ArtRock underground - yet hugely Popular. Ushered in a more Visual age. It's no wonder it's a big deal, really, but still surprised - something stealthy about he mattered...
  Sun. 2/7/16 6:20pm sugarwolf:

I hope Big Freedia is Beyoncé's special guest at the half time show.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:20pm Adrian in London:

And let's not forget Bowie's wallpaper he did for Laura Ashley…
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:22pm Gaylord Fields:

@Monica: Thanks, you lovely bird, you!
  Sun. 2/7/16 6:23pm Mr C:

Gaylord What record is this Nara on?
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Monica - Hi, nice mention in the papermag.com article. www.papermag.com...
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:24pm Adrian in London:

@Ken How'd the big move go?
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:24pm Gaylord Fields:

@Mr C: It's her self-titled one from 1968, produced by Rogerio Duprat.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:26pm Monica:

@ken from HP - thanks, kiddo!
  Sun. 2/7/16 6:29pm Dean:

@Rev: Did you see James Wolcott's tribute to Bowie?
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:31pm Bob in Oakland:

I just picked up Nino & April's All Strung Out LP yesterday at Amoeba in SF. The first three cuts on side one (You'll Be Needing Me Baby, Help You To See, and the title track) pack perhaps the most sublime 1-2-3 punch of the modern era.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:32pm Gaylord Fields:

@Bob in Oakland: I agree that it's a really good record! I'm glad you found it.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Dean: Clearly a worthy read, Cheers!

So - one metaphor is Gaylord as Film Director as DJ.
...The other 'image' evoked for me on FMU Sunday eves (over different Schedules) has been a neighborhood of cafes or clubs - stylin' hangouts, w/ each Program a different address...
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:39pm geezerette:

Yes,beautifully put.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(...losing Monica was like the end of the Weimar Republic...)
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:44pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Adrian - Ummm...hmmm. I'm afraid you have me at a loss. I don't recall mentioning any move.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:45pm Adrian in London:

@Ken You're right. Forget I said that. I'lm clearly going doolally. I'll go back and delete my original post. Oh.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:46pm steve:

i love this Ghost record! have it and hadn't even thought about it in forever. wonder whatever happened to them.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:47pm Monica:

@Rev Rab - my german's not so great but danke schön (i think).
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:48pm JakeGould:

Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...who said it 1st - Bonzos or Arthur Lee?...
  Sun. 2/7/16 6:54pm Ian:

Hey, who said We Are normal And Want Our First: the Bonzos or Love?
  Sun. 2/7/16 6:56pm Honeybear:

Lovely show tonight, Gaylord!
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:56pm Gaylord Fields:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: @Ian: Peter Weiss said it first, in Marat/Sade.
  Sun. 2/7/16 6:56pm Ian:

Sorry Rabbit. We posted at the same time.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

www.songfacts.com... :
The lyrics, "We are normal and we want our freedom" echo a line from a (then) new Peter Brook production of the play by Peter Weiss, The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade (normally shortened to Marat/Sade). In the play the line is shouted by the inmates at the lunatic asylum. The band saw the play at their art college and later used the line in this song. (thanks, Nancy - Isle Of Wight, United Kingdom)
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:56pm Monica:

another excellent show, Gaylord! on the puppy bowl!
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:56pm Gaylord Fields:

@Honeybear: Much obliged!
  Sun. 2/7/16 6:57pm Ian:

Thank you. A truly stellar show.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:57pm Gaylord Fields:

@Monica: I got action on the Puppy Bowl.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Love on 'Forever Changes' - late '67-8: 'We're all normal when we want our freedom.'
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:58pm Monica:

team fluff by 3.
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 6:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bonzos' Donuts - '69...
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 7:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Nov. '68...
Avatar Sun. 2/7/16 7:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Gaylord. May all your Super Bowl parties be grand!
