our next-door neighbor used to get gov't issue peanut butter. it came in an un-labeled can with some rust around the bottom. the lip was not well-designed so the can-opener wouldn't work on it. once it got opened, it was a very hard block of bland peanut substance with a significant layer of (probably rancid) oil on top.
...yummy.

Rich in Washington:

I caught the tail-end of the government cheese thing, when I first moved out on my own in the mid-80s, was going to school. Our landlord gave us a block and told us where to get more. It was the best cheap cheese I had ever had. Right after that, the gov't ceased the free cheese program due to cutbacks, I believe.

I'm not sure how it goes, but the government collects commodities for the disabled. You get weird meat in a can, but you can also sometimes get Jif peanut butter or Green Giant lo-salt veggies.
