The name Haskell always makes me think of how, when Wexler directed Medium Cool, when he's shooting the fictional plot line in which Robert Forster's character is in the middle of the real 1968 Chicago Democratic convention protests and shit starts to get ugly in the protests, you hear an off-camera voice from his crew yell "Haskell, this is real!"

There are early recordings of Abdullah Ibrahim when he first came to NY and fell in with the loft scene, a bit more bombastic, but reminds me of the basic feel of the piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

Hooch. Just fun to say.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

@docjazz
Abdullah Ibrahim? Do you mean maybe Ahmed Abdullah?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

I play fast and loose with the time/space continuum, Uncle Michael.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:16am doctorjazz:

No, check out some of the Abdullah Ibrahim big band things (guessing these are way out of print, have the old vinyl), he broke in with the loft scene in NY before he started doing his thing with the quartet, then Ekaya. Those records have a freewheeling and "out" feel (with his usual beautiful melodies) that he never returned with (think it had to do with the company he was keeping at the time, the free jazzers of downtown).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

Oh you mean the stuff on Enja and suchlike?!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:19am doctorjazz:

Yup, Africa Space Program is a great example (at work, but did a quick google to remind myself). Wild, wolly (terrible sound quality), fun.

And that segue my friends, is what free-form is all about.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:26am Artie Haywire:

We recently saw Abdullah Ibrahim and Ekaya perform. They delivered an extended set with remarkable energy and diversity of material. Great players and camaraderie in that band. Highly recommended if you get the chance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

Nice, Artie Haywire! Great to know he is still delivering the joy.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:29am doctorjazz:

Absolutely-think Abdullah Ibrahim may be the jazz musician (if you want to call him that) that I've seen live more than any other. Even took my wife to see him on our first date at Sweet Basil's in Manhattan way back when. Haven't seen him in a bit, though, nice to hear he can still bring it to his shows.
  10:30am Matthew:

Love the recording on this Joe Maneri...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:31am doctorjazz:

Great set so far, btw! love the mix in the current set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome aboard, Matthew. Amazing to think that Joe Maneri couldn't get any label to release that amazing music back in 1963. It remained unheard until John Zorn's Avant label released it in '98.

Is there possibly a better dateline for that NYT Rudd article than: "KERHONKSON, N.Y." ?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

For years and years, I had only a crappy beat-up copy of this record. It was virtually unplayable on the air (but I played it anyway. How could I not?) And then my great hero HUGO IN BERGEN NORWAY sent me this pristine digital copy. I think I actually cried.

@Jeff Golick
Asked and answered.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:42am Alex In Illinois:

Damn! I was in a meeting when you played the Fate Marable number! Too bad it is so hard to find a lot of Fate Marable recordings. I guess he spent too much time performing on the riverboats.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:56am Artie Haywire:

@Marie: Maybe "animation". GIF is the file format, which supports animated frames. There are others that are technically superior, but the GIF format is so established, ubiquitous and universally accessible as to be difficult to dethrone and synonymous with this type of image.

Fairchild is such an unsual, off beat song. I love it...

@Parq
Almost every Thanksgiving, we pile into the car and have a feast in Vermont with a wonderful gal electrician. Not this year, however.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:44am listener james from westwood:

UM, I am always down for the rooty poot roundup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

Now playing: the one song of Allen Toussaint's that he claimed as his favorite in numerous interviews.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:44am listener james from westwood:

Especially all those rooty poots down on Tulane.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:46am Uncle Michael:

I'll wear they heads out, James.

Uncle Michael, are you a disc jockey?

Ohm Sweet Ohm
Avatar 11:46am jill:

Transition - one of Allen's favorite. Glad it made it to your playlist, Doug. I'm in heaven with this set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Rich in Washington:

I don't mean to disfigure you. You know how we talk.
  11:47am Mr C:

It has a little Bacharach component in composition..
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:47am Uncle Michael:

Rich...don't call me no Disc Jockey or whatever...you all know how you do...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:47am Brian in UK:

Just glad I saw Mr T last time he came to London. Him, a piano, some songs & stories. Priceless.

Thanks, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Rich in Washington:

but I feel assured you will wear our heads out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Here's a nice piece on this epic track: www.trunkworthy.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:48am Uncle Michael:

This has to be Allen's own piano on this.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:49am Parq:

There has never been a radio personality like Uncle Michael before -- and there'll never be another like him again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

And the whole arrangement, UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

Like this morning's breakfast, Uncle Michael wears his music passions on his sleeve.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:52am Uncle Michael:

I just found some blueberry muffin in my cummerbund and some Davie Allen on my sleeve.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:53am Brian in UK:

Uncle you is classy.

muffin cuffin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

Rhyming necessary with monetary. Pure Allen Toussaint.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:54am Uncle Michael:

I don't wipe my mouth on my sleeve. I tend to lose cuff links that way.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:56am Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the amazing show, Doug. I hope to see you all up in the bar car.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Rich in Washington:

I just this morning accidently dipped the entire cuff of my bathrobe into my loaded french press just prior to reaching for a spoon to stir it.
I am reminded of a certain scene in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:56am Parq:

Saw a lovely, understated, eclectic solo performance by Allen in the mid 80s. It didn't go over with some because it didn't sound like the Meters (see below), but I thought it was terrific.

First Katrina and now the death of Toussaint. Pity poor NOLA and the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Rich in Washington:

I once read the buttons on coat cuffs was an invention of Napoleon, because he got tired of seeing his soldiers wipe their runny noses on their coat sleeves.
  11:58am Mr C:

Unlike almost any other master producer/arrangers, Allen wrote the words too...

excellent show Doug!

Harry Shearer, he of The Simpsons, Spinal Tap, Credibility Gap, has been doing lots of great reportage on NOLA. His podcast is called Le Show.
11:59am Rob in N.O. (formerly SAV):

I was counting on a Toussaint set. Nicely done, Doug, especially the closers. Thank you.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:59am Alex In Illinois:

@Rich in Washington: I heard the same story, only instead of Napoleon, I heard it was Queen Victoria.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:59am listener james from westwood:

Always a joy, Doug, and thanks for the closing tribute!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Doug Schulkind:

And fed the cats in the alley behind the studo too, surely, Mr C.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Rich in Washington:

I wonder is either of them is correct. Maybe The Tsar?
