Love, love, love Motorhead, and yet this 12" is the only item of theirs I have.

Was Lemmy reading Saussure when they recorded "On Parole"?
Avatar 12:54pm
Cecile:

Here is my Philthy story:
Went to see Motorhead in '83 with Brian Robertson on guitar. They were all coked to the gills. It was nuts.
For the encore, Phil stumbled out rubbing his nose with the back of his hand. He sat there staring at the setlist. Then a roadie ran his finger down the playlist and pointed to the song he was supposed to be playing next, like he was showing a little kid. He still played great, though.
Avatar 12:55pm
Diane Kamikaze:

Hey All! What can I say? The worst news, but at least I am on the air... @Cecile, Phil didn't drum on the ON Parole version of Lost Johnny, which is all I've got here...

never got to see Phil. Had tix to see them open for Alice circa 1987 but they got busted at customs or some bullshit. Announcer came over the P.A. and said "Motorhead will not be playing tonight but we have a great new local band performing instead Tora Tora" My friend and I were gutted. We had even made a Motorhead banner out of a bed sheet. Took hours.

Unrelated to Phil, but hanging outside my office is a clipping from a music newspaper of a story with headline, "Lemmy feels effect of age," juxtaposed with the AARP card the org'n sends me to coax me to join.
Avatar 1:12pm
Cecile:

at WCBN I remember our music director at the time actually being surprised that he liked best of set from the mid 80s. He previewed the records for people, and said "yeah, here's a Motorhead best of, and weird enough, it was good!" Everyone laughed. I got my hands on it for the review, and he was surprised that I was that excited about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm

it seems like I discovered Motorhead at a time where it seemed like punk had - for me - lost all vitality. I had been more or less a snob about heavy metal up to a point, but Motorhead knocked me clean off the fence.

I remember buying the 12", the one I still have, during the punk heyday, 1977 or so. It might as well have been punk to me, but I knew the lineage, too: Hawkwind, Pink Fairies. Everything about the group was right, starting with the name.

For one thing - Trios are Kewl. Each must fill more space.
It sounds like he's keeping a pretty simple regular beat - but so do the pistons of the largest Harley Davidson or Assault Tank. He is *beautifully* regular - & everything is hit so hard - *everything* - each & every time. The pace is sometimes pretty fast - & the duration of the force staggering. The fills are precise - yet brutal; all the more effective for their economy...

All this Motorhead is making me think of a friend I used to know at U. Maryland back in the eighties, Randi Schaffer. She was a big Voivod fan too for that matter.
