I once spent a weekend hunting for the Sviatoslav Richter performance of Mussourgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," a live recording from Sofia, Bulgaria, famous for his playing and the audience's incessant coughing and wheezing. It was nowhere to be found in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. I returned home and dropped into my friend's local record store, where a pile of classical used LPs, just acquired, sat on the counter. At the bottom of the pile? No, not "Little Johnny Jewel." It was the Richter LP. Fifty cents.
