@Wild Neil: Do you know Rob's TransPacific Paradise - International Music show here 6-9 Eastern Sat.s?: wfmu.org...
If not, ask him for some wailing middle-eastern sounding music (I love it too).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 1/7/16 3:25pm fred:

@Cecile: I never talked with Boulez, but I noticed he would say hello to everyone, and I saw him chat with people who were cleaning the floors. The current IRCAM director won't even acknowledge your existence unless you're at least middle management. Then again, an acclaimed musician who showed up unprepared to a rehearsal would get thrown out. Politely, I guess, but firmly
This has made for a weird couple of days at work
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 3:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@fred: Thx & Sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 3:29pm coelacanth:

Gary (bodega pop, drummer stream, wed eve) also plays much middle-eastern wailing.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 3:29pm Cecile:

@fred, my dad was like that, too. He had his office in the sub-basement at the school where he taught so he could be in the middle of things in the metallurgy lab, and the mining techs were some of his closest friends. People who are good at what they do, and are secure in themselves don't seem to see all those trappings that other people obsess about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 3:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bodega Pop: wfmu.org...
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 3:30pm Cecile:

yes, this is good Miles, in my book. Real relaxed and swinging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 3:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's like crappy local cover bands being all cocaine attitude - & Jazz Giants shaking your hand & saying 'Thx for coming'. Because that's actually true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 1/7/16 3:31pm fred:

@RevRab: No reason to be sorry, he was 90 and achieved a lot of what he set up to do.
  Thu. 1/7/16 3:33pm Dean:

Listened last night to Notations and the three sonatas. Damn, 90 or not, his loss is palpable.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 3:33pm Cecile:

yup, revrab.
But sometimes the greats aren't born gracious, they have to learn too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 3:33pm coelacanth:

my favorite Miles is the crazy out-there Miles; but i can't argue with that track.

3 decades Fabio? Yikes! Congrats!
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:04pm northguineahills:

Wow, that's cool mrdonutsu!

It reminds me that when I saw a performance w/ Luc Ferrari right before he died. He actually went to the exit of the venue, and talked to everyone as they left. I got to shake his hand and talk to him for a minute, great guy. Never got to see Boulez, unfortunately.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:04pm Cecile:

I don't think she needed a lot of pushing. From Wikipedia:
"At 19, Annette married jazz bassist Gary Peacock. At the beginning of the '60s she toured with Albert Ayler, studied Zen macrobiotics with Michio Kushi, and was a close associate of Timothy Leary at the psychedelic center in Millbrook.[1]"
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:05pm Cecile:

that is cool about Patti.

Congrats Fabio, you are one of my favorite DJ's of all time. I love you, have you told Clay?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 1/7/16 4:09pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Clay was trying to enter WFMU last night. I'll bet there's a net full of balloons that he's going to drop on Fabio's head later today.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:09pm Wild Neil:

@Revolution Rabbit-Thanks! I will try to check it out this weekend...
  Thu. 1/7/16 4:10pm Matt:

Goddang. These don't sound like my Paul Bley records either.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:13pm Cecile:

I like both Motorhead and Paul Bley, but how different are they? Motorhead played songs hundreds of times, and Bley said something like "if you play a song twice, it's one time too many".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 4:13pm Ike:

Watch out! I'm back to cause more trouble!

Oh no, wait. I love all of this stuff. Never mind.
  Thu. 1/7/16 4:13pm P-90:

No surprise Annette was "a close associate" of Dr. Leary's at Millbrook, he never could keep his hands off the young ladies...
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:13pm Cecile:

I left and came back 40 times. Just wanted you to know Ike. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 4:14pm Devin B.:

John Allen played a bunch of great Bley stuff too, including some of those songs with Annette Peacock: www.wfmu.org...
  Thu. 1/7/16 4:14pm P-90:

Cecille: you're the core WFMU demographic
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:14pm Cecile:

She actually said he didn't lay a hand on her. He just let her stay there for a while. He was a gentleman, and Annette wasn't into free love.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:15pm Cecile:

I think so, P-90
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:16pm Cecile:

commenter annie loved it.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:17pm Cecile:

I still like Ant-man.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:18pm Cecile:

Actually, "What We Do In The Shadows" is a great flick, and very hilarious.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:18pm Chris from DC:

Love Pulp Fiction, not fond of Reservoir Dogs at all.
  Thu. 1/7/16 4:18pm Polyus:

Fabio, you aren't the only person I have heard trash that movie. Maybe I will save my $.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:18pm V Priceless:

imo, best thing QT ever did was screenplay for "True Romance".
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:19pm Cecile:

Chris, I didn't even see Reservoir Dogs because I hated its source material "City On Fire" so much. I was furious at that movie.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:20pm Wild Neil:

I could not watch Pulp Fiction a second time on DVD. All the surprise was gone for me....
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:20pm northguineahills:

What We Do in the Shadows is hilarious and fun!
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:20pm V Priceless:

@ C - just caught that "Shadows" flick - very cool!
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:21pm Cecile:

It is! And it was filmed for next to nothing, the directors called in all their NZ Cinema chits, and even Peter Jackson donated time and help.
  Thu. 1/7/16 4:23pm P-90:

I still say "Jackie Brown" is the underrated Tarantino gem. And not the only one who feels that way. Check it out and see.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:23pm Cecile:

I love Pam Grier. I might have to watch it someday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 4:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So 'KillBill' is a waste of time, then?
  Thu. 1/7/16 4:24pm Sally:

Tarantino's movies are not like icebergs--there is not a lot underneath, beyond the visible, right?
  Thu. 1/7/16 4:25pm Sally:

This music is great!
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:26pm Cecile:

You know what was a good movie? That John Wick movie. Redeemed Keanu in my eyes.
  Thu. 1/7/16 4:26pm P-90:

Pam Grier isn't just the star, the whole movie was conceived and written for her, as a showcase for her particular presence and a tribute to the persona she developed in all those B- movies she starred in in the seventies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 4:27pm JtotheK:

@P-90 - agreed on Jackie Brown. That and Pulp Fiction are my favorite QT films. I enjoyed Hateful Eight.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:28pm Cecile:

I heard about that. I have a beautiful African-American Barbie, called "Tangerine Twist Barbie." she has long hair, a leopard hat, an orange suit, and seamed orange stocking. I call her "Pam Grier Barbie"
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:28pm Chris from DC:

I wanted to like Jackie Brown more. It's ok though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 4:28pm JtotheK:

Pam Grier was terrific in Jackie Brown, and Robert Forster was really good, too. I remember seeing it in the theater, and then not again until a few years later...on laserdisc. And it was far better than I remembered.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:29pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 4:29pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Happy 2016, Fab! Afternoon, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 4:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'PulpFiction' made me feel it meant something in a Medium is the Massage sense (@ that time). He of course says he Directs like someone making a mixtape comp. - just using bits of fave films...Also the thing of this ♈Aries communicating such joie de vivre - even if it's thru visceral Violence, which otherwise I'm not interested in experiencing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 4:29pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I liked the Zombies song earlier
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 4:30pm mrdonutsu:

Patti also named Lemmy in her long list of people we lost as part of Elegie.

And speaking of core WFMU demographic, Hova of "Greasy Kid Stuff" fame was sitting right in front of me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 1/7/16 4:31pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thinking of old movies, I have a bunch of VHS tapes with some kid movies and whatnot. Where's a good place to bring them for others' enjoyment or recycling? I don't went to just send them to the landfill.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:32pm Cecile:

Goodwill will take them. There are people who still look for tapes there. Also, if your public library has a VHS section, they may also appreciate them.
Avatar Thu. 1/7/16 4:32pm Wild Neil:

@Ken-Goodwill might take them.
  Thu. 1/7/16 4:35pm P-90:

Last thing about "Jackie Brown": the story is adapted from an Elmore Leonard novel, so it's a more disciplined and fully realized story than Tarantino's originals tend to be.
re: Kill Bill I and II: imo they're also among his best work, there are one or two really effective dramatic elements amongst all the pulpy martial-arts movie stuff, and there are truly first-rate performances by Uma Thurman, David Carradine, and others. Thurman collaborated on the story. Really worth trying if you haven't...
  Thu. 1/7/16 4:37pm Sally:

Apropos of the Lemmy reference earlier, I watched some great footage of Lemmy and Philthy Animal on Youtube this weekend and that Phil was so funny and sharp, and he and Lemmy had such great chemistry. I was sad to hear Phil had bad health for a while before he died...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 4:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Directors kinda need to be Megalomaniacal to realize their vision - but so often even truly great Directors so woefully simply lack a good Writer...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/7/16 4:37pm Mike East:

Jackie Brown's also got Michael Keaton playing the same role he plays in "Out of Sight" - also an Elmore Leonard novel.
  Thu. 1/7/16 4:37pm Ol' lokia:

Greendisk.com is a good clearinghouse for e-waste recycling but postage is out-of-pocket.

John Huston benefitted by being a writer before he was a director.
  Thu. 1/7/16 4:39pm Ol' lokia:

Oh I forgot to mention. QT is an idiot. Just sayin'.
