The Sharp Things live on WFMU

Live performance by The Sharp Things (L to R - Dylan Fusillo: drums; James Pertusi: bass; Michelle Caputo: guitar, vocals; Perry Serpa: vocals, keyboards; Jim Santo: guitar, vocals)

Reminiscent of the best 1970's era bands, The Sharp Things play pleasant chamber-pop floating on a cloud of tight harmonies and horn-filled orchestrations. Their new album "EverybodyEverybody" the fourth in a conceptual opus, part of a series of albums called The Dogs Of Bushwick, in tribute to The Kennel, a now defunct studio. Bandleader Perry Serpa describes it as "...a straight stream of music and sound from top to (almost) bottom." The Sharp Things played live on Irene's show.

Got it all cranked up live and loud. Really do enjoy this PH track.

I like the pic. Someone there on W 82nd decided to lively up the stoop, and on a smaller architectural scale sorta answered what the lightmeisters did with projection on Westminster Abbey in London recently. There ought to be a happy pairing of daytime chalk festival and nighttime light festival somewhere.

Late.

Hi Irene and everyone.

Listener Robert:

Reminds me of ~3 yrs. ago when a duet played a composition of theirs at a pagan retreat I attended, and I mentioned afterward how much it sounded like the theme from "World War 1", the CBS TV series from 50 yrs. ago. They said they never heard it. Afterward a friend of mine who was there asked, "Did you just call out the musicians? Because that would be a very heathen thing to do."

We're all drawing from the same pool.

Nice live set - let's have the Sharp Things play halftime at the super bowl. Or would the audience be offended by *real* music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Mike East:

I don't think it would offend them so much as bewilder them, herb.

Great set Irene. Nice to hear the Giant
  10:43pm
Listener Robert:

FYI, here's the piece (by Morton Gould) I was comparing that duet's piece to: www.youtube.com...

I don't know if that duet ever recorded, but to find their piece for comparison I'd have to recall their name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Irene Trudel:

Thanks Herb! Typos live large in my life. Hi Everybody! I've been busy with mixing the band, so no time to write back in teh comments. But I've been lurking.
  10:49pm
JakeGould:

To be honest, the “Schwarz” versus “Schwartz” thing can be debated for hours. But hey! Respect the spelling of whoever wants it spelled that way.
  10:49pm
Listener Robert:

The funny thing is that the Morton Gould "World War 1" sounds, deliberately I'm sure, like a dirge, while the duet's piece was light & lively. Show what you can do by changing tempo & some notes. Actually I don't mean to exaggerate the similarity, just the 1st bar and a half identical, then only slight similarity. But I still suspect maybe that old TV show stuck in the head of the folk-style composer if s/he was old enough.
  10:49pm
KP:

Good evening, Irene.

?:

This is nice listening...
  10:54pm
Listener Robert:

Meanwhile, the ACTUAL 1st world war was the 7 Years' War.

Why do I keep thinking about stuff that makes me cry? Not as often as when I was withdrawing from tramadol, though. THAT was a trip!
  10:57pm
Listener Robert:

Darn, now I'm thinking about GLEN Gould! But not crying.
  11:01pm
moontana:

You say "the old Fleetwood Mac" as in "Bare Trees" and I'm thinking that is the beginning of the decline, compared to "Then Play On" and "Kiln House" oh but, that said, it's a good show.
  11:02pm
JakeGould:

Don’t cry for me Argentina.

KP:

I like Greg Lake's voice, in moderation of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Irene Trudel:

Same here, KP. I was once obsessed with ELP, but that thankfully has passed.
Avatar 11:21pm
still b/p:

Among my main ELP recollections, cued inevitably and automatically if thinking about the band for even a few seconds, is listening to Tarkus and Pictures At An Exhibition cassettes on a portable player, probably with the mono earphone, on dad's boat, early 70s.

ha! i said "sweet" to this song but yes i must check out some of Hopkin's material. it's kind of weird that i never have, considering how huge that single was in my household as a child.
