Hey Fred, I do not recall where, precisely, you live, but if you're tuned in, drop me a line so I know you're OK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11am
Nate K:

Morning, Mauri!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14am
fred:

Good morning Nate and pyromaniacs
I live in the Paris suburbs. I was at a show that night, but one too small to be a target. I guess being a WFMU listener is good for safety: obscure music means small audiences
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16am
Nate K:

Hi Fred, so glad to hear it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27am
pacific standard simon:

Glad that you're OK, fred. Eagles Of Death Metal has been a WFMU band, however. Three Chord Monte, maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34am
Nate K:

I read that EODM they lost their merch guy in the tragedy. So sad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35am
fred:

Sure, Simon, but for the price of a ticket to such a show I can go to about 5 more interesting ones, with less expensive (yet better) beer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40am
fred:

@Nate: Sadly, that looks likely. I haven't been there in years, but the merch tables were right next to where the attackers are said to have come in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42am
pacific standard simon:

First Charlie Hebdo, now this. WTF in France?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49am
pacific standard simon:

Boy I love this Ducks Deluxe track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51am
pacific standard simon:

OK, you just made me look up Sean Tyla to make sure this wasn't a goddam death dedication.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53am
Nate K:

No death dedication, Simon. I recently scored the single, so I figured I spin it.
  6:54am
Jonathan Herweg:

Did you miss me and my ghost transition?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54am
fred:

@Simon: The most obvious is a sizable minority whose parents or grand-parents came from North Africa, and who face constant, blatant discrimination. They're also totally cut off from what whites call "their" countries. Add a Saudi-funded salafist recruitment effort that is winked at by the government, in order to sell weapons to Saudi Arabia. And that's only what I know first-hand
Avatar 6:58am
mauri:

lovin this blair alise and the bombshells!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59am
pacific standard simon:

@fred - "Whites"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01am
pacific standard simon:

@Nate K - The Wikipedia entry for Tyla was pretty interesting, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04am
fred:

@Simon: Recently, a French politician went out and claimed France belonged to the "white race". This is how toxic it is here, and it's not going to get better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07am
Nate K:

@Fred, that sounds too nuanced and complicated, I was told it was because "they hate our freedom," that's gotta be it (note: sarcasm).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08am
Nate K:

Hey Mauri, yup, she's a superstar. Plays all the instruments on the single, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10am
pacific standard simon:

@fred - Whenever I think it's getting intolerably crazy in the US, it's nice to learn that the rest of the world is trying to keep up with us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12am
pacific standard simon:

And then there was the response to the British Invasion, The Gyrls.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26am
DonJuanTijuana:

Morning Nate & gang. just wanna say Muchos Gracias for all the kind words & dedication last week..it really made my whole week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28am
Nate K:

Hey @DonJuan, I'm glad it helped.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35am
fred:

This set takes me back to my high-school years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36am
Nate K:

Ha! Nice, @Fred. I think the Volt jam is the only non-KBD-era track.

Will:

Nate, of all the fine freeform DJs on the air, you are the freeformingest! Fondly, Will J
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44am
Nate K:

Thanks, Will. I always hope it all hangs together.
Avatar 7:47am
Howard F:

Good Morning! Hey Nate, who else did this song? "A Certain Girl" I'm really digging it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49am
Nate K:

Hi @Howard, the original is by Ernie K-Doe. I know that Billy Childish covered it, and maybe the Downliner's Sect. Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las covered it for her solo album, as a b-side to the single.

Avatar 7:51am

Oh...okay! Warren Zevon! Thanks @David Shortell. Thanks @Nate!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52am
Nate K:

Yes, Warren Zevon, forgot about that.
Avatar 7:53am
Howard F:

Did Allen Toussaint write that song?
Avatar 7:58am
David Shortell:

I was listening to an "American Routes" repeat on NPR this morning that featured Allen Toussaint. I never knew he composed the "Dating Game" theme song!
Avatar 8:01am
Howard F:

@David, didn't realize that. What a loss, gonna have to check that out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07am
Nate K:

David, I never knew that either. Skills to pay the bills.
Avatar 8:08am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Good Morning~Tzag! Glad to check in w/ you Fred. Pierre is okay too.
Somehow, I never quite got schooled on Allen Toussaint's accomplishments. So many songs by so many I take for granted were his. There's a few writers like that - an exclusive category.
NateK on FMU brings the Live again! This is pure roots fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10am
DonJuanTijuana:

Hats off to you Nate! Anyone who can lasso such a great kick a$$ band to do an early AM set on a Sunday deserves mega kudos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12am
Nate K:

@Howard, he definitely wrote "A Certain Girl."
@Revo, thanks so much for the update on Pierre!

...sometimes think R'n'R was born in N'Orleans not Memphis...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38am
fred:

R'n'R might have been born in Memphis, but it first got drunk in NOLA, and the rest is history
Avatar 8:42am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

HaHa! It's not about a single place in the South of course, but N'Orleans is kind of the entry point for African influence via the Caribbean - w/ French & Spanish in the mix...
Avatar 8:46am
doncaballero:

Nate, sorry if I missed this: are you going to post the GLLAHTB set on the FMA?
  8:50am
SeanG:

It's weird--I love hearing all these alternate takes but sometimes it ruins the original for me.
Avatar 8:51am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...only if they're better!...Does FMU have the new 18-disc box?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am
Nate K:

Hey @Don the whole show will be archived on my page and the Lightnin' Lee set will be there and on the FMA.
Avatar 8:53am
